2 Ingredient Apple Pie Dumplings collage with the pan of dumplings and some on the plate

Apple Pie Dumplings made with just two easy ingredients!  Simply add them to a baking dish and cook until tender and lightly browned.  Serve these dumplings warm out of the oven with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.

Apple Pie Dumplings on a plate

This has to be the easiest dessert EVER, you’re just two ingredients away from an amazing dessert!  My 10 year old probably would’ve eaten the whole recipe had I let her (trust me, she asked)!

When purchasing canned apple pie filling, I highly recommend buying a good quality brand.  It may cost a few pennies extra, but this is the one place I think it’s worth it!  I’ve found most store brand pie fillings taste pretty close the the name brands…  except apple. The store brand apple pie fillings never seem to taste the same to me!

If you prefer, you can certainly use a quick homemade apple pie filling which only takes a few minutes to make! While this recipe calls for just one can of filling, adding two works great if you like more apples in your dessert (and increases the servings from 4 to 6).

Because our store doesn’t carry the apple pie filling with cinnamon, I like to add a dash of cinnamon.  Of course this takes the recipe from  2 ingredients to 3 but it also adds a lot of extra flavor! Feel free to get creative and toss in some pecans, walnuts, raisins, coconut or whatever you happen to have on hand!

You’ll want to ensure your apple/crescent mixture is spread out in a dish (mine was 2qt.).  After 15  minutes I flip the crescents over, you don’t have to but it gives a more even cook and makes sure everything is all spread out.

I personally top mine with ice cream (or whipped cream if it’s all I have on hand) but my husband LOVES to top his with heavy cream and a drizzle of caramel.

This recipe has been one of my top and most loved recipes forever!  I’ve made this countless times, always with great results. It’s amazing that combining Apple Pie filling and crescent rolls can create such a delicious dessert!

Find quick and easy stove top homemade apple pie filling recipe here!  This easy recipe is made on the stove top and makes the equivalent of one store bought can of pie filling!

Note:  The baking time on this recipe can vary.  Mine always takes 25 minutes but depending on the dish you use, you may need to add a few minutes to your bake time.  Be sure that your dough is on top of the apples and somewhat spread out.  This will also work with rolls of biscuit dough.

  1. I made this using 1 can of peach pie filling and 1/2 can of blueberry pie filling and it was delicious! It did take longer for the crescent dumplings to bake but it was worth the wait!

    1. Nowhere did I find the oven temp. 350? 400? It sounds as tho a squeeze of lemon juice might help it for those who think it will be too sweet, but ‘too sweet’ is what dessert’s all about, isn’t it??? Just have less!

  2. This looks delicious! My family loves apple pie and cobbler and I am hoping this will be about the same. Not everyones taste is the same…ignore the negative and keep giving good recipes!!

  3. This is so easy and even better! Muy guy requested it two night in a row… So good over vanilla bean ice cream!

  4. I made this and it was super easy but I did have some tips. Directions say to mix the filing and crescent roll dough together but I found the dough that was mixed Into the filling would not cook. The dough set on the top cooked fine. I cooked for over 45 minutes without the dough inside getting remotely cooked. I ended up pulling them out and putting on top but at that point the original dough in top was well done and it left the dough getting cooked unevenly with some being perfect(those moved on top last) and the rest very well done. An easy fix but it almost tripled the cooking time. Next time I’ll know better.
Once out of the oven I recommend putting butter on the rolls and sprinkling just a little sugar on them.

    1. Thank you for sharing your tips Tara! Mine didn’t take that long but ovens can definitely vary! I love the idea of butter & sugar on top! :)

    2. I also had the same problem. The rolls wouldn’t cook, they were browning on top but raw underneath. I flipped several times and it took way longer than expected. The end result was good. Since I have medicine to take once a week, (can’t lay down for 30 minutes after taking and can’t eat for 1 hour), I made them for a Sunday breakfast. I will make again but next time I know to start earlier.

  5. fixing to try the only problem when I took them out of oven severs pieces the dough didn’t cook through they were wet & gooy raw so flipped & cooking longer

    1. Mine took closer to 25 minutes.. if yours aren’t cooked through then definitely flipping them and cooking a bit longer is a great idea!

  6. Hi Holly, thanks.. this looks great, I don’t have the time to make stuff like this from scratch so this is awesome, don’t take to heart a couple of the negative comments, you can’t please everyone. It’s quick and easy and it’s something you can make in a pinch with stuff you have in the fridge and pantry. I love the idea, keep them coming please.

  7. Just made this recipe with WalMart frozen buttermilk biscuits! Cut each biscuits into fourths and baked a little longer than the recipe stated. Seriously yummy! Turns out more the dumplings in cobbler. Thanks for the recipe.

  8. this is sure to be a hit with our grandchildren! I invite you to share at the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop ( every Thursday or you can link up today until midnight) Hugs!

  9. Congratulations!
Your Recipe is featured on Full Plate Thursday this week. Hope you enjoy your weekend and your new Red Plate!

    1. I would think real apples would work but I haven’t tried it that way. You may like to add some of the same ingredients you use in apple pie (including something to thicken them so they don’t get runny).

  10. THANK YOU for the amazing quick and easy recipe!! Please come again soon to the Wonderful Wed. Blog Hop and bring more amazing recipes please. Carrie, A Mother’s Shadow

  11. I resend my comment of August 9, 2014. It was based on the teaspoon I sampled when it first came out of the oven. My husband said it tasted nasty and wouldn’t eat it. Also, using Comstock apple pie filling, it is way too sweet and tastes like Pillsbury bread dough–nothing homemade tasting or pastry about it. Save your time, money and ingredients! This is not good!

    1. So you tried a recipe that wasn’t to your or your family’s liking, why such negativity? Taste buds & flavor palettes are like a person’s looks – subjective especially depending on how educated the palette is but I have to say, certainly you knew your families’ tastes before making this easy recipe and I say tasty recipe. Some people just like the drama which is sad but if you were an experienced cook or knew what your family liked, I am sure you have used canned pie filling before and knew you could modify that with fresh fruit or flavoring or even a fresh fruit thickened with sugar, flour, cornstarch or any homemade pie filling recipe from fresh fruit and not liking crescent roll dough, then easy few ingredients to make your own dough, roll it out, ball it up and follow the instructions from that point. So why would you make a recipe disliking ALL 2 ingredients?? Both common ingredients that I am sure you have tasted before. Really? Or was it just to post (to quote your hubby’s elaborate vocabulary) a ‘nasty’ review? SMH and rolling my eyes. Do yourself and all of us a favor and don’t follow the site or try any of these recipes!!! A recipe is a guide (hello common sense)….and substitutions of like/similar ingredients and enhancements are part of making a recipe our own based on our personal tastes, likes and dislikes….I love this basic starter and added my own touches, still quick and easy and delish!!!

  13. This is great to make in a pinch. I love apple pie and I love dumplings so win-win!
