Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak is one of our favorite comfort foods. Tender beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy with mushrooms and onions. This crockpot salisbury steak is perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta!

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals! I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles. Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!
Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.
The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.
A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak
This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.
- Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
- Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
- Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
- Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.
Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea
Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.
This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

I made this recipe a few weeks ago and my family LOVED it. They keep asking for it again…so it’s on the menu tonight. I followed the recipe exactly except that instead of putting the mushrooms and onions raw on the bottom of the crockpot, I sautéed them in the meat drippings with a couple teaspoons of cooking sherry until they were a bit caramelized and put them on top of the patties and poured the gravy over top. Thank you for sharing this recipe! It’s one of our new favorites.
That sounds delicious Jen! Glad you loved the recipe!
Making this for our supper tonight.House smells great!looking forward to trying it!.Thanks for the recipe
This was recipe was so easy to put together and tasted so good. The family loved it and this recipe will be made many times in the future. Thank you.
You’re welcome Cynthia! Glad the family loved this recipe!
This is an amazing recipe!! And my first time ever making Salisbury steaks. Will be making this on a regular basis!!
I’m so glad you loved it Cynthia!
Hi Holly, could I make this in a conventional oven if so how long would I cook it for & on which setting, thank you , Chrisi
While I have only tried as written, other readers have baked it at 350 for 45-60 minutes with success. Let us know how it turns out for you Chrisi!
Can I add Worcestershire sauce and how much?
I have only tried the recipe as written, but I’d think that would be a delicious addition Kellie! I’d suggest starting with one teaspoon and adding more to suit your taste.
My patties turned out tuff. I thought they would be tender using the crockpot, any suggestions?
I agree, they should be tender. What type of meat did you use? Was it lean or extra lean? How long did they cook for?
Very delicious. Because I have picky eaters I diced the onion which worked out well. I seared beef steaks for 1 minute before putting them in crockpot.
Happy to hear your picky eaters enjoyed it Joe!
Made this Salisbury Steak recipe on the weekend and it was absolutely fantastic. Everyone had seconds. Got started a little late in the afternoon so I just used the high setting on the slow cooker for the first 1.5 hours.
Thank you… will be a family favorite forever.
I made this tonight, this was so good!! My husband said I’m going to have to make this again. Nice rich gravy, moist patties. I have some left for lunch tomorrow. Thank you!
One of the best slow cooker meals I have ever tasted! so yummy. New family favourite!
I made this recipe last evening I did not have minced onion , used regular onion turned out delicious will have again as a leftover. Served over mashed potatoes. Thank you. Going to have as a leftover
Awesome we have thls a lot.
Love this. I used cream of mushroom soup instead of mushrooms, (not a mushroom fan). I have a friend that was out of town for a week visiting and sent me a message to say they wanted Crookpot Salisbury steak when they got home.
Ah yay! So glad both you and your friend enjoyed this!
This is a new favorite. Easy & flavorful.
I’m pressed for time can I cook on high five r lesser amount of time if I brown the patties a little longer?
That should work just fine!
I love this recipe but use Pork chops or Pork loin steaks as Hubby doesn’t like disguised hamburgers as he calls it. A splash of Red wine when de-glazing the pan works really well :)
Is the gravy mixture supposed to cover the meat at the beginning? It doesn’t seem to be enough to do that.
It may not completely cover the patties. The mushrooms and meat will release more juices as well. :)
This recipe is delicious!!! A couple of recommendations…Brown the patties on each side before you put in the mushrooms and onions. Remove the patties and drain the grease then add the mushrooms and onions then the patties then the mixture. I cooked this recipe in my Ninja multipurpose crock pot/stovetop gadget so this may not apply if you brown the patties in a pan then transfer to the crock pot.
I cant even tell you how much I’ve made this recipe! Browning the patties before putting them in the crock pot does the trick. I double my sauce because love it so much!!
