Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals!  I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles.  Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!

Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.

The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.

A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak

This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.

  • Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
  • Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
  • Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
  • Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.

Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea

Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.

This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

  1. Delicious! Doubled the onions, mushrooms and gravy ingredients (I’m such a southern girl, and gravy is my weakness.) but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. Heavenly! Hubby said it was one of the best meals he’s had in a long time. Will definitely make again. Thanks for sharing!5 stars

  2. Thank you for the recipe. Even thou I did change it a bit. I’m newly allergic to all dairy which makes things a bit troublesome to say the least. I deleted the gravy mix and added a can of beef consommés and added about a tsp of each thyme and marjoram and paprika. Along with several cloves of minced garlic. It was very tasty and the best thing of all… No reactions Thank you5 stars

    1. So happy you were to adapt this recipe for your dietary needs! Thank you for sharing how it turned out ❤️

  3. Delicious! It’s rare I find a recipe where I don’t think of something I would add/change next time. This one is spot on…no changes and so yummy as is. We served over rice with green beans. Perfect for a chilly day. Thank you!5 stars

  4. My family loves this recipe! Especially the men, lol. I have used this a lot. I always double the recipe and add several drops of Lazy Kettle Brand All Natural Liquid Smoke. This is the best smoke flavor! I get it from Amazon. I do use my SmartPot after browning the Pattie’s in a pan. I think it saves time. I pressure cook for 30 minutes. Thanks so much!5 stars

  5. Making this now, can’t wait for it to be done! Quick question,I doubled the entire recipe but the gravy mixture does not cover the Pattie’s is this normal?

    1. Hi Jackie, it shouldn’t cover the patties entirely when cooking but there should be enough to pour over the patties when serving.

    1. We recommend cooking for 5 hours on low but if you have a crockpot that switches to keep warm after 5 hours it may be okay to leave for that long. We would love to hear how it turns out for you, Kathy.

  6. Slow cooker Salisbury steak was absolutely the best tasting meal I’ve had in a long time. It was easy to make and delicious5 stars

  7. Excited to make this for my family. We are 10 people..would I be able to double the meat patties? And if so, should I do any other adjustments?
    Thank you, much appreciated!

    1. Hi Sarit, you can just double the meat patties but to ensure there is enough of the yummy gravy to pour on top I would double the entire recipe.

  8. I made this today for supper. The only change I made was I put onion soup mix in the patty mixture and used a entire onion instead of half. It was so delicious. My husband thinks it was the most delicious hamburger steaks he’s ever had, and probably the best thing he’s had in a while. That’s high praise. Trust me, you have got to cook this.5 stars

  9. This is my go-to recipe for Salisbury steak. Have been using it for at least a year. I’ve tried a different one for in the oven and on stove and it doesn’t compare to this one. I make no tweaks and just make as is and the family makes it disappear. ☺️5 stars

  10. One of our favorites! I am making it again and have a question. I would like to put more mushrooms as we always seem to eat them in one sitting and don’t have enough for leftovers. Is this okay and are there any changes I should make in the other ingredients? This is the third time I have attempted to leave a question on this site but it never shows up! Hopefully I will have better luck this time. Thanks!

    1. Hi Susan, you should be fine to add more mushrooms without any issue. You could add a little extra beef broth to thin out the sauce and make it go farther if you wanted.

  11. We love this recipe. I am making it again today and have a question. We love mushrooms and I would like to add more. Is this okay and should I make any adjustments to the other ingredients? Thanks.5 stars

  12. Great recipe! Question, I have run out of time and need to cook mine on high today. How long do you suggest slow cooking if I can’t do 5 hours on low?5 stars

    1. This should work fine on high for 2.5-3 hours. You’ll want to ensure your beef reaches 160°F.

    2. This is the first time I’ve ever commented on a recipe! I followed directions totally and it was fantastic! We loved it! Will keep this in my go-to file! Thanks!5 stars

  13. The Salisbury steak recipe is a keeper. Easy to follow recipe instructions, and my family was very impressed with the results. Tasty, filling, and no left overs ! This will be a staple meal in our family since everyone loves mushrooms and onions .. i was very happy with the end results. The gravy is nice and thick and the burgers seared up beautifully in my cast iron fry pan. I’m extremely pleased when my family is asking me when will I make this meal again. Winner !!5 stars

  14. This is the Best! Easy to prepare and is amazing in taste. My husband couldn’t stop talking about it. Said it was restaurant good and wouldn’t believe it was just hamburg lol. So do yourself a favour and make this! Your family will love you (even more)
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.5 stars

  15. DELICIOUS I just made it for the first time! It turned out amazing! I followed the recipe to the tee and it came out great! I love Spend With Pennies. I stumbled onto it a week ago and have already made 3 different recipes. This site has been a God sent to me, we are not going out to eat and it’s a nice change to find enjoyable ways to eat at home 5 stars

  16. This is a fantastic recipe. I have made this multiple times. I read some of the other previous reviews. I have never had a problem with the patties falling apart. I do always add a small amount of extra seasonings, to taste, in the meat patties. I double the mushrooms as we love them and I generally use minced dry onion (just a small amount) in the gravy and the patties. I use knorr brown gravy packet, that’s our fav.
As others I have asked I have made extra patties and frozen them before searing. Defrost in frig when needed. This is a huge time saver since the patties are the majority of your prep time. I have never found the patties or the gravy to be lacking in flavor.5 stars
