Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals!  I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles.  Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!

Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.

The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.

A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak

This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.

  • Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
  • Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
  • Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
  • Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.

Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea

Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.

This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

  1. Hi Holly, I am making your salisbury steak in crockpot now but its for tomorows dinner. I can’t wait to try it! It smells so good in my kitchen right now.

      1. I have some frozen pre-made parties that I need to use up. Could I use them in this recipe? Should I adjust the cooking time.

  2. Tried this for dinner and hubby loved it! He was a little skeptical at first since some recipes we have found online we didn’t like. This will definitely go in our rotation! We did just use 1lb of hamburger and it was a perfect portion size for us! Thank you!5 stars

    1. I’ve made a similar recipe in the IP. I find searing the patties to be easier in a frying pan (they’re hard to flip in the IP). I layered mushrooms in the bottom and cooked on high pressure for 18 minutes with a quick release.

  3. I generally don’t eat anything like this but my husband loves Salisbury steak. Well, we have never tasted anything like this, it was absolutely delicious and even I loved it. Will definitely be making this time and time again!5 stars

    1. I have only tried the recipe as written. Omitting the milk will change the consistency, so you may want to replace it with broth or something (a little at a time).

  4. I have made this recipe 3 times and it is fantastic. The last time I made it was for a dinner party for 6. This is not a typical recipe for a dinner party, but it was after New Years and instead of a stuffed Pork Tenderloin, I thought, lets make something with gravy and mashed potatoes. It was a hit and everyone wanted the recipe. Thanks, it is one of our favorite go to recipes and so easy. Served it with roasted onions.5 stars

  5. This was a huge hit in my family. The kids loved it. Two out of the three kids are not fans of “gravy”, but insist on having this one with their Salisbury Steaks. Plus it is great for game days in my house, all three kids play sports and my husband is a coach. Thank you so much!5 stars

      1. This should work fine on high for 3 hours. You’ll want to ensure your beef reaches 160°F.

  6. I was wondering if I could prep this the night before? I work early in the morning. Should I sear the meat tonight or in the morning? I can’t wait!!

    1. Yes, it can be prepped the night before. I would sear in the morning as the meat isn’t really cooked through when seared.

  7. This was a real winner. I put a little Worcestershire in with the meat. If I had red wine I might of put This a little in the sauce. It was soooooo good.5 stars

  8. Wonderfully easy. I love Salisbury steak and this is great for me to make while I’m at school. Serve over rice or mashed potatoes. My family loves it over cheddar bacon mashed potatoes!

  9. wow! Ésta receta la huelo desde España, deliciosa! Ja ja ja ja ja. La haré el lunes. Gracias y besitos a toneladas

    1. They salsberry stake was so good i loved it and my daughter did to i will be making it lot of times to come for supper thank you so much5 stars

  10. I love the  crockpot Salsberry steak ! Mine turned out a bit mushey. How can I fix this? Other then this it was Anazing will now be a family favorite!

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed the flavor.

What kind of beef did you use (lean/extra lean)? The beef will definitely be soft but shouldn’t be mushy.

  11. This is the 2nd time I’ve made this and it was again wonderful!! Absolutely delicious!!
Thank you for sharing this with us!5 stars

  12. I fixed the Salisbury steak recipe tonight and it was wonderful. My husband loved it and it will go in the box marked very good!!! Thank you!!!5 stars

    1. Any ground beef will work just fine, you may have a little bit more fat in your sauce but you can skim any fat off before adding the cornstarch mixture.

    1. I find that using the whole egg makes the patties too moist so they don’t hold together as well.
