Apple Pie Egg Rolls!! Warm crispy egg roll wrappers filled with a delicious and simple apple pie filling.

If you like the OLD McDonald’s apple pies (the fried ones!) you will LOVE these!

We love to dust these with powdered sugar or drizzle them with homemade caramel sauce!

I have a thing for anything apple pie from Apple Pie Bread to Upside Down Cheesecake Apple Pie! Apple pie just tastes like homemade comfort.

These apple pie egg rolls have been a top dessert on the blog for years and we’ve made them countless time. I may be aging myself but I remember back to the OLD Apple Pies from McDonalds (before they were baked)?  When they were crispy deep fried instead of flaky…  I loved those and THESE taste exactly like the original apple pies!

These yummy little bundles are filled with a simple homemade cinnamon apple filling kissed with cinnamon. When choosing apples for this recipe, you’ll want to make sure you use a softer variety of apple (and cut them small) as they cook very quickly!

If you use a harder variety of apple (such as granny smith) they may still be crisp when you cook the egg rolls.  Although I did not precook my filling, it can be put in the microwave for a minute or so and cooled before filling to slightly soften the apples if preferred.

If you’re in a hurry, you can use canned apple pie filling.  Chop the filling into small pieces (and I usually add an extra dash of cinnamon).

Roll the rolls tight and ensure the filling is well sealed because if it leaks, it will cause the oil to splatter. If you don’t use a deep fryer, you can fry these in 3/4″ of vegetable oil in a frying pan for a couple of minutes on each side until brown and crispy.  Drain well on paper towels and serve warm.

      1. I imagine that you could use dried peaches and make a pie filling from those. My Mom used to do this for her southern fried pies. The flavor was intense and addictive!!

  4. these look great and I plan to make them this weekend. My apples are soft so I cant wait…yummy, thanks for posting!

  5. What a great idea. I just bought some egg roll wrappers today for a different recipe. I think I will try this, too, but might spritz with oil and bake. I don’t really fry much, either. Stopping by from All Things With Purpose blog party.

  6. Yummy!! Could you make these with apple or cherry pie filling? The possibilities are endless:) Lynn @ Turnips 2 Tangerines

  7. Was it just me, or did anyone else find that the apples and filling weren’t cooked? Was I supposed to cook the filling first?

    1. I didn’t cook the apples first and mine cooked through. I did dice them quite small and the variety I used was quite soft. (It was fresh off of an apple tree so I can’t say for sure what type it was).

      1. I would think it depends largely on the type of apple you use. I would try Boscop or Topaz . Will also try with flaky pastry in oven (less calories).

      1. Wonton wraps are very thin you must have had two or more stuck together I noticed that while make up some wontons some wontons had as much as three wraps stuck together before I realized lol I make sure now!

    1. Same as a fried burrito, moisten the edges of the final fold with some water, press down fairly tightly and chill them to firm them up before frying

    1. Almost all grocery stores have them. The two places I see them are in the produce area or near the “tofu” and soy products. If you ask your local store, they will be able to direct you. They are a refrigerated item.

      1. Also most asian stores sell them in the freezer department (luckily we have about a dozen or so in a 10 mile radius, lol), that is where we find ours, can’t wait to try this, looks so delish!

    2. Barbara, in food stores, just ask and they will direct you to them. Shops-Rite sells them if you live in the NY/NJ area!!

  8. OH, those McD apple pies, they were good….
can’t wait to try my hand at these….
(and in a pinch, you should try the KFC apple pies… very reminiscent)

    1. Yes KFC are just about the exact as MC Donalds pies from the past but a little less sweet. Can’t wait to try this not going to bother folding into eggroll shape just going to Fold the egg roll dough in half and pinch sides like the old pies seems easier.

    2. Hate to burst all your bubbles in regards to Mcdonald’s hot apple pies…………… But they use potato and flavor them to taste like apples (potato is much cheaper then apples) My son’s girlfriend use to work there, this is how I know

      1. No they do not use potato – anyone with one eye and half sense knows what the apple tastes like and looks like. McD does not make the apple pie there – they come frozen and ready to cook. Just another rumor like they use earthworms to make hamburger!

      2. I know this is a very old post, but I’m going to add my 2¢ regarding the freezing of egg rolls – either sweet or savory.

I make egg rolls all the time (as a matter of fact, at the moment I should be filling and rolling two dozen pork and shrimp egg rolls instead of surfing the ‘net – I made the filling yesterday).

After much experimentation, I discovered it’s far better to fry the egg rolls and then freeze, as opposed to freezing them and then frying as needed.

When egg rolls are fried from frozen, the wrappers don’t bubble up and become shatteringly crisp the way they do when they’re fried at room temperature. Instead, they’re quite…chewy! (And you cannot thaw them first; the moisture in the filling will seep into the wrapper and the wrapper will literally disintegrate).

Once filled and rolled, I fry them all, let them drain on a brown paper bag, then place them on a rimmed baking sheet lined with wax paper and pop them in the freezer. Once frozen, I wrap them individually in Press ‘n Seal, pack them into food storage freezer bags, and back into the freezer they go.

Then, when you want to eat them, take out as many as you need and bake them directly from the freezer in a preheated 400° oven for 20 minutes.

Doing it this way will ensure your egg rolls will have the right texture, and is actually easier than having to get out the pot and oil every time you want to eat some!

      3. Well, if they are, I wish I could get my potatoes to taste that good!! I can’t believe how gullible some people are.

  9. These look SO easy & delicious! I TOTALLY remember the Mickey Deez Fried pies! lol..SO much better, but not so good for us haha..All things in moderation:)

    Love your blog!!
