Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak is one of our favorite comfort foods. Tender beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy with mushrooms and onions. This crockpot salisbury steak is perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta!

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals! I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles. Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!
Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.
The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.
A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak
This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.
- Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
- Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
- Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
- Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.
Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea
Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.
This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

What if I accidentally put the cornstarch in the water already in the mix do I have to add more water
It should work out fine. If needed at the end you can still thicken it with a cornstarch slurry.
Excellent!
I only have panko that says Japanese style, not plain. Is that ok to use?
Yes, that’s perfect Michelle.
Thank you!! Can’t wait to make tomorrow.
Enjoy Michelle!
Enjoy Michelle!
In these recipes, some mention garlic, but never mentions it in instructions!
The garlic is added in step 2.
Can you cook it on high to reduce cooking time?
Yes, that should work just fine!
Just put this in my slow cooker, only I used ground venison. I can’t wait until supper to see how it turns out!
Tried this recipe and it was real good. Will make it again.
This was yummy and very easy, two of my favorite food compliments. Highly recommend you try this. It has quickly become a favorite. I cook for one so this will easily be frozen in small packages for future meals.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it Donna!
I will be converting this to low carb with just a small change. My husband has recently lost over 50 pounds going low carb and has a few more to go.
Wow! Congratulations to your husband, what a great accomplishment!
Carolyn, you can check out Holly’s Easy Low Carb website for more low carb recipes!
Excellent and oh so easy!! Thank you for posting!
Can you do this on high and for how log?
I would suggest 2.5-3 hours on high.
What size crockpot did you use ? I have a 7qt crockpot iis that too large?
I have made this recipe successfully in both a 4QT and a 6QT slow cooker. This recipe is fairly forgiving so I think it would work just fine. You’ll just want to make sure you have enough liquid (and could always increase the gravy portion if needed).
Hello, I work so I put this in the crock pot this morning however I only have 4 settings. High for 4 or 6 hours or low for 8 or 10 hours. I set it on low for 8. If it cooks that long are there any concerns? Thanks!
Your meat may be a little bit overcooked if you leave it on low for 8 hours.
Wondering how this would be with premade burger patties or with ground turkey?
I have only tried it as written however I have had a few readers use premade patties and said it was great that way too!
Someone may have already asked this but what type of mushrooms did you use? Just saw this on Facebook and I am very excited to make this my husband and I love salisbury steak and I plugged it in to weight watchers and it’s even on my diet.
I used fresh white mushrooms but you can use brown mushrooms in this recipe as well. Enjoy, it’s one of our favorites!
I made this for dinner . I deglazed the pan with 3Tbsp of Marsala wine and added it to gravy mixture. It was delicious !! Keep slow cooker receipes coming!
That would make a great addition to this recipe! Thank you for sharing!
Fresh mushrooms or canned? If I use fresh will it water it down?
I use fresh mushrooms, it doesn’t water the recipe down. :)
All I can say is omg! This was delicious! I made one alteration, I cooked in the crock pot on high for three hours. My one son does NOT like hamburger. So after mixing all the ingredients, I flatten the entire 1.5lb of mixed beef in a huge rectangle. I then cut down the middle and across twice, evenly spaced. I ended up with 6 square patties, and browned those. The meat mixture was so moist and full of flavor and since I didn’t make round patties, the combo convenienced my son that Salisbury meat is just a different cut off beef. He loved it. Thanks for the recipe!!
I’m making this tomorrow but I’m using a blend of Ground beef and venison!! I’m sure it will be delicious!! Love Salisbury Steak! Thanks for sharing this recipe!!

I’m so glad your family loved if Heather! Thank you for the tip with the premade patties.
