Ingredients For Dortios Casserole

  • Doritos: There are many flavors of Doritos, use your favorite (I use Nacho Cheese). Try siracha, cool ranch, or spicy-sweet chili.
  • Meat: This recipe uses lean ground beef seasoned with taco seasoning.
  • Sauce: The creamy sauce combines condensed soup, sour cream, and salsa (mild or hot). It’s easy and delicious.
  • Cheese: Cheddar or a Mexican cheese blend works well here.

Variations

  • Filling: Mix refried beans or black beans into the meat mixture, add extra vegetables, like corn or green chiles, or stretch the casserole by adding rice.
  • Toppings: Top with your favorite vegetables like shredded lettuce or fresh diced tomatoes, or add a dollop of sour cream or guacamole on top of each serving.
  • Garnish: Before serving sprinkle with cilantro, sliced green onions, or olives for added flavor.

Holly’s Casserole Tips

  • For crushing the Doritos, place them in a bag and crush them by hand, but not too small.
  • Drain the fat from the ground beef so the casserole is not too runny.
  • Buy pre-shredded cheese to make the assembly easier.
  • Spray the tin foil with cooking oil so it doesn’t stick to the top layer of cheese.
  • Remember to remove the foil for the last 20 minutes. This will help the casserole top layer turn brown and bubbly.

  1. I had a MAJOR Dortios obsession when I was a kid. I’d come home from school and eat most of a large bag. What I wouldn’t give for that metabolism again :)

    1. Ahh yes the elusive teenaged metabolism… :) Doritos is definitely one of my all time favorite treats. I don’t eat them often but I sure do love them!

  2. This recipe sounds tasty. I think I’ll try ground turkey in place of the ground beef, though. Thanks, for the cool recipe.

  3. Made this tonight just as written. Excellent! My son ate almost half the casserole! Definitely in my rotation of meals now. Hubby raved over it. So yummy!

  4. I made it exactly as instructed, and it didn’t look like the picture at all. The sour cream & soup mixture gave it a very light color and I think also caused the flavors to become too mellow so nothing really stood out except the Doritos. I’ve been wanting a recipe like this, so I’ll try it again but without the soup.

    1. Barbara,

Don’t eliminate the soup. It truly does add to the flavor. However, try using a spicier salsa and instead of using water, save the juice from the salsa and use that instead. I use Tostitos restaurant style salsa (the purple lid). It has some kick but is not overly spicy, IMO.

  5. I have made this recipe a few times now. Most recently last night to use up the Doritos that got demolished while traveling on vacation. I was left with a bag of mostly crumbs that no one would eat. My only change to this recipe is the addition of chopped green onions for additional garnish and…. I felt that draining the salsa was wasteful, so I kept the juice that was drained and used it in place of the water with the ground beef & taco seasoning. Otherwise…. SUPER EASY! SUPER DELICIOUS!

  6. I would definitely not drain the salsa, I would just add it to the ground beef and onions and let the liquid evaporate. Mix the other ingredients as listed.

  7. Omg…i’ve finally made the Doritoes layered casserole tonight…it was sooo Good! I’ve had it saved on my phone’s start screen for almost a year…i will definitely make it again and again…it’s so easy to make…make sure you have a glass of red wine close by

    1. LOL! So glad you finally were able to make this, we love it too! (And yes, a glass of red wine should always be nearby… always)!! :)

  8. I completely forgot to add the soup! It was sitting right in front of me. Before I noticed I had it all together and in the oven!!

  9. Why drain the salsa and use water, why not substitute the juice from the salsa instead of the water? It would enhance the flavor.
