Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak is one of our favorite comfort foods. Tender beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy with mushrooms and onions. This crockpot salisbury steak is perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta!

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals! I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles. Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!
Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.
The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.
A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak
This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.
- Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
- Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
- Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
- Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.
Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea
Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.
This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

I just made this for the family. OMG…it was delicious!!! It has moved into the top five of things that will be a staple in our lives. Thanks!!
So glad you loved it Cindy! :)
What are your top 5 lol
This might be an odd question, but could I try and make this with ground turkey meat? Beef has become really heavy to me and I always feel sick after eating it, so I just always use ground turkey meat in its place
I haven’t tried it with turkey and although the flavor will be a little bit different I think it would work just fine.
I use ground meat and it is awesome. Just fragile so light handling
Yes, the step of browning them in the pan helps them keep their shape.
The fat ratio in turkey is much different in ground beef. You should try to compensate for that with another type of fat. Juicy, tender beef is because of the 80/20 (lean ratio) beef to fat ratio. Raw ground turkey is lean. But maybe if beef makes you feel ill and turkey doesn’t, its because you can’t process animal fat well (like me). Maybe try to reduce the cooking time for turkey to avoid drying it out?
I use ground turkey when i make mine comes out just as amazing
This was so good. I will definitely make this agin:)
I made this for dinner last night and it was amazing. I made it exactly like the recipe. It was so good that my husband literally licked his plate. Home run!
just put this in the crockpot, looking forward to supper
What type of ground beef do you use? I know your recipe states to use lean beef but would like to know if you use ground round or ground sirloin.
Either would work but I generally use ground round.
So good! My daughter’s favorite!
Your daughter has great taste Megan ;)
Would you be able to make this into a freezer crockpot meal? Or does it need to be cooked immediately?
I haven’t made this into a freezer meal however I wouldn’t recommend browning the patties and then freezing them for food safety reasons. If you do make a freezer meal, I’d suggest cooking the patties through or freezing it raw and then defrosting it before cooking.
I should think that as long as the meat had never been frozen before (because we know the rule that you can’t freeze, thaw, refreeze without cooking in there somewhere) that there should be no problem with brown then freeze. You would just need to know for sure that it had not been frozen. I have an extra fridge that will freeze things even on the warmest setting (I know but just keep water bottles and extra butter, leftovers, etc) but I know of very few persons with that problem.
It is actually safe to thaw and refereeze meat if thawed in the fridge (see USDA). Quality will likely be sacrificed, though. Fresh is always better, certainly.
If meat is thawed it must be cooked before regressing
This is my second time making this. We all loved it. My Granddaughter said these steaks are so moist and yummy. With mashed potatoes and peas perfect dinner.
I have frozen the Crock Pot Salisbury Steak leftovers and thaw them in the refrigerated part the day before I need. It turns out beautiful!
Just made this yesterday and it was mouthwatering. So delicious. I don’t use my slow cooker that often but I am now keeping a copy of the recipe inside it because I am sure it will be one of many more meals to come. Especially easy and good for company.
Step 3 says ‘combine remaining ingredients’ but step 5 says to combine the water and cornstarch. Is it added twice, or no added in step 3? Thanks.
It is added just once. Thank you for your comment, I’ve updated the recipe.
This looks fabulous! I need to use my slow cooker more….saved recipe to try!
Do you use fresh or dried minced onion?
I use fresh onion.
I could not wait to try this. No rare ingredients. Good home cooking. No subbing in ground turkey or something politically correct in today’s food fad phenonomenon. Just.good.food. This was outstanding. I made it exactly as you recommended. Usually I tweak something after preparing, but there is no need. Perfection. Thank you for sharing.
:) I am so glad you loved it Beth!
That is so funny! I just finished getting everything in the crochet pot and thinking it’s the first time in my life that I actually did the total recipe without tweeking, adding or subtracting. I hope I’m not disappointed.
Got this in the crockpot now – only thing it is a little time consuming – I usually like easy recipes but this looks so good! we wil see :)
Could you also use Cube Steak? Or does it have to be ground beef?
I have only tried it with ground beef. If you do try cube steak, I’d love to know how it works for you!
I was wondering the same. Did you try with cube steaks? How did come out? Thanks!

Curious, Did you find the recipe on Cambell’s website Vicky?
