There is truly no smell as amazing as fresh warm bread or rolls coming out of the oven! I remember coming home from school to the smell of freshly baked buns or bread, ready and waiting as the perfect after school snack! To this day when I smell fresh baking, I am immediately transported to that happy time and place of my childhood.

Fast forward to today with busy work schedules, running to kids activities and trying to simply keep up with life, it is difficult to put together a meal – let alone add on the extras!

This 30-Minute Dinner Roll recipe is wonderful because it is truly so easy to prepare, the buns take a short time to rise and the result is such a delicious treat that it is worth the extra effort! What a great side to enjoy with a hot and tasty bowl of soup or chili!

I love the convenience of buying dinner rolls from the store and the quality is very nice. In most cases however, store bought items have additives or preservatives in order to keep a longer shelf life. Making these homemade dinner rolls from scratch ensures that nothing is added except wholesome goodness! And these tasty little buns never last long enough to have to worry about shelf life!

If you are lucky enough to have any left over the next day, they do stay fresh and are so wonderful served with butter and jam in the morning! I love to enjoy this special treat with my morning coffee – it is comfort food at it’s best!

Our sense of smell is one of the most highly acute of all our senses and tends to influence our mood. It is no small wonder that when we smell freshly baked dinner rolls, it makes us feel happy and excited in anticipation of these tender, tasty treats!

  • 1 cup warm water
  • cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg beaten

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour I use closer to 3
  • cup milk room temperature

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400*F.
  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup water, oil, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until yeast is bubbly (about 8 minutes). Stir in beaten egg, softened butter, and salt.
  • With a stand mixer or by hand, add flour, one cup at a time until you have a soft dough that isn’t sticky. Knead by hand 10 minutes or 5 minutes with a stand mixer.
  • Divide dough into 18 even pieces, and form into balls. Place in a greased pan and cover with parchment paper and a kitchen towel.
  • Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place. (You can allow them to rise up to an additional 30 minutes if time allows).
  • Lightly brush with milk and bake on the middle rack for 10-12 minutes or just until browned.

Notes

Note:
If baking in a 9x13 pan, I make 15 rolls.
If baking in a 10x15 pan, I make 18 rolls.

To make with instant yeast:
  1. Combine 2 cups of flour with 2 packets of instant yeast (about 4½ teaspoons), sugar, and salt in a large bowl or stand mixer.
  2. In a large measuring cup, whisk together warm water, vegetable oil, melted butter, and egg. Add to the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
  3. Add the remaining 1 to 2 cups of flour, half a cup at a time, until you have a soft dough that isn’t sticky (you may not need all of it). Knead by hand for 10 minutes or 5 minutes with a stand mixer.
  4. Form dough into balls. Place in a greased pan and cover with parchment paper and a kitchen towel. Let rise for 30-40 minutes or until dough is double in size.
  5. Brush tops with milk and bake as directed.

  1. I’ve made these several times and they are absolutely delicious! I just have a question, it seems each time I can’t quite make 15 rolls into my 9×13 I can only make 10-11. Unless I make them very small but then they won’t fit the entirety of the pan. Am I doing something wrong?5 stars

    1. If they don’t fill the pan, they should rise a bit as they bake. If you’re successful making 10 to 11 rolls, you can continue making them that way! If you have a kitchen scale, you can weigh your dough and divide it by 15 to gauge the size.

  2. This is an amazing and easy recipe. Thank you for sharing! One question: Can these be frozen after raising, to be baked later?5 stars

  3. Ok, I admit to being extremely skeptical of a yeast recipe only requiring 30 minutes…how good could it even possibly be, right? I’ve never been proven so wrong! This is gonna become a staple recipe even if I’m NOT in a crunch for time. I did replace the sugar with honey, rapid rise yeast for the active, and bread flour for the AP, but all else was the same. I also had some time to kill, so I was able to allow it to rise for the full half hour– I definitely think that helped the final product. I made cute pull-apart rolls and brushed them with butter and garlic salt to go with our pasta dinner. My family devoured them and requested more immediately. Cannot say enough good things! Thanks!5 stars

  4. The recipe itself was very easy to follow but it was a very dry, tasteless roll. I believe it needs more sugar and fat content.1 star

  5. After reading most of the reviews, I was stoked to try this recipe! Followed the recipe to a t using only about 3 1/2 cups of flour. The dough looked and felt fabulous. But, the rolls didn’t rise as expected (even though I let them have extra time to rise) and they are much more dense than a dinner roll should be.
Most of that could be a issue with the baker (in this case, me).

However, it doesn’t account for the bland taste. Once I tasted one, I decided to put melted butter and a sprinkle of salt on top to help out the flavor profile.

I do enjoy your blog, but I’m still on the hunt for the perfect homemade dinner roll.3 stars

    1. I have not tried this recipe for cinnamon rolls but would love to hear how it turns out for you!

    2. I actually just tried that this last weekend. I found that I needed to increase the time in the oven, because the outside rolls (the ones touching the sides of the pans) baked quicker than the ones in the center of the pan. That being said, they were very tasty (and the middle ones were goey-ish if you’re into that). The problem was probably not the recipe, but the baker hahaha. It’s such an easy recipe that it’s worth a try!5 stars

  6. i have this page bookmarked. homemade yeast rolls, with simple, cheap ingredients and in less than an hour!!! BTW I let mine raise 30+minutes if I have time5 stars

  7. We made these the other day and they were great! Not yeasty tasting like other 30 minute recipes. It is now our go to recipe for quick, easy and tasty rolls! Thanks!4 stars

  8. Could I reduce the sugar or substitute something different for it? They were too sweet for my taste but wondering if I reduce the sugar if it will effect the rise time?

    1. Hi Amanda, I have only made this recipe as listed but other readers have reduced the sugar and had great results.

    2. I often use agave in place of the sugar, a little better for my diabetic hubby. Since it increases liquid I end up using just a bit more flour than someone using sugar, but they turn out great. My husband loves when I make them.5 stars

  9. My family loves these rolls! They are so easy to make, quick, and soft. My mom and sister have already asked me for the recipe. I’ll be making these from now on!5 stars

  10. Made these tonight and they were fabulous! I ended up using the whole four cups of flour to get them the right consistency. I eye-balled the size instead of dividing into 18 balls, but again, they turned out great (next time I will follow directions!!). I only let them rise for 8 minutes and they were light and fluffy. I will experiment and see if letting them rise longer makes them even better.

Thank you for such a great recipe! It has earned the right to go on an actual recipe card and I will definitely be making them again (Thanksgiving is right around the corner and they will be perfect for turkey night).5 stars

  11. These are now my go-to for dinner rolls. They really are done in 30 mins! Nice addition to a meal, and kids love em for their school lunches. Total score.5 stars

  12. Fantastic! So easy! I’ve never had good luck making yeast rolls until this recipe. Now I feel very confident making them. They don’t take all day to make and you can use bread flour if you want a little sturdier roll. I brush with milk and sprinkle kosher salt on top before baking. They are so yummy!5 stars

  13. Perfectly, pillows soft rolls! had to resist eating all of them. Easy recipe and I used a dough whisk by hand. Could use a little more salt, but that maybe my preference. Thank you for the recipe!5 stars
