Apple Pie Egg Rolls!! Warm crispy egg roll wrappers filled with a delicious and simple apple pie filling.

If you like the OLD McDonald’s apple pies (the fried ones!) you will LOVE these!

We love to dust these with powdered sugar or drizzle them with homemade caramel sauce!

I have a thing for anything apple pie from Apple Pie Bread to Upside Down Cheesecake Apple Pie! Apple pie just tastes like homemade comfort.

These apple pie egg rolls have been a top dessert on the blog for years and we’ve made them countless time. I may be aging myself but I remember back to the OLD Apple Pies from McDonalds (before they were baked)?  When they were crispy deep fried instead of flaky…  I loved those and THESE taste exactly like the original apple pies!

These yummy little bundles are filled with a simple homemade cinnamon apple filling kissed with cinnamon. When choosing apples for this recipe, you’ll want to make sure you use a softer variety of apple (and cut them small) as they cook very quickly!

If you use a harder variety of apple (such as granny smith) they may still be crisp when you cook the egg rolls.  Although I did not precook my filling, it can be put in the microwave for a minute or so and cooled before filling to slightly soften the apples if preferred.

If you’re in a hurry, you can use canned apple pie filling.  Chop the filling into small pieces (and I usually add an extra dash of cinnamon).

Roll the rolls tight and ensure the filling is well sealed because if it leaks, it will cause the oil to splatter. If you don’t use a deep fryer, you can fry these in 3/4″ of vegetable oil in a frying pan for a couple of minutes on each side until brown and crispy.  Drain well on paper towels and serve warm.

  1. How do you cook the apples beforehand? The recipe doesn’t say cooked apples but someone else in the comments says they should be cooked first?

    1. Hi Angela, we have not tried making these in the oven. However, another reader baked these in the oven for 12 mins at 400°F. They do lose their crispy fried exterior though.

      1. Hi Mary, we have not tried this recipe in the air fryer but other readers have had great success! Good luck!

  2. Ok
I made them in a pinch. I used pie filling. But I did add a little flour and I cooked it for a few min just to mix in the flower. They were very good! I do think they would be better with fresh apples.
They did taste like McDonalds old fried pies!!!!!5 stars

  3. I have been making these for months BUT healthier option is massemble as direction then spray with olive oil and cook in hot air fryer( I use the little cake pan) turning half way to Brown both sides.
Also can add 1/2 oz lite cream cheese and nut to filling
Have done with different cooked fruit pie fillings.
    Yummy

    1. I’m sorry these didn’t work out for you, I’ve made them several times with great results. May I ask what temperature your oil was at?

  4. Made these for our Super Bowl party tonight. Huge hit, and super easy to make. Like apple pie stuffed fried dough. 5 stars

  5. Hi holly .
Can these be cooked in an air fryer ?
I have a farberware air fryer and I want to cook more snack things in them and dessert egg rolls would be good as well.
Please let me know by e-mailing me please.
These look good but I would rather cook themin my air fryer instead.

  6. Hello Holly,
I don’t care for the newer version of McDonald’s apple pies. Lately I’ve had a craving for their older classic version and came across your recipe. OMG! AMAZING I did tweak the recipe only slightly. I used 1 – 21 oz can, (2 cups) Duncan Hines/Comstock Original Country Apple Pie Filling & Topping. I lay filled pies on a platter to dry out for a bit prior to frying. I prefer generously sprinkling Pure Cane Demerara Sugar/Florida Crystals Sugar on both sides immediately after frying. It’s best to cool on a wire rack. Don’t be to quick to sample these delectable delights they stay HOT for a while!
These were a huge hit with everyone!
The canned version made 12 easy tasty pies Many thanks for sharing this recipe.5 stars

    1. Yes they can be baked (although they don’t come out quite as crisp). You’ll want to spray them well with oil before baking.

    2. I sprayed a foil lined cookie sheet with olive oil & sprayed the tops with olive oil and baked them at 400 for 12 minutes. They don’t get bubbly crisp on the outside. I dusted them with powdered sugar when they came out of the oven. However, since the bottoms do get a little crispy there is a crispness in every delicious bite!5 stars

  7. what are egg roll wrappers, is this American? can you please suggest something similar that we would have here in Australia to substitute

  8. All these apple desserts look so delicious! I’m going to have to try a few. Thanks for the recipes. I pinned this post!
