Ingredient Notes

  • Sour cream: Use full-fat sour cream for a thicker, creamier dip, but low-fat sour cream works well too. For a tangier twist, you can substitute all or some with plain Greek yogurt.
  • Mayonnaise: Adds richness and balances the sour cream’s tanginess for a smooth, creamy flavor. Full-fat mayonnaise keeps the dip thick and creamy, but light mayonnaise can also be used.
  • Herbs & Seasonings: Chives add a mild onion flavor and a pop of fresh color. Thinly sliced green onions can be used in a pinch, though the green tops provide the closest flavor. Dried dill, onion powder, and garlic powder round out the flavor.

Variations

  • Add Heat: Add a pinch of cayenne, a dash of hot sauce, or minced jalapeño for a spicy sour cream dip.
  • Add-Ins: Stir in finely chopped green onion, cooked crumbled bacon, or finely diced celery just before serving.

How to Make Sour Cream Dip

  1. Stir together sour cream, mayonnaise, herbs, and seasonings.
  2. Taste and adjust with salt and pepper.
  3. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes (full recipe below).

Dip Tips That Work

  • Chill It: Chill the dip before serving. The dried dill, garlic powder, and onion powder need a little time to soften into the creamy base.
  • Stir It: Stir it again after chilling. This makes the texture smooth and helps redistribute the seasonings.
  • Taste It: Taste it after the dip has been chilled. Add salt, pepper, or a pinch more dill as desired.

Keep It Fresh

Keep the dip in an airtight container for up to 7 days. Stir before serving again, since a little liquid may settle on top. Do not freeze.

Make it the night before parties, then garnish with extra chives right before serving for a quick and easy snack.

  1. I’ve made this dip now for several years and it is my GO-TO. It is an awesome chip and veggie dip. The only sub I do is replace half the chives with dried onion flakes. So yummy! Thank you for this amazing recipe!5 stars

  2. Super easy! Decided on a whim that I wanted dip now. This recipe popped up in my search, so I made it. It could not be any easier, yet is so good. That is even without waiting the recommended 30 minutes. This is a keeper.5 stars

  3. Good base but I thought it needed more pizazz so I added 1/2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce, a tbs of dried onion and 1/2 tsp of seasoned salt and pepper. Now we’re talking dip!4 stars

  4. This dip is amazing!! I am sorry I found it. Lol chips will not be the same without it.
I had to sub green onions for chives and tarragon for dill. Still came out perfect!5 stars

  5. I just made this a few minutes ago and it was so easy to make and delicious! This will now be my go-to quick dip for chips or even raw veggies that I like to eat. I’ve got other uses that I think I could make it work for too like putting it in a cold cut sandwich, I think that will be delicious and will try it tomorrow for lunch if I have any dip left, lol ☺️5 stars

  6. We made this recipe with Greek yogurt instead of sour cream (all out!) and it still turned out great! We weren’t sure how the seasonings would work, but just smelling the bowl it smelled like store bought sour cream chip dip. We enjoyed it so much, and will definitely come back to this recipe again!5 stars

  7. I had my toddler help make this for New Year’s Eve today! While a bit salty (his doing, not the recipe ) we both can’t stop sampling it! SWP Employee5 stars

      1. Never knew how easy it is to makes good dip! It’s delicious! I’ve now used this recipe three times! I used to search for dip mixes high and low in the grocery store that are labeled gluten free, because I have Celiac Disease. I can make my own now! Thank you! :)5 stars

  8. Today, DH comes home with a container of sour cream, announcing he is going to make some chip dip. Interesting, because I have never seen him make dip in 25 years. Lol. He then asks me where I keep the dry onion soup mix. Something I have never bought or used in all our time together! So I found this recipe and saved the day! It is very good and so easy to make! I used 1 tsp dried chives and added about ¼ tsp salt and a few turns of freshly ground pepper. Thanks for a great recipe!5 stars

  9. Hi,
I want to make this but was wondering if you use fresh dill or dried dill weed? Does it make a difference?

    Thanks! Love your posts!!

    1. Hi Sheri,
This recipe uses dried but if you have fresh, that would be great too! You’ll need about 1½ teaspoons of fresh to replace ½ teaspoon of dried.
