Homemade Pancakes are pretty much the perfect weekend food.
Simple and quick… and perfectly fluffy. Stacked tall with cold butter and real maple syrup (and crispy bacon). It’s almost the only reason to get out of bed on a Saturday!
How to Make Pancake Mix for Homemade Pancakes
Homemade Pancakes don’t take many ingredients. You’ll simply take some dry ingredients and combine them with butter, eggs and milk… voila, pancakes.
Making a homemade pancake mix just means keeping the right ratios of dry ingredients ready to go. You’ll simply scoop some mix, add some wet ingredients and you’re on your way to fluffy pancake perfection in minutes.
Buying and preparing all of your own foods is the single easiest way to ensure that you know exactly what your family is eating. It is also a great way to save money on groceries! Most pre-made baking mixes are typically simply mixtures of very simple, common dry baking ingredients. You can make your own cake, bread and other mixes and get delicious and cheap baked goods but, today, let’s discuss pancake mixes. This homemade pancake mix is easy to whip up and is a great way to save on the budget.
What Makes Pancakes Fluffy?
To make sure your homemade pancakes are perfectly fluffy here are a few of my fave tips:
- Use fresh ingredients – Believe it or not, old ingredients can make your pancakes fall flat (especially baking powder).
- Do not overmix – A few lumps are not only ok, they’re required!
- Grease your pan with oil – You’ll want a well-greased pan and butter can burn.
- Flip when bubbles pop – as soon as the bubbles pop, you ‘ll want to flip your pancakes.
Get ready to make healthier, more budget-friendly pancakes that your kids and the whole family will love! The best part is that once you have this homemade pancake mix in the cupboard, these are on the table in just a few minutes! Breakfast for dinner anyone?
Ta da! Totally homemade, delicious and healthy pancakes! You will save money and feel really good about what you are feeding your family. The more you control what goes into your foods, the healthier and happier you (and your wallet) will be.

Love this simple recipe. I can doctor it up with some of my favorite flavors for pancakes (peanut butter, cinnamon, brown sugar, bananas) and fry them in a tub of butter
3 tbsps of baking powder for real?
Hi Effe, this recipe is correct as written. Enjoy!
Nothing like going through about a 45 minute conversation before finally actually getting to the point .

GrumpyBob, you mispronounced “Thank you for the FREE recipe”!
any sugar recommendations?
I have only tried the recipe as written Esbone so I can’t say for sure.
These were absolutely amazing. Approved and loved by 5 teenage kids. As well as 2 parents. A Sunday go to from now on.
Are you able to omit or decrease the salt in this pancake mix for someome on a sodium restricted diet?
You can leave the salt out.
I make this all the time. I have shared it to extended family and friends. I add 1/4 cup sugar instead of the 3 Tablespoons to the mix and cut milk to 3/4 cup when I make them. Everyone raves about them. Puts purchased mixes to shame. Problem is you won’t enjoy store bought mixes anymore.
Thank you for sharing your recipe!
I made these this morning and I have to say the far exceeded my expectations.
Got the fluffiest pancakes ever!
Don’t know how to attach a picture or I’d show how beautifully they turned out.
So glad to have found your site. Made your coconut cream pie and left a comment on how wonderful it was.
Can’t wait to see what else I can try…..lol
I am so glad you loved this recipe Kathy! If you are on Instagram, you can post a photo there and tag us at @spendpennies so we can see your photo!
Nice and fluffy. I make a double batch so I always have some mix ready.
I’m so glad I found this recipe. I add vanilla to my wet ingredients. I like pancakes for breakfast, lunch or dinner and now that I have the dry mix on hand, I may have them whenever I want to. The recipe was very easy to put together and into an airtight container. I also make extra to have during the week for breakfast. Just fryem up, put in a plastic bag, pop in the fridge or freezer. To reheat, pop in toaster, toaster oven or microwave. Delicious and money saving
Excellent recipe!
Makes amazing pancakes!!
This is my favorite one! I add flax meal because I don’t eat eggs.
Thank you! Could buttermilk be used in place of milk?
That should work well!
I told my husband that I wanted to make pancakes. I told him I can make homemade pancake mix, instead of buying it. He argued that pancake mix isn’t that expensive, and that he likes the store bought mix. We kept going back and forth. He said why don’t you make some right now. So I did I followed the recipe exactly. I used two cups of pancake mix and made the batter. I told him to cook them. He cooked them and said that those be were the best pancake he had ever had. I now have a jar of the mix in my pantry for the next time we want pancakes. Delicious!!!
Thank you for the recipe for great pancake mix! We love it! Makes 4 good size pancakes for my husband and myself.
You’re welcome Holly!
This recipe makes perfect pancakes for cheap. And I love not starting from scratch in tue morning
Delicious! Family loved them….. thank you for sharing
We love this and keep the mix in our pantry regularly for weekend pancakes! I was wondering how I could adjust the recipe to use the mix for waffles. Thank you!
Hi Megan, we actually have a great waffle recipe that you can use with all the adjustments! Just prep the dry ingredients ahead of time and add the wet ingredients when ready to cook.
Pancake mix tastes delicious but like the poster above, I really want to convert it to waffle mix sometimes too. I did pull up your waffle recipe but instead of making a different bag of dry ingredients I was wondering if I just add the waffle wet ingredients if it would make waffles? how many cups of pancake mix to use for the waffle dry ingredients?
I have not tried it that way Kaitlyn so I can’t say for sure. The pancake dry ingredients has more leavening agent so they’re not exactly the same.
