Chocolate Banana Cake is the perfect dessert for when you are short on time but need a yummy dessert. The addition of bananas to this recipe makes a box mix chocolate cake into a deliciously moist and decadent treat!
When the urge for an easy decadent dessert hits, this Chocolate Banana Cake is perfect for a quick and easy treat. It won’t last for long because everyone will want to have a second slice!
I absolutely love bananas in baking including banana bread, banana cake and my absolute favorite chocolate chip banana bread!
While I do love a good Chocolate Cake From Scratch, sometimes I just want to get something put together quickly and easily. This chocolate banana cake fits the bill perfectly!
This recipe starts with a boxed chocolate cake mix and once mixed, the ripe mashed bananas and chocolate chips are mixed in. If your banana peels have little brown flecks, they are ripe and ready to use! While this cake does have 3 bananas added, they don’t add a ton of banana flavor to the mixture but what they do add is tons of moisture making this cake taste decadent and homemade. (In fact there are lots of great ways to make a box cake mix taste homemade!
I love to use either my One Minute Easy Chocolate Frosting a good Chocolate Buttercream Frosting to top this (or even store bought if you prefer). If you don’t have chocolate frosting on hand, whipped cream or whipped topping is great too!
This cake will stay moist for days (although it never lasts that long around here) but it also freezes very well if you’d like to make it ahead of time. Simply prepare as directed, cool completely and then cover well and freeze.
This really is a deliciously moist cake that requires very few ingredients. For a fun and easy twist, you can use any flavor cake mix in this recipe with great results including yellow cake or spice cake with chopped nuts in place of the chocolate chips (and top it with homemade Cream Cheese Frosting). The possibilities with the basic recipe are endless.

Made this cake with the following additions: 1 tsp vanilla and 2 tsp cinnamon. Frosted it with my favorite quick chocolate frosting from the back of the Hersheys cocoa box. Absolute heaven!
I have to bake this it looks so good
Trying the Banana Chocolate Cake with some leftover bananas. Good and easy recipe for a scorcher of a day in Cali.
What kind of cake mix do you prefer to use? One with pudding in the mix or without?
I use the one without pudding but I think either would work just fine.
I’m assuming this cake is quiet heavy. I was think about try banana pudding and a small amount of banana liquor with the box cake.
I find it light and moist. Let us know how your cake turns out!
Yummy
Could you add more bananas???
Susan,
I have only written this recipe as written.
I love to have that
I hope you get a chance to try the recipe Sarah!
This was sooo yummy and moist and homemade-tasting. I topped it with peanut butter frosting. Thanks!

Yes, updated. Thanks Lyn!
Such a wonderfully delicious cake! Thank you for sharing!

Recipe for frosting?
This is my favorite Chocolate frosting, it’s easy and always perfect!
Made this recipe as it calls for did not turn out. It should not be one cup of water.
One cup of water is correct for this recipe. I”ve made it several times with great results. The bananas add additional moisture.
If I don’t like bananas but like the flavor, would it work if I mashed a/few bananas & mixed it with the cake batter instead of banana slices?
The bananas are mashed in this cake.
Do you recommend refrigeration if made the day before an event? Also would you wait to put icing on the day of the event?
I just leave it covered at room temperature. You can frost the day before if you’d like too.
Will any chocolate cake mix work? What kind of choc chips in cake? Milk choc?
Yes, whatever you prefer will work fine in terms of the cake and chocolate chips!
So semi sweet chocolate chips will work?
Yes, they’ll work perfectly!
Absolutely delicious. Its so moist, light and fluffy. There wasn’t even a crumb left behind. The only thing I did differently was instead of water I used milk.
So glad you loved it Lisa!
Which type of frosting do you suggest is best for this cake??
My two favorites are either Chocolate Ganache Frosting or 1 Minute Frosting.
I meant ‘bundt’ pan
I haven’t tried this in a bundt pan however, it is a very soft cake so I’m not sure how would work.
Hi Holly! Just love all your recipes! About to give the Chocolate Banana Cake a go and just wondering, didn’t see this question asked anywhere. Any CHANCE I could make these as cupcakes instead of a cake? Maybe I’ll hold off a daynor two to see your answer. Thanks!
Thank you so much Debra, I haven’t tried it but I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work. Let us know how it goes!
We made them into cupcakes (I called them muffins since we didn’t frost them) and they were absolutely delicious and so easy! They baked for about 20 minutes in the muffin tin.
Can I bake this in a Bundy pan?
This looks sooo good. I don’t like a strong banana flavor usually…does this have one?
It doesn’t have a strong banana flavor at all, it just adds a really great texture.
