Everyone needs a classic Apple Crisp recipe in their collection!
Apple slices are tossed in cinnamon sugar and baked under a crispy brown sugar oatmeal topping with optional nuts or coconut.

Ingredient Tips for Apple Crisp
- Apples: Any apples (or a combination of) will work, but Granny Smith apples are my preference. I like that they have a tart flavor and hold their shape without becoming mushy. If you choose a different variety, the cooking time may vary so check the apples early.
- Oats: Use rolled oats which are also sometimes called large flake oats for the best texture. Quick oats can be used but the texture will change slightly.
- Flour: A bit of flour with the apples thickens the juices.
- Sugar: This recipe uses both white and brown sugar for a perfect flavor.
- Butter: Use unsalted butter. If using salted, omit salt from the topping.
- Nuts: I love the flavor either nuts or coconut add to the topping once it gets toasty. You can use any type of chopped nuts.

How to Make Apple Crisp
- Prepare crisp topping according to the recipe below.
- Toss peeled and sliced apples with sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
- Arrange the apples in a baking dish and sprinkle with the topping.
- Bake until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
Cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Storing Apple Crisp
- Keep leftover apple crisp covered at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Enjoy it cold or reheat portions in the microwave.
- Freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 4 months and let them thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

Apple Crisp Recipe
Ingredients
Topping
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
- ½ cup brown sugar packed
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¾ cup rolled oats
- ½ cup finely chopped pecans or coconut, or walnuts, optional
- ⅛ teaspoon salt optional
Apples
- 6 cups sliced Granny smith apples peeled and cored, sliced ¼-inch thick
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- In a medium bowl, combine the butter, brown sugar, ¼ cup flour, and cinnamon. Mix with a fork or pastry blender until the mixture sticks together and forms pea-sized crumbs. Stir in the oats and pecans or coconut (if using).
- In a large bowl toss the sliced apples with sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
- Place the apples in a 9×9 or 2qt baking dish and sprinkle with the oat topping.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden and the apples are tender. Cool 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Granny Smith apples are firm and tart, making an ideal choice for this dessert, but you can use any other firm apple variety. Softer varieties can work but and also become mushy so check them early.
- This recipe can be made ahead and refrigerated or frozen. To prep apples ahead of time, toss with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to prevent browning. Add a few minutes of baking if the crisp goes straight into the oven from the refrigerator. If frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator before baking.
- The topping can be frozen for future crisps and sprinkled onto fruit fillings straight from the freezer.
- Leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Very simple and tasty! Lovely dessert with fresh fall apples! Added a bit of salt into the crumble and used coconut oil and GF flour and it turned out perfect! Thanks for sharing your simple yet delicious recipes
As always good ,did my weird mixture of apples that I had, this and the cobbler I made were, just really good.when hubby approves ,it’s a winner.
So happy you enjoyed it, Denise!
Used this recipe for Apple Crisp for the first time today; followed precisely, with a mix of Granny Smith apples and Fuji. These two apples gave a nice contrast of sweet and tart. My son arrived home for a visit and enjoyed a dish, saying that it was one of the best apple crisps I had made. This will be my go-to apple crisp! 10/10
Wow! This is perfection!!! I’ve tried many recipes that were always way too sweet. This on is perfection. Thank you so much! We made ours gluten free. Super easy and soooo yummy!
This is the best apple crisp recipe. I don’t need any other one. The only thing I did differently was not adding coconut or nuts, and I used coconut sugar. I made this yesterday and it’s all gone. Everyone loved it! I will make this often. Thank you for such a yummy and easy recipe!
I bake my apple crisp for about 15 min without the topping then add the topping and finish baking. I find the topping stays crisper that way.
I love this recipe very much. Thanks for posting.
Haven’t made your recipe yet, but am wanting to try it this weekend for a family gathering….a la mode, of course!!
QUESTION???——the size of baking dish is not mentioned( unless I missed it ) but In looking at pictures, it seems to be a smaller dish….8 in. by 8 in. perhaps?
Lemeno!!
Hi Melissa, we use an 8×8 or 2qt baking dish for this recipe. Enjoy!
I had a bunch of apples that needed to be used up and this recipe did not disappoint. The shredded coconut should not be optional! It was such a delicious addition! SWP Employee
The apple crisp just came out of the oven and smells so amazing! Can’t wait to dig in! Made mine with gluten free flour and oats and you wouldn’t even know (I have already started sampling ). SWP Employee

I love your recipes.
Thank you for directly answering the question about freezing! I didn’t know if the an entire homemade uneaten crisp could be frozen, I’ve only portioned out single servings (so I don’t eat the entire thing!). What is the best way to wrap my crisps to freeze? I just need to freeze for one week. Thanks!
Freeze in an airtight container, or wrap tightly in plastic wrap Miss Rochelle. Enjoy!
Just made this with apples off our friends tree! Soo delicious. Substituted the flour for a gluten free flour and it turned out perfectly. SWP Employee
