Oh no!!  Did you run out of brown sugar in the middle of a recipe? Don’t worry, it’s super easy to make your own brown sugar!  It is not a complicated or confusing process and only requires less than 3 minutes and just 2 ingredients.  Who’da thunk?

This recipe makes 1 cup brown sugar and uses one tablespoon of molasses for each cup of white sugar.  You can you can adjust the amount of molasses in order to control how dark or light the brown sugar will be.

  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses


  1. Combine sugar and molasses in a large bowl and mix with a wooden spoon until the molasses is completely incorporated.
  2. To make a darker brown sugar, continue to add more molasses.
  3. Store it in an airtight container like a Tupperware container or a gallon bag to keep it fresh. If it does harden, add a bit of moisture by setting a moist paper towel on top of the container and then microwave it quickly.

  11. Is it possible to use maple syrup? I work at an assisted living facility & I run out all the time but hardly ever have time to go get molasses & we never order it because they always -think- there’s brown sugar. (It’s all complicated & I won’t go down that road :-| *rolls eyes*) but we always have syrup for waffles & pancakes so could I use that?

    • I haven’t tried it. I’d love to hear how it works out for you!

    • If you guys use apples. You can use the cores(and the peels of apples you pick. A lot in the store have wax on them.) and make a syrup that I’ve heard is good. You can google. Though, I’ve seen it mentioned on many frugal sites.

  12. I knew brown sugar had molasses in it but didn’t know that was all. Thank you so much. I stock up on white sugar during jamming season so I will be making my own brown sugar from now on. I find that a Tupperware container is great for storing it.

  13. This is a fantastic tip! I use brown sugar so infrequently, that I usually end up throwing it away. I would rather keep a jar of molasses around to make brown sugar than to buy brown sugar for a recipe and end up throwing it away. I can’t believe I didn’t already know this!

  14. I am new at this. So when I want to keep a recieipe so I can go back later or just save it, how do I do it?

  15. The most relevant point of brown sugar is that it has not been submitted to the refinery process of white sugar. This recipy does not make any sense.

    • It’s just a substitution recipe. If you’re in the middle of baking cookies and run out of brown sugar, this will work perfectly in its place. Hope that helps and have a great evening!

    • That’s not true. Brown sugar in the united states is just as processed as white sugar. Brown sugar in latin america is not as processed but it’s not the same thing at all as american brown sugar. Trust me. I live in Guatemala and my cookies need american brown sugar!
