Apple Pie Egg Rolls!! Warm crispy egg roll wrappers filled with a delicious and simple apple pie filling.

If you like the OLD McDonald’s apple pies (the fried ones!) you will LOVE these!

We love to dust these with powdered sugar or drizzle them with homemade caramel sauce!

I have a thing for anything apple pie from Apple Pie Bread to Upside Down Cheesecake Apple Pie! Apple pie just tastes like homemade comfort.

These apple pie egg rolls have been a top dessert on the blog for years and we’ve made them countless time. I may be aging myself but I remember back to the OLD Apple Pies from McDonalds (before they were baked)?  When they were crispy deep fried instead of flaky…  I loved those and THESE taste exactly like the original apple pies!

These yummy little bundles are filled with a simple homemade cinnamon apple filling kissed with cinnamon. When choosing apples for this recipe, you’ll want to make sure you use a softer variety of apple (and cut them small) as they cook very quickly!

If you use a harder variety of apple (such as granny smith) they may still be crisp when you cook the egg rolls.  Although I did not precook my filling, it can be put in the microwave for a minute or so and cooled before filling to slightly soften the apples if preferred.

If you’re in a hurry, you can use canned apple pie filling.  Chop the filling into small pieces (and I usually add an extra dash of cinnamon).

Roll the rolls tight and ensure the filling is well sealed because if it leaks, it will cause the oil to splatter. If you don’t use a deep fryer, you can fry these in 3/4″ of vegetable oil in a frying pan for a couple of minutes on each side until brown and crispy.  Drain well on paper towels and serve warm.

  1. I made these yesterday and they went fast. I would like to freeze these but not sure if I should freeze before frying them or after, what would you recommend?

  2. All of these recipes for apple dishes look and sound wonderful. My question for these is where does the cast iron pan come in like the first recipe indicated? Made with cast iron pans for making recipes yet I didn’t find any use of that pan.

  3. I made these after dinner last night , all I had was granny smith apples so I precooked them for just a couple of minutes then mixed them with everything else in the recipe and they had no problem getting done . I made a dozen and they didn’t even last an hour , the entire family loved them , and they were so easy to make.

  4. I used pear and sliced it small without the lemon. Instead of powdered sugar I rolled them in cinnamon sugar and it tasted really good!

  5. my Mom made these, with pie dough & we called them pillows.. cause that’s what they looked like… cut into circles & fill then fold in half… they were very good… had them with ice cream..:D

  6. Well, I tried these. They did NOT turn out like Mc Donald’s or even as pictured. If you don’t eat them IMMEDIATELY, they flatten out and are floppy, NOT crispy at all. But you can’t eat them right away as they are so HOT … so it’s a catch-22. Maybe with real pie dough they’d be better and not as soft/mushy.

    1. I’m sorry these didn’t work out for you, I’ve made them several times with great results. May I ask what temperature your oil was at?

  7. Hi – thought I’d let you know that the new air fryer works magic with apple egg rolls. If your powdered sugar is not sticking I just LIGHTLY spray a bit of butter flavored Pam & it stays put. Love your homemade apples Thanks again for a great recipe.

  8. Yum!….. I love the McDonalds apple pies!
But we still have the fried ones here in Australia…. They are so good!

  9. I simmered my apples in butter and the seasoning for 5-8 mins first and let rest in fridge for 5, before rolling in egg roll wrap.

  10. Used a different recipe that I like for the filling, but the egg roll idea was fantastic! Made them for my birthday party this weekend and they were a huuuuge hit! Got rave reviews. Thanks for the idea! We will definitely be making them again.
