Apple Pie Egg Rolls!! Warm crispy egg roll wrappers filled with a delicious and simple apple pie filling.

If you like the OLD McDonald’s apple pies (the fried ones!) you will LOVE these!

We love to dust these with powdered sugar or drizzle them with homemade caramel sauce!

I have a thing for anything apple pie from Apple Pie Bread to Upside Down Cheesecake Apple Pie! Apple pie just tastes like homemade comfort.

These apple pie egg rolls have been a top dessert on the blog for years and we’ve made them countless time. I may be aging myself but I remember back to the OLD Apple Pies from McDonalds (before they were baked)?  When they were crispy deep fried instead of flaky…  I loved those and THESE taste exactly like the original apple pies!

These yummy little bundles are filled with a simple homemade cinnamon apple filling kissed with cinnamon. When choosing apples for this recipe, you’ll want to make sure you use a softer variety of apple (and cut them small) as they cook very quickly!

If you use a harder variety of apple (such as granny smith) they may still be crisp when you cook the egg rolls.  Although I did not precook my filling, it can be put in the microwave for a minute or so and cooled before filling to slightly soften the apples if preferred.

If you’re in a hurry, you can use canned apple pie filling.  Chop the filling into small pieces (and I usually add an extra dash of cinnamon).

Roll the rolls tight and ensure the filling is well sealed because if it leaks, it will cause the oil to splatter. If you don’t use a deep fryer, you can fry these in 3/4″ of vegetable oil in a frying pan for a couple of minutes on each side until brown and crispy.  Drain well on paper towels and serve warm.

  1. I wonder if they can be frozen and put into fryer frozen? Prob would need inside to have been cooked before wrapping or use canned Pie Filling. Gonna have to try it both ways…fresh and frozen :)

  2. These were delicious!! Even my picky husband loved them!! My first time using egg roll wrappers…what a learning experience!

  3. Hey Holly, just wanted to say how much I loved this recipe! I used Braeburn apples and served with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream!
I am spreading the word about your blog and great recipes

  4. Im 45 and part Asian, when little my mother and I used to make these all the time when we ran out of the meat for the egg rolls, and had wrappers left over….we also did peaches and apples blended with a sweeten cream cheese…

  5. OH MY GOSH…these are going to our Christmas get together!!!!! I think I will use a cinnamon/sugar topping for the egg rolls…yumminess!! Thank you!

  6. Made these this evening – oh my gosh – they are WONDERFUL!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe, they are really, really good and I have now been inspired to make other dishes using the egg roll wrappers, which I’d never used before, thank you!! Great recipe!

  7. I made these last night and they are so good I thought I might have 1 left for breakfast but they finished them up!!

    1. No, filo is paper thin. Egg roll wrappers are thicker – like tortillas. You could use several layers of filo which would basically be apple strudel.

  8. These would be wonder with other fillings too. Even make them for thanksgiving as pumpkin pie egg rolls. I will have to experiment with various filings. I homeschool and this would be a great family project for the kids to see science and wrt all in one.

    1. When I warmed them, I did it in a frying pan. The microwave is not a great option as they don’t stay crispy. You could pop them into a 400 degree oven for about 10-12 minute as well.

  9. The Arby’s apple turnovers aren’t quite like the old McDonald’s ones, but I think they are even better… sooo good.

  10. hi i cant find egg roll wrappers…i got fillo dough sheets but they r thin..not sure how many to use ….where did u guys purchase ur egg roll wrappers?

    1. Egg roll wrappers are often located in the tofu section or near the produce area. If you ask at your local store, they should be able to direct you.

    2. you can find them right where the fresh vegetables are, and if you can’t find them there ask anyone that works there or in that area!

    1. Sounds like a great substitute. I’d like to know the answer also. I really can’t see why not though.

  11. I have made these with a healthier twist. You can BAKE these instead of fry them. Preheat your oven to 425. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray (I used butter flavor.). Place the rolls seam-side down and lightly mist with more cooking spray. After 10 minutes, flip them and cook additional 10 minutes (total of 20). Apples soften up nicely and no deep-frying mess.

I mixed some brown sugar and butter in with my apple mixture. SO good!!!

  12. Do you think these could be baked in place of fry? If so, at what temp. and how long? I am not a big oil frying person but these look to delicious to pass up.
