I almost always have a big jar of homemade brownie mix on hand and when I whip them up, this is my go to topping! In fact, I’ve made this recipe a million times and used it to top everything from homemade chocolate poke cake to zucchini brownies.

This frosting sets very quickly, and when I say it really comes together in a flash, I’m not joking… ONE minute!! I use semi-sweet chocolate in this recipe, if you prefer a darker fudgy chocolate frosting, feel free to use dark chocolate instead!

While this frosting is incredibly easy to make, please make sure that you have cake/brownies completely cooled and ready to go before pouring it onto your cake/brownies! If adding toppings like sprinkles/m&ms they must be added immediately or they will not adhere to the frosting.  You can really dress this up with anything and everything including nuts, candies, and sprinkles.

Another great perk of this easy chocolate frosting is that the process of spreading couldn’t be easier! Simply tilt pan to “spread” around immediately after pouring.

If you have a little more time, try our Easy Chocolate Frosting recipe! So chocolatey, so decadent, and it pairs perfectly with cake, cupcakes, or even strawberries!

  1. I’m sure the recipe is great! Was just wondering before I attempt it, is the frosting pourable before it sets? Or do you have to spread it around the cake?5 stars

    1. This is a pourable frosting Devin. Please make sure that you have the cake/brownies completely cooled and ready to go before pouring it onto your cake/brownies! Simply tilt pan to “spread” around immediately after pouring. If adding toppings like sprinkles/m&ms they must be added immediately or they will not adhere to the frosting.

    1. I have only tried the recipe as written, but other readers have made the recipe with cocoa powder with success. Let us know if you try it Lyn!

  2. You rock! Your photos are gorgeous! They make me so hungry! And your recipes sound so delicious! Keep up the good work!

  3. This recipe is so easy and looks so professional on my cookie bars. So shiny and sets quickly. Love it! I used confectionery sugar instead of regular sugar and it still was excellent.5 stars

  4. Best icing EVER. I boiled for about a minute and the texture of the recipe wasn’t gritty at all! It was perfectly smooth. I doubled the recipe and poured over a two layer devil’s food cake. I had frosting left over, and it was hard not to eat it all. So fudgie and delicious and SO much better than butter cream. Everyone is right when they say you pour it over the cake. Make it. You will not regret it. I made this for a friend’s party and everyone RAVED about it. There were four other cakes there, and mine was the only one that disappeared.5 stars

  5. Hi. Could you please provide the equivalent measurements by weight in grams for dry ingredients and millilitres for liquids, for the convenience of those of us in the U.K./Europe? I find that weights give far more reproducible and accurate results every time than measuring by volume does.

  6. Five Stars on this one! I am a cake and cookie artist with my own business and I just used this on a customer’s Christmas themed cake. I used mint chocolate chips because the cake is mint chocolate. It was SO easy to work with. It was super quick and oh-so-yummy! It’s keeper of a recipe FOR SURE!! After the holidays when things slow down a bit in my kitchen, I plan to play around with this recipe with other flavors of chips. I’ll let you know how my experiments turn out. Thanks for posting this recipe! Btw, I’ve never disliked a single one of your recipes. They always ROCK!! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and may the new year bring many more recipe ideas to all of us from you!!5 stars

    1. That’s so great to hear Bridget! I’m glad it worked for your mint chocolate cake! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!

  7. I followed the directions exactly, but (and this has happened before) the name brand chocolated chips did not melt completely. I thought of putting it back on the stove, but I didn’t want to risk burning them. So I whisked and whisked until most of them were melted in and poured it on the cake. We’ll see how it is after dinner.3 stars

    1. I can’t say for certain why the chocolate chips didn’t melt, I have not had an issue with my chocolate chips in this recipe. Hopefully it still worked out ok for you!

      1. Not sure if this is what the problem was for you but I have learned the hard way (in other recipes) that milk chocolate chips do not melt like the semi sweet.

      2. Yes, my milk chocolate chips did not completely melt but it didn’t matter. I frosted my cupcakes with it anyway and they were fantastic!5 stars

  8. So, I am addicted to this… I don’t actually use it for frosting… I use it for fudge, decrease a bit of milk and just store it in the fridge. Need a chocolate fix? Grab a spoon and grab a bite, or sometimes I will cut it in squares after it has set and just grab out a square whenever… Healthy in NO WAY, but crazy delicious!!5 stars

  9. I found your recipe while searching for a quick chocolate frosting for the brownies I had just made.  I was so excited to find a 1 minute recipe.  I started gathering my ingredients and discovered I didn’t have a bag of chocolate chips but I did find peanut butter chips.  We all know chocolate and peanut butter are meant to be together.  Frosting turned out perfect and my husband loved the taste.  Thank you for this awesome recipe.5 stars

  10. Exactly as described—quick, delicious, and easy to pour/set. Thank you! I added chopped pecans as a topping to half of the cake and left the other plain to make the family happy. It looks great.5 stars

  11. This apparently has been on here for a while, but it is so good, I had to chime in too! Great, great frosting recipe. I’m 59 and it’s the best frosting recipe I have now. I’ve already used it several times.
If I could give it 6 stars, I would.
And yes, rating stars are not filling in.5 stars

  12. I can’t see if this is posting 5 stars, but that is what I intended. Great recipe. I cut in half for half a batch of cupcakes. Used half coconut sugar, came out really great! Thanks! 5 stars

  13. Unreal! Amazing, easy, delicious and fabulous chocolate frosting. Thank you so much for your recipe!!5 stars

  14. Great frosting! super easy and oh so delicious. I didn’t have chocolate chips so I substituted mint Hershey Kisses with excellent results.5 stars

  15. If you have left over frosting, place in container and freeze for later use. Just a light defrost in microwave and instant frosting.

  16. Thank you for sharing this easy and wonderful recipe. It is so easy to make. It is my go to recipe for frosting brownies.5 stars
