Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak is one of our favorite comfort foods. Tender beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy with mushrooms and onions. This crockpot salisbury steak is perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta!

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals! I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles. Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!
Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.
The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.
A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak
This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.
- Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
- Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
- Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
- Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.
Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea
Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.
This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

Holly, I’m a little confused about the clove of garlic. Do you just drop it into the crock pot for flavor? Or do you mince it and add it to the other ingredients? Thanks. I’m very eager to give this a try.
The clove of garlic is minced and added in during instruction 2. Hope that helps Kat! Enjoy the recipe!
This recipe has become a family favorite. I always double the patties so I have a quick “back up meal” for another time. I made it on a vacation trip with our friends and they loved it too! Thank you for sharing and I can’t wait to try more of your recipes!!
So glad you loved this one as much as we do Leigh!
So yummy! It turned out perfect! Holly, Why oh why did I just get to discover you food blog few months ago? Love your recipes!
Aww, thank you so much Peggy!! I’m so happy you found me too! :)
Tried this today and am not impressed. Very bland tasting and just had a mushy texture. Disgusting unfortunately.
Sorry you didn’t enjoy this, we make it frequently and it always comes out great for us!
The taste was very good but the gravy was like paste. The added cornstarch mixture made it too thick and it was not silky translucent like the video. I followed the recipe to the tee, except didn’t know where to add the milk for the patties.
Robert, you add the milk for the patties when you mix all of the ingredients together. I’m sorry that the gravy didn’t work for you. I could suggest adding less cornstarch next time, an add a little at a time until the gravy reaches the consistency you prefer. Thank you for trying the recipe!
What size Crock Pot is this recipe scaled for? Could I double it in my 6 qt. or would that be too much? I love to cook extra when possible.
I have tested this recipe in both a 4qt & 6qt slow cooker, this should work just fine doubled in a 6qt slow cooker.
Thank you, Holly. I’ll be trying it!
I’m anxious to try this recipe! I have a question though, I forgot the beef broth…are you able to use water?
You can use water or even chicken broth. If you use water and happen to have a bouillon cube on hand, you might like to add it in!
I have made this several times, it is my family’s favorite recipe, and they ask me to make it often. My children have all learned how to make this, the two youngest ( 11 & 13 ) are still learning with complete interest! All of my children Love to cook, and are very good at it!
I am truly one Blessed and proud Mama!!
It’s great to get the children involved Connie! So glad they love this Salisbury Steak!
This recipe was so easy to follow. It turned out even better than I had expected. Meat was fork tender and the gravy was delicious on it. Bravo!
So glad you enjoyed it Kathleen!
I seared the patties after I salted and peppered them, then added a few splashes of worcestershire sauce…added a note of flavor and the patties were a nice dark brown color with a good crust. I also used sodium free beef broth since I salted the patties.
Turned out great!
Sounds delicious, I am so glad you loved them!
I finally got around to trying this and loved it. I don’t know why I stopped eating it over 30 years ago.
So glad to hear you loved this Curt! We do too!
You mentioned that a person could use pre-made frozen patties. I’m not sure if you mean pre-made at the store or pre-made at home…or if that matters but the frozen ones usually say on the box not to unthaw prior to cooking so would you still sear those for 3 minutes per side before adding them to the slow cooker? They would only be partially cooked and maybe still partially frozen so would they fall apart or cook properly in the slow cooker?
Searing the store bought pre-made frozen patties before adding them to the slow cooker will add a lot of flavor to the dish. They will not fall apart, and will finish cooking in your slow cooker!
This was really good! I had to leave out the mushrooms because of restricted diet but it was still so very good. I think I’ll use 1 1/2 the ingredients for the gravy next time. My husband loved this over mashed potatoes and it wasn’t enough gravy. He told me to definitely put it into the favorites file in Pinterest, lol! Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you for Pinning the recipe Kristi! So glad your husband loved it!
Tried this recipe and was thrilled. Salisbury steak came out fantastic and the gravy was really, really good. Thank you for this great recipe.
You’re welcome Richard. So glad you loved it!
Excellant
This is the easiest and best Salisbury steak recipe! My 2nd time making this, everyone loves it! I don’t think there’s ever enough, it’s gobbled up, next time I’ll make 2 batches, separate crock pots, lol. I make it exactly as the recipe reads except a splash of Worchestershire sauce . I’ll serve this over garlic mashed potatoes, recipe within. Thank you for sharing! YUM!!!!
I’m so happy to hear how much you loved the Salisbury Steak! You made my day :)
I am anxious to make this for our large family dinner on Thursday. One question: Do you cook this in the crock pot for 5 hours on low or high setting? Thanks!
5 hours on low.
Will you be able to make this in a insta pot
What do you think about the insta pot
I want to buy one do you have any suggestions
On this
I love my Instant Pot but haven’t tried this recipe in it. You can find some info about the Instant Pot here.
Aloha Holly,
Do you have a recipe for brown gravy? I don’t like to use package food when possible!
I’m sorry, I don’t have a recipe for brown gravy on my site.
When I found this recipe, I knew it was close to what my mom used to make (and since I can’t find her recipe)! I have made this several time the boyfriend & roommate just love it. I have to alter this slightly with being wheat/gluten intolerant border line Celiac (not easy). The beef broth, brown gravy mix & the bread crumbs are all gluten free and it still turned out perfect!!
Thank you so much for sharing!!
I’m so glad that you could adapt and enjoy this great Salisbury Steak recipe Stacie!
