Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals!  I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles.  Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!

Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.

The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.

A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak

This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.

  • Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
  • Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
  • Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
  • Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.

Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea

Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.

This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

  1. I made this for dinner tonight and I came out loooking like a Top Chef. My husband hardly came up for air and when he did it was to say yumm. He was really concerned though that there would not be enough leftovers, but I reassured him there was plenty since I doubled the recipie. Just a note- I added a tablespoon of the Dijon Mustard to the hamburger mix. I then threw in about 2 extra tablespoons of the bread crumbs. This will be added to the monthly menu with much happiness. Thank you for sharing.

    1. I am so glad you and your husband loved this recipe! I love the idea of adding a bit of dijon to the meat mixture!

  2. Ok. After eating this, I’ll just say it was amazing! The ingredients cost about $15 including the potatoes. I made 4 patties, but there are only two of us in the house, so I have plenty for tomorrow’s lunch. I plan to make egg noodles with the leftovers.

Make the recipe as written and you will not be disappointed.

Thank you very much for sharing it. I am certain it will go into my go-to meal list forever.

    1. I use an 80/20 mix (lean rather than extra lean). The 93% would be quite lean but I do think it would still be great. The patties get very tender in the slow cooker.

  3. I’m making this right now. Thank you for sharing it Holly. I’ll update with my thoughts after eating it.

  4. Making it tonight for supper. But on the stove since I work 10 hours a day. A slow cooker wouldn’t work for me.I tweeked the recipe alittle sine I didn’t have a couple of things. But it sir smells good. Ty

  5. I just made this. I’m waiting for the family reviews. I made the mistake of not putting the package brown gravy mix in at the same time of the broth. I added it with the cornscorn starch. Hopefully it will turn out just as good. Fingers crossed

  6. I’m in the process of making this now!! I’m so excited to try it out! I used my parent’s meat loaf recipe to make the patties being that the recipe for yours is almost similar! Only difference is we use 1 tsp of garlic powder instead of minced garlic cloves and 1Tbsp of Morton Nature’s Seasoning instead of salt!

  7. Was wondering what to do if you live in a place where gravy mix is not available. What can I use in place of it?

  8. I only have a small crockpot :/ but my husband really wants me to make this for him . Should I just half all the ingredients ?

    1. It depends on the size of your slow cooker. You could certainly half the ingredients but I would leave the cooking time the same.

    1. I haven’t tried it but I think it would work just fine. You would want to cook until tender which should be about 6-8 hours.

  9. Made this last night. It was so good! Try it! I know this is a crock pot recipe but I had to bake it in the oven at 350 for an hour because of time. I modified the recipe a little bit. I added a total of 3 eggs to the meat mixture. I also added 4 cups of broth and 2 packs of Pioneer brown gravy mix instead of what the recipe called for because I wanted more gravy. Glad I did. We needed the extra gravy. This recipe was plenty for 4 adults. There were leftovers for work. I made buttered noodles for the base. No complaints at all.
