Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals!  I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles.  Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!

Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.

The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.

A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak

This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.

  • Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
  • Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
  • Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
  • Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.

Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea

Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.

This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

  1. Made these last night with my 15 year old. AMAZING! We doubled it and changed it up just a hair to suit our tastes. We substituted one can French Onion soup for a broth, one packet of mushroom gravy for brown, chilli sauce for ketchup, and a can of mushroom stems and pieces minced for the fresh mushrooms as while we all like the flavor of mushrooms we do not like the texture. We also put cut potatoes on the bottom (was a little concerned about them cooking through, but did this first and gave them a head start while we did the rest and they were perfect!) to make it a one pot dish. Should have used carrots too, but next time! The only complaint was from the 17 yr old who said the steaks didn’t have much flavor as she doesn’t care for gravy. Can’t say I disagree, but I smother with gravy so I didn’t notice. Any suggestions to get a little more flavor into the meat? Definitely signing up for the newsletter!5 stars

    1. Great idea with the potatoes, thanks for sharing! You could certainly up the seasonings in the meat, I think any of the following would be great:

    2. additional salt & pepper
a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce
      additional onion powder/garlic powder
      Italian seasoning
    3. I have a great recipe for Herbed Pot Roast. It has green beans, onion, and carrots in it. When I tried adding cut up POTATOES in it, all the delicious herbed taste DISAPPEARED. Maybe the potatoes were the thieves of your flavor.

  2. I was wondering if I could use canned brown gravy instead of the packet. My daughter has a milk allergy and I haven’t found a packet mix that doesn’t contain milk but our local grocery store does have milk free canned.

Thanks and can’t wait to try this!

    1. I haven’t tried it but I do think it would work. You might like to reduce the broth a little bit because you’ll have extra liquid in the gravy. Let us know how it goes!

  3. Excellent salisbury, I also used beef broth instead of water for the gravy, Big difference, family loved it5 stars

  4. Big hit with hubby but I didn’t care for the tanginess of the gravy. I will make it again but leave ketchup and dijon mustard out of the gravy. I used venison in place of the hamburger. Lean and healthier.4 stars

  5. I made the Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak for dinner last night. It was so delicious! My family devoured it. I will definitely add this to my “make again” recipes. Thank you for the delicious recipes you share.

    1. Tried this one out and was super disappointed that when searing the patties they completely disintegrated. Definitely needs tweaking to get the classic Salisbury steak flavored.

      1. If you followed the recipe without changes, the only thing I can think of that would have your patties fall apart is the mixing. When making you really need to mash the meat mixture and squeeze it between your fingers a bunch. Like meatloaf. The more you do, the more tender the meat and the better it stays together. Make a nice ball and slap it around in your hand a bunch and start flattening it as you slap. If you see cracks/breaks in your patty before you sear it, it just may fall apart. As for traditional Salisbury steak taste, leave out the ketchup and dijon for a more down home taste vs. fancy taste.

  6. I WORK 10 HRS DAYS AND I’M WONDERING IF THE HAMBURGER PATTIES WILL FALL APART IF COOKED TOO LONG IN THE CROCK-POT?

    1. Hi Cathleen, I would let them defrost them first then sear them before adding to the slow cooker. It will add a lot of flavor to the dish and keep them from falling apart.

  7. Delicious! Very tender and tasty. Better yet, I don’t have to stand and watch over it. Served it over mashed potatoes-yum!5 stars

  8. I’ve looked for a swiss steak recipe that wouldn’t hurt the pocket, and this recipe fits the bill. Thank you for posting this.

    Sincerely,
    Michael Craddock

  9. Thank you, THANK YOU for the recipe and ESPECIALLY since there was a recipe for cauliflower “mashed potatoes” to match!! Thought I died & went to carb heaven ❤5 stars

  10. This recipe sounded like a great comfort food on a cold wintry night. It turned out perfectly, and tasted even better than I anticipated. Hubbie (jokingly?) asked if he could lick the plate. The gravy was rich, so flavorful and fabulous! Thanks Holy for another homerun recipe!!5 stars
