Holly’s Recipe Highlights For Chicken Divan

Chicken Broccoli Divan is an easy casserole originating in the Divan Parisien restaurant in New York. This version uses broccoli in a shortcut sauce.

  • Flavor: This casserole is cozy with a homey flavor.
  • Difficulty: Since the sauce starts with condensed soup, it’s quick and easy to prepare.
  • Make it from scratch: You can replace the canned soup in this recipe with homemade condensed soup.
  • Budget tip:  Stretch this recipe a little further with extra broccoli.
  • Time-saving tip: If you’re short on time, buy a bag of fresh or broccoli florets—they’re usually already washed and ready to go. Rotisserie chicken is great in this recipe.

Ingredient Tips For This Recipe

Chicken: This recipe uses cooked chicken, so it’s great for leftovers or rotisserie chicken. Poached chicken is also great for casseroles.

Broccoli: Fresh steamed broccoli gives the best flavor and texture. Frozen broccoli works as well but tends to be a little bit softer.

Sauce: Chicken Divan sauce is a shortcut sauce made with condensed mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, and seasonings.

Cheese: Sharp cheddar cheese adds flavor, pre-shredded cheese works well in this recipe.

Topping: Butter and Panko breadcrumbs give this Chicken Divan casserole a little crunch. No Panko? Try seasoned bread crumbs or crushed Ritz crackers instead!

Variations

Veggies: You can add other vegetables, such as cauliflower or asparagus. Cook just until tender-crisp.

Seasonings: Change the seasonings and add your favorite herbs. ½ teaspoon curry powder is a delicious addition.

Soup: Any “cream of” soup will work in this recipe, including cream of chicken soup or homemade condensed soup.

How To Make Chicken and Broccoli Divan

  1. Steam broccoli: Steam the broccoli until tender-crisp (it will cook more in the oven). Drain it very well.
  2. Mix sauce: Combine the divan sauce ingredients (recipe below). Add the chicken and broccoli.
  3. Bake: Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and top with breadcrumbs. Bake until browned.

Served alongside a fresh green salad and some bread with homemade garlic butter.

Serving and Storage

I serve this easy Chicken Divan recipe with rice, egg noodles, or creamy mashed potatoes.

Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. Chicken Divan reheats and freezes well. Add a splash of milk for reheating if needed.

  1. This dish was excellent. I first satueed chopped onions and mushrooms and then added left over rotisserie chicken & broccoli. I didn’t have dry mustard, so I used regular yellow mustard and heavy cream instead of milk. It was full of flavor and was just so delicious. Everyone loved and asked for seconds. I will definitely make this again on a regular basis.
Thank you for this wonderful recipe. Robin5 stars

  2. So good. This was a huge hit with my family. This is getting printed and going on the regular meals list!5 stars

  3. I love this recipe. The only thing I do differently is mix all the cheese together with the other ingredients rather than using only one cup and layering the rest. It’s less watery that way.5 stars

  4. I love this recipe but lost my original copy, so thanks for posting it. I frequently.come to your website for delicious recipes that don’t break the bank; they are always dependable, so double thanks!
I DO often have trouble with the “skip to recipe” tab on your website. Maybe it’s my phone, but it’s a little tiresome when I’m in a rush. I mean, scrolling through probably costs me 5 more seconds . . . ;) Many thanks for a great, dependable recipe repository.

  5. Delicious, made it for the second time and very yummy. The only extra thing I did was put some extra bread crumbs on top, for a little extra crunch.5 stars

  6. Update: still our favorite! My daughter is a vegetarian so we swap 8 ounces of cooked pasta with the chicken. It comes out perfectly! My husband and I still prefer it with chicken. I upped the spices a bit too. I’ve never used seasoned salt before and it works so well in this recipe! Thank you so much5 stars

  7. I wish I’d watched the video before making. You added great extras and your assembly method was completely different!
    Tasted great though

  8. One of my favorite comfort food meals, and this recipe was delicious! My only changes were that I had slow-cooked, shredded chicken on hand instead of diced, and I used Ritz crackers instead of panko. Served over mashed potatoes – so good! I might consider 2 cans of soup for extra sauce next time. Thank you!5 stars

  9. Wonderful tasting recipe! It is so easy to make!
My husband loved it! Will put it in my 2 week rotation!!
    ThaNks Holly!5 stars

  10. Love this delicious and simple recipe!
My husband loved it! Will be making it over and over!
    Thanks so much Holly!5 stars

  11. Yum!!! I did saute half an onion, some fresh garlic and a handful of sliced mushrooms and added it to the mixture. Delicious! 5 stars

    1. I’ve made this with two boxes of flavored rice on the bottom before the broccoli and chicken. Complete dinner with a salad!

  12. This is a delicious recipe and easy to prepare, but I gave it only 3 stars because no way could I have added 1 1/2 lbs of broccoli and 3 cups of chicken listed in the ingredients.

I was only able to add 12 oz of broccoli and half the listed chicken. If I had added the amount of broccoli and chicken listed I would not have had enough sauce. I followed the instructions for the sauce very careful. I took a picture but I cannot submit it.

That said it was absolutely delicious! And I will make it probably once a week.3 stars

  13. This is one of our favorite recipes! The spices are perfect and add so much to the dish. We make it exactly as it’s written. My daughter became a vegetarian so we will make it for her without the chicken and it’s turns out great! Makes a nice side dish as well.5 stars

  14. Delicious!! I was looking for this recipe, thank you.
I thought the recipe part said to mix the chicken and broccoli into the soup mixture & then pour into dish, so that’s what I did and it was amazing! Usually it’s layered (like one part of your directions say) but mixed was so good too. Then I topped with cheese & Panko/butter. Sooo good, I can’t stop taking bites!

  15. so excited to try this tonight. I’ve made different versions of this dish. some call for curry powder. this is one of those dishes that you can use whatever you have on hand or any “cream of” soup. I put French’s onions on top bc I was out of bread crumbs. so yummy! making potatoes for the side5 stars
