Chili is one of my favorite dishes to make in cold weather. It warms your body after a cold day and it is so deliciously filling that my family always hopes there will be enough leftovers for the following day!

This recipe is so easy that you are going to wonder why you have never made your own chili powder before.

How Do You Make Chili Powder?

This chili powder recipe couldn’t be easier… simply combine your spices in a bowl and mix.  I keep it in a sealed jar in the pantry for several months!

The sweet flavor in chili powder comes from paprika which is a spice made from dried ground mild peppers.  This chili powder recipe calls for smoked paprika, which is an optional ingredient. If you don’t have it you can certainly omit it but it adds a lovely smoky depth of flavor to the mixture (and you can usually buy just as much as you need in the bulk aisle area).

I add a pinch of cayenne to add a touch of heat, if you like it spicy feel free to add a little extra (be careful, a little goes a long way).  If you prefer a very mild chili powder, you can leave the cayenne out completely or replace it with a bit of black pepper.

You likely have all of the spices you will need in your pantry and you will love the flavor of homemade chili powder!

This recipe for homemade chili powder can be used in many recipes to add a delectable kick to whatever you are cooking. It comes together in under 5 minutes and will store well for up to one years time if stored in a glass jar. I recommend storing your spices, including this one, away from your stove to keep it fresh.

  • cup sweet paprika
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 ½ teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin


  • Combine all ingredients and mix well.
  • Store in a sealed container up to 1 year.

  1. For all you Aussies out there, we call this taco seasoning. Americans refer to it as ‘chilli powder’ which is confusing because in Australia, chilli powder is…chilli powder (dried chillies ground up).5 stars

    1. We call that chili powder here to. The fact that there isn’t any real chili in really is a she. I use this as an inspiration for the chili seasoning mix I make. I put real chili powder in mine and have changed the amount of each seasoning to my taste. This was a great starting point, but as a real chili seasoning mix it really is disappointing. This is not what most Americans call chili powder.

  2. Hi there, would you use the whole amount that the recipe makes to replace a McCormick Chili Seasoning mix for 1 lb of meat. One packet of the McCormick is used for 1 lb of ground meat. Just not sure how much of the above made mixture to use. Thanks!

    1. Hi MK, you will want to use the quantity listed in the recipe you are making. We use this homemade chili powder in place os store-bought in our classic chili recipe.

  3. Would this count as an American style chili powder? I’ve found an enchilada recipe and it uses ‘american style chili powder’. (I’m from the UK)

    1. Hi Tony, this our version of chili powder. It would be more similar to the chili seasoning than paprika, you could try it as a substitute if you are unable to find the other.

    2. This is a fresh replacement for the packets. It seemed that I was always out of them when I decided to make chili. Those packets provided a small quantiy at a high price.5 stars

    3. Hi Tony, the American “Chili Powder” that you can by commercially is similar to the mix in the recipe above. Truthfully, they really should call it “Chili Seasoning” but the big brands do not for whatever reason.

      In this recipe (like in the commercial versions) there are Paprika powders (which are a mix of different mild chili peppers) and Cayenne, which is also a chili. By weight in a “Chili Powder” concoction, it is often just a bit more of the chili ingredients than the other spices, so Chilies are the majority of the mix. I hope that helps.

  4. This recipe is AWESOME! Love all the natural, simple ingredients. Smells and tastes wonderful! We use it in taco seasoning recipe which calls for “chili powder” – can make without the additives that are normally in store-bought chili powder.5 stars

  5. I prefer ancho chili powder instead of paprika and make sure the oregano is Mexican oregano. There is a definite difference in flavor and aroma. Everything else seems A-OK to me. Some additional ingredients to play around with are coriander and unsweetened cocoa powder.

    Not to be a downer, but how is this Chili powder if it has no Chili’s in it? Chili powder is supposed to be ground, dried Chili peppers – sometimes with the addition of other spices.

    Perhaps call it a Chili seasoning mix?

    2. Adam, I assume you are not American. American chilli powder is a spice blend of various herbs/spices. In other countries it’s made from dried chillies ground up

    2. In most US grocery stores, there are spices jars labeled “Chili Powder” (from a myriad of different brands like McCormick, Spice Island, etc) that offer a mixture of different seasonings to make up something they call “Chili Powder” which is intended to make “chili”.

      US manufacturers usually identify single chili pepper powders by the specific pepper name, e.g., “Ancho Powder”, “Paprika”, “Cayenne” or “Chipolte Powder”.
