Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole is a sweet and savory side dish made with pumpkin pie spice and topped with crunchy pecans. This fresh and easy twist on a classic sweet potato casserole will wow any crowd! 

Great as a Thanksgiving side dish, serve alongside other classic sides like stuffing, mashed potatoes, and a green bean casserole!

To Prepare Sweet Potatoes & Apples

This recipe has two stars: sweet potatoes and apples! While this dish is so easy to prepare it does require a little prep work.

The sweet potatoes get a head start in cooking by boiling so they cook at the same rate as the apples.

  • Sweet Potatoes: Peel before using them; the outside skin won’t cook well in this recipe (although I do eat it when I make baked sweet potatoes). Cut into uniform pieces so they all cook at the same rate.  Be sure not to over boil them since they will continue to cook in the oven. So keep an eye on them!
  • Apples: You can use any kind of apple for this recipe, I prefer a Granny smith (the same as I use in apple pie) because it holds its shape well and the tart flavor pairs well with the sweetness of the potatoes. Like the potatoes, be sure to peel the apples and cut into cubes!

To Make Sweet Potato Apple Casserole

Once the prep work is done this casserole is so easy to assemble.

  1. Boil sweet potatoes until barely softened and drain. Do not overcook.
  2. Combine sweet potatoes and apples in the casserole dish. Stir in the buttery brown sugar mixture.
  3. Bake, top with the pecans (walnuts optional). Bake another 5 minutes to toast the pecans.

What to Serve With It

This casserole is a perfect side, especially around the holidays! So, it is a natural fit with roast turkey, chicken and even pork!

To Make Ahead: Prepare casserole as directed and cover tightly before baking. Refrigerate up to 48 hours. Remove from the fridge at least 30 minutes before baking. Bake as directed.

Reheating the Leftovers

Simply reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave! Give it a thorough stir and refresh with a little extra pumpkin pie spice to brighten the flavors again! It will be good as new!

Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole

This easy casserole is the perfect combination of sweet and savory. Great for the holidays!

  • 4 sweet potatoes (approx 2 ½ pounds) peeled and cut into 1-inch dice
  • 4 small apples (or 3 large), peeled, cored and diced into 1-inch pieces
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • ¼ cup pecans chopped
  • salt to taste


  • Add the potatoes to a large pot and cover with water.
  • Bring to a boil over high heat and cook until the potatoes are just starting to soften. You don’t want them to cook until soft because they will continue to cook during the baking process.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F and spray a 9x13" casserole dish with non-stick spray.
  • Drain the potatoes and place them into the prepared baking dish.
  • Add the apples to the casserole dish.
  • In a small bowl mix together the melted butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, and pumpkin pie spice.
  • Pour mixture over the apples and potatoes and stir to combine.
  • Add to the oven and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and top with pecans.
  • Add back to the oven and cook for 5 minutes more to toast the pecans.


Root Vegetables: Sweet potatoes can be replace by or combined with other root vegetables such as turnips or parsnips.

  1. Approximately how many cups of the cubed sweet potatoes should there be. Also about how long does it take to parboil the potatoes. Thanks in advance! Making for the first time this Thanksgiving.

    1. You will need approximately 2 2/3 cups of diced sweet potatoes. How long it will take to parboil the sweet potatoes will depend on the exact size of your dice, but I would check them at about 5 minutes and every couple minutes after and expect them to take about 10 minutes. I hope this helps!

  3. I love most of the recipes I have from you and this is no exception. I need to adjust this next time as my husband and I are both diabetic and there is a lot of sugar.
    I wrote here because of the Homemade pumpkin pie spice. I just bought all of the spices I needed to make my own. We don’t have it pumpkin pie spice, or canned pumpkin here in Sweden. At night when I am achy and cold or just when I need comfort I heat a cup of milk, add some shakes of the spice mix and sweeten to taste. Stir it so it is mixed in and sit down with a warm comforting taste and smell and sip before going to bed.5 stars

  5. I made this to go with our Christmas turkey dinner. Excellent recipe! Thank you! I liked the textures and much prefer it over mashed yam casseroles. Do you think a bit of cornstarch could be mixed in with the brown sugar, maple syrup and spices to thicken the tasty sauce?5 stars

      1. I agree this needs to be thicker. I took this to a family gathering and the juice leaked from my casserole and made a huge mess. I had no idea it was so liquidy and didn’t have it in a deep enough dish. Either cooking the sauce ahead like a candy (I thought I missed a step in the directions)!or maybe adding cornstarch idk?2 stars

  6. My twin brother brought this & two more of your recipes (all 3 were good!) to make with Christmas dinner last night. Unfortunately, my sweet bro had no idea how long the prep & precooking of the potatoes would take. Thankfully I looked at his recipes & knew what we were in for if I didn’t get started on the prep . Of course, we busted his chops about this
    Nothing about the recipe was difficult or complicated. Yes, there is a bit of prep (& parboiling the potatoes), but it’s easy enough to do & assemble. This recipe is delicious & all 8 of us loved it. I’ve pinned it, and I’ll also bookmark it so we can have it again in the future. I also love that it can be put together ahead of time, then finished in the oven later, esp at the holidays.

    1. I assemble and cover. If you’re concerned about browning, you can certainly add a little bit of lemon juice to the apples before tossing it all together.

  8. I have some coming for Thanksgiving dinner who are diabetic. Can this recipe be made with Splenda brown sugar and sugar free maple syrup? Would the measurements be the same as with regular brown sugar and maple syrup?

    1. Hi Beverly, it looks like when using Splenda brown sugar you would only use half of the amount called for to get the same amount of sweetness. Maple Syrup would be the same amount.

  9. I made this for New Year’s Day family meal and it was a huge hit! Sooo good! I didn’t have pumpkin pie spice so just subbed cinnamon and it was delicious all the same. It’s a good change from the traditional sweet potato casserole with marshmallows. A little more sophisticated and the apples are a perfect pairing. We’ll definitely be making this again!5 stars

  10. Can you bake this a day ahead and reheat in the microwave when needed? No room or time to bake this along with the turkey tomorrow. :)

    1. I think that should work just fine! I would suggest toasting the pecans ahead of time and setting them aside. Microwave until heated and then sprinkle on top just before serving. Happy Thanksgiving!

  11. Oh My Goodness! This recipe was absolutely wonderful! The maple syrup, pumpkin pie seasoning and the pecans put it way over the top! I made it for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner and everyone absolutely loved it and requested it now always be a part of our Thanksgiving dinner, And it will be!
