Homemade Onion Soup Mix

We love having this homemade onion soup mix ready to go, and we know exactly what’s in it.

This homemade onion soup mix is great in soups like chicken noodle soup, but it works for just about anything you want to add some flavor to. Grilled chicken breasts, 4 Ingredient Chicken Rice Casserole, you name it!

What Is In Onion Soup Mix

Homemade onion soup mix will almost always contain the following:

  • onion flakes
  • beef bouillon granules
  • onion powder
  • paprika
  • garlic powder

I like to add black pepper to my homemade onion soup mix. With pepper, it’s important to make sure it’s finely ground. If it has big granules, it will not mix into the seasoning well!

  1. I love the idea of making this in place of the store bought which is loaded with MSG. Thank you! I make French onion soup all the time. 1 32oz box low sodium beef stock, 1 packet onion soup mix OR 5 tbs homemade onion soup mix, 1 C water, 5 Vidalia onions sliced and 2 tbs Worcestershire sauce.
Carmelize your onions then add all ingredients and simmer 1 hour. So delicious

    1. While I have only tried this recipe as written, you could certainly try this with a vegetarian bouillon powder or soup base substitute. I can’t say for sure how it would change the flavor.

  2. thanks for all the yummy recipes! I have a question that maybe you could answer, do you know of a bullion that does not have yeast extract in it? My hubby and son are allergic to yeast and the yeast extract is enough to really make them sick! Thanks

    1. Watkins Beef Soup and Gravy Base, which I found on Amazon, is completely yeast free, as another person with a yeast allergy, I’m certain (unless they’re hiding anything). I even run a yeast-free food blog and wrote a cookbook (that isn’t published, sadly), so I’m very up on all the things with yeast.

  3. HI Molly, Thanks for this recipe! Glad I came across it. I usually buy the package and sift out the onions because my girls hate them!

  4. This is absolutely amazing! Just like the “real thing” and perfect for my daughter with Celiac. I use it for dip, meatloaf, and roasted potatoes!

  5. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I love this on roasted veggies, but I prefer not to purchase the stuff in the packet.

    Pinning!

  6. I really like the fact that I can control the sodium content. Prepackaged onion soup mix is far too salty for my tastes.

  7. That is delicious, I will try it for myself, thanks for sharing with Hearth and soul blog hop, pinning and tweeting.

  8. I love homemade mixes your Onion Soup Mix looks great! Thanks so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday and have a wonderful week.

  10. I love this! Being able to make your own as needed or store it for later use is perfect! I love that it will keep for 6 months. Thanks so much for sharing this keeper!!
