Ingredient Notes for Grilled BBQ Chicken
- Chicken: Bone-in, skin-on chicken stays extra juicy and gives everyone a favorite piece, from tender breasts to flavorful thighs, drumsticks, and wings. Boneless breasts or thighs can be used, but they cook faster and need closer temperature checks.
- BBQ Sauce: Use a barbecue sauce you love since it adds most of the flavor. Because sweeter sauces caramelize quickly, it’s best to brush them on during the last part of grilling to keep them from burning.
Easy BBQ Variations
- Spicy BBQ chicken: Use a spicy barbecue sauce or stir in a little hot sauce.
- Honey BBQ chicken: Choose a honey-style sauce for a sweeter, stickier finish.
- Smoky BBQ chicken: Use a hickory or mesquite-style barbecue sauce, or add a pinch of smoked paprika to the seasoning.

How to Make BBQ Chicken
- Rub the chicken with oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Grill skin-side down first (full recipe below).
- Flip the chicken and brush with sauce as it finishes cooking.
Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving to ensure it stays juicy.

Save Every Saucy Bite
- Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and in the freezer for up to 4 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
- Reheat in the oven at 325°F, covered with foil, until warmed through. Brush with extra sauce before reheating to keep the chicken moist.
- Smaller pieces can also be reheated in the air fryer at a lower temperature, but watch closely so the sauce doesn’t scorch.

I haven’t made this one in the oven yet. You should try oven baked chicken breasts, Barbecue Chicken Foil Packets or Crispy Baked Chicken Legs. We especially love Oven Barbecued Ribs!
Made this exactly as directed tonight, and it was GREAT! Thanks for taking a seemingly overwhelming task (grilling a whole chicken) and making it easy (and delicious). This was so juicy, and the skin had a beautiful char. My whole family was raving. Thanks for sharing!
Tried this tonight. Came out perfect. Nice char on the outside. Chicken was very moist, cooked perfectly. This recipe is definitely a keeper.
Although you have some olive oil in the ingredientsit is not used in the preparation …
Thank you Nora! We rub the chicken with oil, then season. Updated!

Hi
This recipe is so simple and delicious . I am planing to do this weekend. One quick question. should I close the lid while cooking thighs?
Hi Raksha, I would recommend it. Closing the lid will keep a more consistent temperature on your grill and allow the chicken to cook more evenly!
The recipe is quite spicy and cool
Woooow…..Homemade!!! It’s the only thing that taste good! And so easy to do…
