Holly’s Recipe Highlights For Chicken Divan

Chicken Broccoli Divan is an easy casserole originating in the Divan Parisien restaurant in New York. This version uses broccoli in a shortcut sauce.

  • Flavor: This casserole is cozy with a homey flavor.
  • Difficulty: Since the sauce starts with condensed soup, it’s quick and easy to prepare.
  • Make it from scratch: You can replace the canned soup in this recipe with homemade condensed soup.
  • Budget tip:  Stretch this recipe a little further with extra broccoli.
  • Time-saving tip: If you’re short on time, buy a bag of fresh or broccoli florets—they’re usually already washed and ready to go. Rotisserie chicken is great in this recipe.

Ingredient Tips For This Recipe

Chicken: This recipe uses cooked chicken, so it’s great for leftovers or rotisserie chicken. Poached chicken is also great for casseroles.

Broccoli: Fresh steamed broccoli gives the best flavor and texture. Frozen broccoli works as well but tends to be a little bit softer.

Sauce: Chicken Divan sauce is a shortcut sauce made with condensed mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, and seasonings.

Cheese: Sharp cheddar cheese adds flavor, pre-shredded cheese works well in this recipe.

Topping: Butter and Panko breadcrumbs give this Chicken Divan casserole a little crunch. No Panko? Try seasoned bread crumbs or crushed Ritz crackers instead!

Variations

Veggies: You can add other vegetables, such as cauliflower or asparagus. Cook just until tender-crisp.

Seasonings: Change the seasonings and add your favorite herbs. ½ teaspoon curry powder is a delicious addition.

Soup: Any “cream of” soup will work in this recipe, including cream of chicken soup or homemade condensed soup.

How To Make Chicken and Broccoli Divan

  1. Steam broccoli: Steam the broccoli until tender-crisp (it will cook more in the oven). Drain it very well.
  2. Mix sauce: Combine the divan sauce ingredients (recipe below). Add the chicken and broccoli.
  3. Bake: Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and top with breadcrumbs. Bake until browned.

Served alongside a fresh green salad and some bread with homemade garlic butter.

Serving and Storage

I serve this easy Chicken Divan recipe with rice, egg noodles, or creamy mashed potatoes.

Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. Chicken Divan reheats and freezes well. Add a splash of milk for reheating if needed.

  1. This recipe was easy and delicious! Served over rice. It has the perfect amount of spice. I’ll definitely make it again.5 stars

  2. I didn’t see any chicken being cooked prior, so I’m just curious do the chicken cubes get added raw or did I miss a step?

  3. We love this but I make a little different. Use half baby carrots with the broccoli then put chunks of turkey in spaces. Mix 1 soup with 1/2 can, cup, mayo, 1 tsp lemon juice and 1 tsp yellow curry, spread over all to soak down in. Cover with shredded sharp cheddar cheese then the layer of crumbs. You can adjust the curry and cheese to suit your self. My mother was British so the curry was not the hot stuff. Freeze before using if you must. Bake till bubbly and browned.
    Love it !5 stars

  4. could not have been an easier dish to make on a cold night! Easy and so good. Only change I made was I used cream of chicken soup as that’s what I had in the house….One dish of deliciousness. Thanks!!5 stars

  5. I have an ancient recipe for Chicken Divan, that calls for a 1/2 tsp. of curry powder to be added to the cream sauce before pouring onto the broccoli and chicken. It really gives it a boost. It was my five year old’s favorite dish, but the whole family (7 of us) loved it too.

  6. I would like to make this for pot luck. Would it be okay to add egg noodles, and should this be done after it cooks in the oven and then pop back in with the bread coating?
    Love your website.
    Thank you

  7. I have made several of your recipes, but I think this one is my favorite. This dish was excellent. I first satueed chopped onions and mushrooms and then added left over rotisserie chicken & broccoli. I didn’t have dry mustard, so I used regular yellow mustard and heavy cream instead of milk. It was full of flavor and was just so delicious. Everyone loved and asked for seconds. I will definitely make this again on a regular basis.
Thank you for this wonderful recipe. Robin5 stars
