Holly’s Recipe Highlights
- Flavor: Balanced, herby, and aromatic!
- Skill Level: This recipe is beginner-friendly. Just measure and mix!
- Prep Note: Making your own Italian seasoning is easy and allows you to adjust the flavors to your taste. You can adjust the sodium or ensure it’s gluten-free (just check your spices).
- Budget Tip: Making spice blends at home is often more cost-effective than purchasing pre-made versions, so make a large batch and stock up.
- Storage Suggestion: Store it in a spice jar or an airtight container for up to 6 months. You can keep it longer since the spices are dried, but it will begin to lose flavor.

I had to leave a review because this is the best seasoning we’ve ever had. I was tempted to skip the chili flakes because i’ve never heard or chili flakes in italian seasoning, but so glad we I didn’t skip them! Absolutely delicious. Thank you!
I always use online recipes but never leave reviews. I had to this time. This is our new favorite seasoning. We use it in recipes and also just straight on chicken or rice. Flavorful and slightly spicy. I questioned adding red pepper flakes to an Italian seasoning but I am so happy I did! Only thing I changed was only used 1.5 tbsp parsley, but that’s just because I ran out of parsley. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for coming back and leaving a review Laura! I’m so glad you enjoyed this seasoning.
Read through many comments..I, too, found myself without Italian seasoning and your site showed up in google. All ingredients on hand, so made a batch. On my chicken in oven now. If I like( and sure I will) I will be trying many of your others and they will be christmas gifts. Also made the avocado cucumber salad (added a few cherry tomatos).I think you and I will be great friends!
Ahh Martha, thank you so much for your kind words. I hope you love the seasoning!
I like simplicity of your Italian seasoning
description.
WAY TOO SPICY!!!
I had to throw out the batch of seasoning I made using this recipe. The pasta we tried using this spice was way too hot, no one in my family liked it. It was a sad waste of food. Very disappointed.
Oh no! So sorry to hear the Debbie. You can definitely reduce the amount of red chili flakes to your flavor preference next time.
I was out of Italian seasoning so I found yours and just left out some of the chills because I know how hot we like things. It was delicious. I could probably add a bit more chills. Thanks
It’s hard to find sympathy for people who negatively rate a recipe which is “too spicy” for them, when crushed red pepper flakes are clearly an ingredient.
Recipe creators can’t cater to every single sensitivity on the market, yet your review implies it’s a necessity.
If you, or someone in your family, clearly can’t tolerate any ‘heat’ or spice, whatsoever, you could’ve elected to leave out the red pepper flakes altogether, or reduced the measurement by 1/4-1/2. Instead, yours is one of the less than 3 negative reviews bc you can’t handle, or don’t like, any heat, or “bite” in your seasoning.
This recipe, by far, is my favorite homemade Italian seasoning blend, and I’m so glad I found it.
I used this to marinate (& grill) some chicken, along with olive oil, fresh lemon juice, and some kosher salt, and it was, hands down, the best chicken I’ve ever had. Period.
I highly rec this recipe, and anyone can adjust the amt of red pepper flakes to suit their level of spice preference.
I love making my own spice mixes!! Your jars are perfectly adorable!! Where might I find some? Thank you!
Those jars are from H&M Home however I bought them about 5 years ago and it doesn’t look like they’re available anymore.
Lookin’ forward to makin ya’lls mishmash of great stuff! Your recipes look wonderful!!
Does the italian seasoning have ground thyme or (dried, of course) thyme leaves?
I LOVE YOUR RECIPES!!!
Thank you Debra! It has thyme leaves.
Thank you! I’m about to cook special and it called for Italian Seasoning….. None found…. Ugh…
Yours popped up in my search, quick to make, and MUCH better than store bought.
THANKS
Omg. Just meet a really nice couple tonight. She is Italian and invited us to homemade Italian dinner tomorrow. He loves to cook Mexican. Wow. I am making your Homemade Italian Seasoning recipe and your Homemade Taco Seasoning recipe and take as hostess gifts to them. Nice! Thank you for info.
What a lovely and thoughtful gift, I’m sure they will love it!
OMG…all of your recipes make me want to run to the kitchen and start cooking!!!
Thank you so much Mozelle!
Can I use fresh parsley and fresh cloves of garlic for the Italian Seanoning please?
Hi Angela, if using fresh ingredients this spice blend won’t have the same shelf life. You can easily dry the parsley by chopping and leaving on the counter overnight though.
i have made dozen of your recipes and seasonings i love.
Yay! So happy to hear that Mary.
Very easy to make. I put my mix through a spice mill so that I had a powder as I don’t like finding piece of rosemary in my food. I will make it again , but next time I will leave out the chilli flakes as this mix is far too spicy for my taste.
I am so glad you found the seasoning easy to make. I hope that the next time with reduced chili flakes it pleases your palate!

If you put this blend through a spice blender or coffee grinder, the garlic powder will not done to the bottom of the jar so readily.
Thank you for sharing this tip Richard!
can’t wait to make this–just wanted to know: If I use marjoram -how much of it?
I don’t add Marjoram to my Italian seasoning so I can’t say for sure.
Hi Cindy, For this recipe I would add 1-2 Tablespoons, depending on your taste. I love Marjoram in my Italian seasoning mix too :)
Holly, I followed your instructions until I got the part that says “store for 6 months”.
Holly, what does this bit have to do with anything. Am I to expect that the parsley absorb the aromatics of the garlic and thyme? Sounds a bit like nonsense to me. But hey, what can a man expect from anyone these days? I am going to try the spice immediately in my meatballs.
Hey buddy, it says UP TO 6 months, which means, after 6 months, make another batch as the one you just created might not be fresh enough. She mentions “This will stay perfectly fresh for 6 months if stored in a dark cupboard or drawer and in an airtight container. This is good practice for all your herbs and spices!”. Please read carefully before leaving comments. Cheers mate :)
Sorry I”m making Italian seasoning
Hi couldn’t find chili flakes can I use crush chili pepper or ground chili
Thank-you
I would suggest skipping the chili flakes if you don’t have them.
Thank-you Holly
This is great. I have a herb garden but never thought of making up spice jars. Thank you for a wonderful idea.
You’re welcome Essi!
