Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak is one of our favorite comfort foods. Tender beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy with mushrooms and onions. This crockpot salisbury steak is perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta!

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals! I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles. Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!
Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.
The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.
A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak
This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.
- Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
- Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
- Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
- Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.
Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea
Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.
This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

This is going to sound a little funny, but we show dogs and stay in hotels. To save $ I bring along my slow cooker. Could I sear the beef patties ahead of time and keep them in the cooler/refrigerator over night to prepare this recipe the next day? I would bring along either make-ahead mashed potatoes or pre-cooked buttered egg noodles and a salad mix.
While I haven’t tried that, it sounds like a perfect plan Patty! What a great idea!
Followed recipe to a T, not good at all. Gravy had no taste, onions still raw after 5 hours. Husband told me to never make it again.
So sorry to hear that Melissa, I am not sure what went wrong. We have always had great success with this recipe.
I always find if there is one negative review out of several raving reviews it may not be the recipe but how it was followed. Try it again to make sure you are not missing out!
I know I will be trying it real soon!!
I just made this tonight. Crock-pots differ in times, and I’m sure my runs odd b/c I have to adjust all my recipes al the time.. That said, I made a few changes and will continue to make more when I make it in the future. But as is, it was VERY good! B/c I started it later than I intended, I started it on high then I switched to low, but maybe I hit warn instead by mistake.
Here’s what I learned:
1. I browned the patties for 3 min ea. side, but my stove setting must have too hot, thge patties burned. However after cooking them in the crock, they didn’t look or taste burned. Next time I’ll brown 1 1/2 to 2 min ea. side. I should have tested first, but didn’t
2, We love mushroom and onions, so I used a whole Vidalia and 1 lb crimini. Frankly, I may add more next time…so good.
3. The gravy mix I used was not a brand name, so I added an organic bullion for a cup, and used Organic beef bone broth. When it came time to serve, my crock was taking forever to heat to high to thicken the gravy and everything else was ready. I used a Turkey baster to draw out what I thought we’d eat over the patty, and put in a glass measuring cup and microwaved if for 1/2 min or more. Perfect – AND SO GOOD. Like I said, we do not eat gravy usually so it was a treat.
3. There’s just the two of us, so I took the left overs, divided the patties and gravy into storage containers and stuck them in the freezer. I hope they will heat up and taste as good as this dinner tasted.
Holly – you have so many great comfort food recipes and updated them for today’s appliances. I am thrilled I found you. I’m looking forward to trying more of your recipes.
Thank you!
Sounds so great Pamela, thank you for sharing! I’m happy you found Spend With Pennies too! You’re so welcome!
So it’s ok to freeze the leftovers even if beef was previously frozen?
If the ground beef was thawed in the refrigerator it should be fine to refreeze Joanne.
Tasty
Many thanks Jacqueline!
Excellent recipes
thank you
You’re welcome Jean! So happy you enjoy them.
OH.MY.GOSH……this is so GOOD…..like lick your plate GOOD lol! My sis passed your recipe along to me after I had it for dinner one night at her house. I liked it so much that asked her for the recipe. This is just like a good plate lunch at a diner. Wasn’t familiar with your website, but after eating this dish, I quickly bookmarked your website. Have already seen many other recipes that I’m anxious to try – especially the slow-cooker recipes as I work and it’s such a timesaver. Good job!
Thanks so much Mitch!
Why doesn’t the nutritional information print. It is listed at the bottom of the recipes, but in the print preview it is omitted. I use that information all the time.
Sorry Sue, our website is only set to print the recipe portion of the post.
Great recipe. My husband despises Mustard so I subbed red wine and worsteshire for the ketchup and mustard. Will def add to my rotation.
That sounds like a delicious substitution Jennie! So glad you both were able to enjoy it.
I want to try this recipe, but work 9 hr days. What should I do differently to make sure it doesn’t burn or fall apart?
We’ve only made this recipe as listed Kellie, but other readers have had success cooking it for longer or letting the crockpot sit in the “warm mode” until they are ready to enjoy it!
looks awesome
Thanks Michael!
This looks amazing! Gonna def try!
I hope you love it Diane!
Easy and delicious!
Thanks Donna, glad you enjoyed them!
This turned out great. I will definitely make again! I had to substitute the package gravy and the Panko breadcrumbs with Gluten Free products and I made it with ground turkey. Otherwise, followed as directed and it came out perfect!
So happy to hear that Rendy! Those would be delicious substitutions!
My husband loves this recipe, especially with mashed potatoes. I make extra gravy for the potatoes. EASY!!!!! Love using the crock pot in this summer heat.
Isn’t the crock pot a lifesaver when you don’t want to turn on the stove or oven?! So happy you guys loved it!
This looks delicious! I was wondering if you could make this without the mushrooms?
Hi Audra, you could omit the mushrooms if you wish.
This looks wonderful, gonna try soon.
It is really wonderful Marcia! Let us know what you think!
Have to try !
I hope you love it John!
My 12 year old loves Salisbury steak. She said this one makes all the other ones she’s tried taste like crap. High praise from a 12 year old picky eater. Hubby loves it too. They ask for this at least once every couple of weeks. I have a huge crock pot, so I always make a double batch to make sure that there are leftovers.
Yay!! So happy to hear that they love it Mathilda! Definitely high praise coming from a picky eater!!
Have not tried this recipe yet, but would like to know if something else could be used instead of panko?
Any type of bread crumbs or cracker crumbs should work just fine!
Are they plain or italian crumbs? The recipe doesn’t specify.
I use plain but either would work just fine.
It’s 1:30 a.m. and have not tried it yet. Surely looks good!
Thank you! I hope you get a chance to try the recipe and love it!
