Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

This easy Salisbury steak one of our favorite family meals!  I love using my slow cooker any time of year! We serve this on top of garlic mashed potatoes or rice but my all time favorite is serving it over cooked macaroni noodles.  Add a side salad and you’ve got the perfect meal!

Since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, I love coming home to a ready meal and this easy slow cooker Salisbury Steak recipe tops my list.

The beef patties simmer all day in a rich gravy with mushrooms and onions resulting in a really flavorful dish and making them extra tender.

A lot of people confuse Salisbury steaks (which is a combination of ground beef in gravy) with Swiss Steak which is generally minute steak with a tomato-based sauce. (You can find my favorite Swiss steak recipe here).

Tips for Crockpot Salisbury Steak

This Easy Salisbury Steak can be prepared in a skillet but I love it in the slow cooker since it can be prepped ahead of time and it’s ready right when we get home from soccer practice.

  • Homemade patties: it doesn’t take long to make the beef patties homemade, and they taste absolutely delicious.
  • Sear the Patties: The simple step of searing the beef patties just helps them to hold their shape without falling apart plus browning meat always adds extra flavor!
  • Freeze Option: I often double the beef patties in this recipe and freeze half of them (without browning them first) for next time. If you happen to have pre-made frozen beef patties they can be used in this recipe as well with great results.
  • Ground Turkey Option: We have also made this recipe with ground turkey (I also add a bit of celery to the mixture) and a turkey gravy with great results. The patties always come out flavorful and fork tender.

Once seared the patties are layered in the Crock Pot with sliced onions and mushrooms. Next, I combine the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties. While some recipes do call for cream of mushroom soup, I prefer this version with a richer darker gravy.

Easy Salisbury Steak Leftover Idea

Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (we rarely do), this reheats perfectly and makes a great messy sandwich in a hamburger bun topped with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise.

This easy salisbury steak recipe reheats perfectly and freezes well too!

  1. OMGosh!!! This recipe is a keeper!!! 3 of us ate the entire recipe and my husband went back looking for more. There was only the delicious gravy so he made himself some “gravy bread” and ate that too! Great job on creating this one!!!!

    1. I don’t have that recipe posted Carol and I haven’t had it in years! I am definitely going to have to dig up my old recipe to share on the blog, it’s a family favorite!

  2. I love Salisbury steak and love my crock pot. I will be trying this today. I know it will be delicious.

  3. I’m making this tonight and using cubed steak. Coat the cube steaks with flour and brown them. Should be GREAT!

    1. While this isn’t always the case, generally a hamburger contains only meat or a larger portion of meat while Salisbury Steak contains binders (egg, breadcrumbs etc.) However, they’re often used interchangeably.

  4. Oh my gosh!!! This is one of my FAVORITE slow cooker recipes. We serve it on a bed of of smashed red potatoes. YUMMMMMMMMMMM!

  5. I am new to cooking so I get lost very easily. When you say dijon can I use honey dijon mustard?

    1. The honey dijon will be a little bit sweeter than a regular dijon mustard because of the added honey. I use either a dijon mustard without honey or a grainy dijon mustard.

  6. Found this recipe on Pinterest last night, it is in my crockpot as we speak, only been on for about an hour right now, but the aroma is so great already! I can’t wait to eat it tonight with my boyfriend. Mashed potatoes, a cesar salad and possibly some biscuits will be accompanying these patties. I am excited since I generally only use the crockpot on my days off so I can relax at home while dinner is cooking itself. :)

  7. I have made this several
Times and my family loves it ! Very easy to do… I come home on my lunch break, get everything in the crockpot then by time I get home in the evening it is ready
    To eat.

  8. I made this for dinner last night and it was an absolute hit!!! Even my picky mother said it was delicious. That’s saying something and this is now a new “favorite” meal. Being a slow cooker meal gives it an extra star. If you haven’t tried this yet, you must. The only thing I did different, is I replaced the Panko crumbs with 3 slices of whole wheat bread broken in med/small pieces and soaked in about 1/4 cup of milk. The patties just about melted in our mouths.

    1. I’m so glad you and you (and your mother) loved it! Thank you for the tip on the bread crumbs!

  9. I made this a few day ago and my husband and I loved it! We don’t like mushrooms, so I left that out. I was a bit worried this might change the flavoring, but it was fantastic! I used 1 pound of ground chuck, and I did 2 cups of beef broth (from bouillon cubes) instead of 1 1/2, a little more than a 1oz package of gravy mix. This made a lot of gravy–plenty extra for mashed potatoes (which we made as a side). I did not use fresh onion. My husband dislikes big chunks of onion, so I used dried onion pieces and that worked fine! I also did not measure out the dijon or the ketchup, I did a squirt of each and it didn’t seem to be any difference to me! I used dried oregano instead of parsley. Anyway, all the tweaks and it turned out great, I can’t wait to make this again!

  10. If I use lean meat how long do I cook it? I need to cook it on high because I got a late start today.

  11. Cooking for one right now and would like to freeze small portions. Have you tried freezing it after it’s done? If so, how was it.
Sound great, I’m going to try it this weekend!

    1. I have not tried freezing this recipe. Hopefully another reader has tried it and can offer some insight.

      1. I’ve frozen the recipe in those freezer zip lock bags. Can’t tell a difference! Still delicious!
