I almost always have a big jar of homemade brownie mix on hand and when I whip them up, this is my go to topping! In fact, I’ve made this recipe a million times and used it to top everything from homemade chocolate poke cake to zucchini brownies.

This frosting sets very quickly, and when I say it really comes together in a flash, I’m not joking… ONE minute!! I use semi-sweet chocolate in this recipe, if you prefer a darker fudgy chocolate frosting, feel free to use dark chocolate instead!

While this frosting is incredibly easy to make, please make sure that you have cake/brownies completely cooled and ready to go before pouring it onto your cake/brownies! If adding toppings like sprinkles/m&ms they must be added immediately or they will not adhere to the frosting.  You can really dress this up with anything and everything including nuts, candies, and sprinkles.

Another great perk of this easy chocolate frosting is that the process of spreading couldn’t be easier! Simply tilt pan to “spread” around immediately after pouring.

If you have a little more time, try our Easy Chocolate Frosting recipe! So chocolatey, so decadent, and it pairs perfectly with cake, cupcakes, or even strawberries!

  1. hi, some people are saying that this recipe sucks while others say its awesome. does anyone reccomend this?

  2. Super quick and easy and turned out exactly like my grandma’s chocolate icing, which is what I was expecting.5 stars

  3. Love this recipe! The first time I made it my husband said it reminded him of the Cooked icing he grew up with. I have made it several times and love the simplicity of it. It is a nice change from a butter cream frosting. Thanks so much for the recipe.5 stars

  4. Oh my this was the worst receipt ever, it was like pouring soup on top of my brownies, I ended up throwing them in the garbage yuk!

  5. Thanks for sharing this recipe. I’m about to start making a cake for my son’s birthday tomorrow, so I’m going to give it a try. My only fear is that it will be too sweet. Will the frosting still work out (as in texture) if I skip the sugar altogether and just use the chocolate for sweetness? (I made a cake last year that was super sweet and no one liked it, so I’m trying to redeem myself this year lol)

I’d greatly appreciate your quick response if you have a min!

    Thanks again,
    Sarah

    1. I’ve only tried this recipe as written. The sugar does boil which helps with consistency.

  6. This is my all time favorite frosting recipe, and I use it all the time on Texas sheet cakes. I love to put the frosted cake in the fridge, so that the frosting turns to fudge. So good! I made my daughter lemon Texas sheet cake cupcakes with white chocolate frosting yesterday, and they are the best cupcakes I’ve ever made, largely in part to the white chocolate frosting I made, by substituting white chocolate melts for the semi sweet chocolate chips in this recipe. A-MAZ-ING! Make this recipe, you won’t be disappointed.5 stars

  7. Does the 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chip ingredient in the recipe have to be mixed in a blender till it becomes a course mix before whisking it with the vanilla into the rest of the ingredients? The recipe is unclear on this point. Thank you for a response.

  8. So tasty. I have to pour it while the cake was still cooling because I started making it too quickly. Plus the kids and husband were eager to eat dessert! I will attempt again once cake is cooked. But it is still very tasty!

  9. Trash recipe, you need to specify white sugar not just ”sugar” used icing sugar for this icing and it didn’t turn out.

    1. Hi Nolan, sorry this recipe didn’t work out for you. We use granulated sugar in this recipe but other readers have made with powdered sugar and have had good results as well.

  10. Why oh why have I been buying frosting when this is SO good, SO easy, and SOOO much better for us! Thanks so much!! It surely was a hit!!

  11. Hi! I am going to make this right now, but I am confused on how this will set. Do I have to pour it over the cake that’s in its baking pan or do you pour it over the cake out of the baking pan? I hope you respond soon, I’d greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

  12. Came out beautifully! I went a few second too long bc I had read other reviews about the icing not setting, but I will do it for the 45 seconds next time! It’s very sweet, so I just shortened up the sugar in my cake so it wouldn’t be overly rich … very tasty! Big hit w friends!5 stars

  13. This was a fine glaze, but I would not call it frosting. So it ended up being quite a mess on the cake I was making.2 stars

    1. This is the frosting recipe my dear Mom passed down to me, although the amounts were a little different. I remember sitting down and stirring for a good five minutes while the mixture cooled and firmed up. It is such a yummy topping to the chocolate cake recipe on the back of the Hershey’s cocoa can (if it’s still on there). Brings back wonderful memories! Thank you, Holly!

      1. So happy this recipe brought back such sweet memories. Thanks for sharing Paula!

  14. Hi. I need to make frosting for brownies but I have edible sugar pictures that need to go on afterwards. I’m afraid to put them on the brownies right after they are as the may melt because the frosting is hot/ warm. How long can I wait to put them on?

    1. I haven’t worked with edible sugar pictures so I can’t say for sure. I would wait until the frosting completely sets and cools. I’d suggest trying one to make sure it’s ready before adding them all.
