This Ranch Dip Is The Best Because…

  • It has the best fresh flavor and uses ingredients you likely have.
  • Ranch dip could not be easier to make! Mix everything in one bowl and chill until ready to use.
  • Skip the Hidden Valley Ranch packet—homemade ranch dip is gluten-free and has no preservatives or artificial colors.
  • Make a double batch because you’ll want to use it for everything! Homemade Ranch Dip adds zest to fresh vegetables, burgers, pizza crust, and crunchy snacks.

Ingredients For Ranch Dip

  • Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise makes the base rich and creamy.
  • Sour cream: Sour cream adds tang and lightens this ranch dip. I often replace it with Greek yogurt.
  • Herbs: I prefer fresh herbs if possible, but you can use dried herbs in this recipe. If using dried herbs, let the dressing chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Variations

  • Add a bit of buttermilk powder for extra tang and creaminess without thinning the dip. It can be found in the dried milk section of the supermarket or ordered online here.
  • Add a grated dill pickle or diced jalapeno.
  • Stir in some finely shredded cheddar cheese or crumbled blue cheese.

Ways to Use Ranch Dip

Use ranch dip for all kinds of dipping and dunking!

  • It’s perfect for a raw veggie platter-carrots, cucumber, celery, bell pepper, and tomatoes!
  • Homemade ranch dip is perfect for potato chips, fries, tots, chicken wings, and more.
  • Enjoy it as a sauce for grilled chicken or wraps – or even pasta salad.

Storage

Store ranch dip in a plastic airtight container or a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to a week. I don’t recommend freezing it because the dairy ingredients make the thawed dip grainy.

      1. I have now made this recipe twice. It’s truly delicious! Getting fresh chives in my part of the world is tricky at the moment, so I did substitute dried chives and used fresh parsley and dill. One of these days I’ll give it a try with all dried herbs. However, never again will I purchase commercial ranch dressing or dip. Never. Thanks so much, Holly.5 stars

      2. That’s great! It’s easy and so delicious Ruthielil. It’ll be good with dried herbs too. Enjoy!

  1. Very disappointing. I reduced the buttermilk as instructed, but it came out really liquidy. I would leave the buttermilk out entirely to get something resembling a dip consistency.

    1. The buttermilk adds a nice tangy flavor. Did you use light or low fat products? If you’d like to thicken up the batch you’ve already made, you can add a little bit extra sour cream and mayonnaise.

    1. I got the little jar at H&M several years ago, it’s one of my favorites. Sadly, I don’t think they have them anymore.

  2. I like to add a few shakes of Worcestershire sauce and a little El Yucateco chipotle hot sauce and also cut the dill weed in half. Yummy.

  3. you can freeze the leftover buttermilk. in fact freeze it in one cup containers and then you will have enough for 3 more recipes.

    1. I have used a buttermilk substitute in baking, but never in this dressing recipe. Take a 1 cup measuring cup, and add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to the cup. Fill it to the top with milk. Stir and let sit 5 minutes. The result is thick and tangy…

I cannot guarantee this will work in this recipe as I have never tried it. If you do try it, I’d love to hear how it works for you!

      1. I’ve used buttermilk substitute in this recipe and it’s still delicious!
Also, I use this dressing on your rainbow broccoli salad instead of the one in that recipe. The whole family LOVES it!5 stars

  7. This looks really tasty, and I’d like to try it. I do have one question, though. The instructions refer to buttermilk, but there is no buttermilk in the recipe. Am I missing something? Thanks!

  8. i just love when i can whip something up easy and taste so yummy, and loving this, always looking for great ideas and Thanks for another one ;)

Thank yo uso much for sharing it!

  10. My daughter loves ranch dressing. Now I can make it homemade for her. Already pinned to keep. Thanks for sharing.

      1. No it can’t. The high heat would cause separation and you would just have a watery mess.
