Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals! I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles. Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!
Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.
The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.
A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak
This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.
- Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
- Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
- Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
- Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.
Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea
Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.
This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

this is very tasty and simple, made 3 times and my 12 yo son and his friends gobbled it up, thank you
I’m so glad Kristin! Definitely a favorite around here too!
This was a very easy recipe and tastes great glad I tried it
Glad you liked it, Mike!
What could I use instead of mushrooms the rest of the ingredients look delicious
If you’re looking for flavor, beef broth is fine. If you’re looking for vegetables, I would suggest zucchini or maybe even sweet potatoes.
I love this recipe and will try it tomorrow. Thank You so much for posting it !!!
I’m making this for the third time. This is one of my favorite slow cooker meals, it has been on for about 4 hours now and the whole house smells terrific. Thank you for posting this recipe.
I am so glad you have been enjoying this recipe, Larry! I have to agree, it really does make the house smell fantastic doesn’t it? Thanks for stopping by!
going to try this looks delicious
This was easy and delicious! I had more than 1.5 pounds of ground beef and it made 7 patties. My boyfriend ate it with mashed potatoes and greens. He loved it! Thanks for the recipe!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe.
I made this last night and it was delicious! My only issue is the strong onion taste from the burgers. It’s a bit strong for me. In your opinion, do you think it would work if I saute the onion before I mix it with the ground beef? Would this still keep the burger moist? The gravy was soooo good!! This is definitely a keeper. Even though there was the extra step of browning the burgers, this is a very easy recipe to prepare. Thank you.
You could certainly sautee them first. You’ll want to let them cool completely before adding them to the beef mixture.
How can this be converted to make in an electric Power Pressure Cooker?
I haven’t tried this recipe in the pressure cooker so I can’t say for sure.
Made this today for my daughter and her husband. Doubled the recipe and brought home half for my husband. Everyone loved it! The gravy has such depth…so yummy. Served with mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts. Excellent meal. Thanks for sharing this delightful recipe.
I’m so glad your family loved this recipe Kat! :)
It seems I never have enough liquid and the meat burns. Am I cooking too long or what? Thank you
I haven’t had that problem in the slow cooker. You could certainly add in a little bit of extra (hot) broth if needed.
All of your recipes are so yummy! Thanks for sharing them!!! <3
You’re welcome, Angie! We’re glad to hear that you love them :)
if you want to double this recipe would it be recommended to use two slow cookers or can you layer the patties?
You can layer the patties if your slow cooker is 6QT or larger.
This is the fourth recipe from your collection that I’ve made for my family. This one, was once again a success! Everyone loved it and it was fun and easy to make. Thank you again!
I’m so glad everyone loved it Kelly! It’s one of our all time favorites!
Is browning the patty before really essential?
It helps keep the patties together.
Yummy!! I didn’t have any beef broth so I used French onion soup. I’ll be making this again.
can you cook potatos in the crock pot at the same time for a complete meal?
I don’t see why not!
Thanks for sharing
I’m allergic to mushrooms would this taste OK without?
Yes, it will still have a good flavor. I hope you get a chance to try it! Maybe you could add in a vegetable you prefer in place of the mushrooms?
Have you ever tried this without mushrooms? We are not fans of mushrooms, but I’m guessing that is an important part of the flavor.
I haven’t tried it without mushrooms. You could try replacing them with extra onion.
