Avocados – Choose soft and ripe avocados with intact skin. Mash or arrange slices as desired. To switch up the flavors, add in a DIY seasoning like everything bagel seasoning or even homemade lemon pepper seasoning.

Bread – Any bread from whole wheat to a slice of sourdough is perfect for avocado toast! Or make homemade garlic toast or plain white bread.

How to Make Avocado Toast

The Basics: Most of us know how to make simple avocado toast – slice bread, toast until golden brown, remove the pit, mush avocado on toast, and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Feeling Fancy?

Avocado toast is simply perfect but if you’d like to level up your usual avocado toast recipe, rub the toast with garlic before adding the mashed avocado.

This little trick adds a little something special and will really make it the best avocado toast you’ve ever had!

Toppings for Avocado Toast – Avocado toast is great when it’s simple with just a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, some flaky sea salt & ground black pepper, and a squeeze of lemon, but change it up with any of the variations below.

  • 1 avocado ripe
  • 2 slices bread any kind, sourdough is my favorite
  • 1 clove garlic cut in half (skin on)
  • salt and pepper
  • lemon juice optional, from a fresh lemon is best
  • extra virgin olive oil good quality

  • Cut the avocado in half and remove the pit.
  • Toast the bread to your liking.
  • While the toast is still hot, lightly rub the surface with the cut side of the fresh garlic clove.
  • Scoop out the avocado flesh with a spoon and use a fork to mash it onto the toast.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • If desired, drizzle with fresh lemon juice and olive oil or add the toppings below. Serve immediately.

The avocado can be mashed as smooth or as chunky as you’d like it. Avocado oxidizes (turns brown) quickly, so mashed avocado should be eaten right away.
If using only half of the avocado, leave the pit in the half that will be refrigerated for later use. This will help keep it fresh a bit longer.
Optional Avocado Toast Toppings:
  • everything bagel seasoning
  • fried egg and crispy bacon bits
  • lox, capers, minced onion
  • tomato, bocconcini, basil, balsamic glaze
  • sriracha and honey

Recipe Rating

  1. Oops …forgot to rate the recipe when I sent you my original email. This recipe deserves a 5 plus star rating!!5 stars

  2. Mmmmm …. I just made this super easy and delicious AV toast recipe using fresh cilantro from my garden. The ease of preparation and the taste was totally yummy! Totally agree with others – it’s so worth it to rub the toast with the garlic. Thank you for sharing this recipe Nagy — it’s absolutely the best one out there.

  3. Just had this. Amazing. I’m gonna try it without rubbing the garlic for comparison, but you are completely correct. I couldn’t taste the garlic but knew the accents really drove the flavors home. Slight variations are endless. I’ve eaten avacado with raw egg yolk forever but the olive oil brings a similar quality and easier to prepare. Had one with goat cheese too.5 stars

  4. This is my favorite avocado toast recipe. Simple and healthy, and above all wonderful for flavor! Make sure you rub the fresh garlic clove while the toast is hot. I did not and would not change a thing in this recipe.5 stars

    1. Try laying a full slice of onion on top or near it. I’ve never tried it with mashed avocado, but I put a wedge of onion in a closed container when I have half an avocado and that seems to work well!

  5. This way a great recipe, I just tried it for myself and husband. We both liked it and it tasted good, I also had it will turmeric cup of tea. Thank you!5 stars

  6. I had never tried avocado toast, but I’ve been curious and had an avocado ripe and ready, so I turned to Google. I’m so glad your recipe turned up – it was delicious!! Rubbing the toast with garlic is what made it!! Thank you so much for the recommendation, thoroughly enjoyed it!5 stars

  7. Wow, so creamy, so good. I’ve only used plain mashed avocado on regular toasted bread before. Your recipe with the added additions of using garlic, lemon juice, olive oil & cilantro is exactly what plain avocado toast needs! SUPERB! I was so inspired I used some Kings Hawaiian rolls I had on hand (split in half) for toast instead of bread. Toasted them with tad of garlic powder (didn’t have any fresh on hand) & Smart Balance then followed rest of your recipe (using chopped fresh cilantro). OMG SO GOOD! Really great way to fancy up some Kings Hawaiian sweet rolls into a fancy side dish! Thank You!5 stars

  8. I wasn’t expecting to be impressed… but this was incredible. A hear or two ago, I had tried simply slicing avocado onto toast, and wasnt a fan. Decided to give it another shot, found this recipe, and I am so glad I did. Thank you!5 stars

  9. I don’t keep avocados on hand, I get the individual mashed avocado containers that come Spicey or regular, so it is handy whenever I want it . Sometimes add salsa to it . So toast, mashed avocado and then sliced boiled egg with salt and pepper. We kept a little boy that ate it too and liked it !

  10. When i first heard of AT, i never thot that it would be anything special, so what, guacamole on a toast – bfd! But now that ive tried it for the first time – EXCELLENT!!! So simple n tasty, who knew?! … thanx!!5 stars

    1. Well I’m so happy to hear that you loved it so much! We just enjoyed this over the holidays ourselves!

  11. This recipe is amazing !!! I love garlic kick in every thing. It’s was a hit in my house ; it has changed the way how I will think of breakfast ; it is also a chick potluck choice ; I plan to send this card to my son’s school for faculty appreciation breakfast .5 stars

  12. Love this recipe!! It really was the last one I’d ever need. I was a bit skeptical about putting lemon on it, but it compliments it beautifully. I recommend using black pepper! I normally don’t write reviews but this absolutely deserved it. Top notch!! 5 stars

  13. Really liked this recipe.  Was looking for an Avocado Toast recipe that was simple, and this fit the bill.  Came out excellent.5 stars

  14. There’s nothing quite as delicious as Avocado Toast; it never fails! I’ll have to try rubbing some garlic on the bread–that sounds so good!
