So incredibly easy to make and wonderfully delicious, these 30-Minute Dinner Rolls are the perfect addition to any meal!

There is truly no smell as amazing as fresh warm bread or rolls coming out of the oven! I remember coming home from school to the smell of freshly baked buns or bread, ready and waiting as the perfect after school snack! To this day when I smell fresh baking, I am immediately transported to that happy time and place of my childhood.
Fast forward to today with busy work schedules, running to kids activities and trying to simply keep up with life, it is difficult to put together a meal – let alone add on the extras!
This 30-Minute Dinner Roll recipe is wonderful because it is truly so easy to prepare, the buns take a short time to rise and the result is such a delicious treat that it is worth the extra effort! What a great side to enjoy with a hot and tasty bowl of soup or chili!

I love the convenience of buying dinner rolls from the store and the quality is very nice. In most cases however, store bought items have additives or preservatives in order to keep a longer shelf life. Making these homemade dinner rolls from scratch ensures that nothing is added except wholesome goodness! And these tasty little buns never last long enough to have to worry about shelf life!
If you are lucky enough to have any left over the next day, they do stay fresh and are so wonderful served with butter and jam in the morning! I love to enjoy this special treat with my morning coffee – it is comfort food at it’s best!
Our sense of smell is one of the most highly acute of all our senses and tends to influence our mood. It is no small wonder that when we smell freshly baked dinner rolls, it makes us feel happy and excited in anticipation of these tender, tasty treats!

- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast

- With a stand mixer or by hand, add flour, one cup at a time until you have a soft dough that isn’t sticky. Knead by hand 10 minutes or 5 minutes with a stand mixer.
- Divide dough into 18 even pieces, and form into balls. Place in a greased pan and cover with parchment paper and a kitchen towel.
- Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place. (You can allow them to rise up to an additional 30 minutes if time allows).
- Lightly brush with milk and bake on the middle rack for 10-12 minutes or just until browned.

Love this. Quick and easy. Is it possible to cut back on the sugar or is that necessary to activate the yeast?
We have only tried the recipe as written, so can’t say for sure how it would turn out with less sugar. Other readers have tried (some with more sugar and others with less) with success, so you may wish to check the comments. Enjoy Charlie!
I made perfect rolls! I made perfect rolls! I’m not a good baker, a fact I blame on living at 7,080′. I reduced the yeast to 1.5 T and did everything else the same as the recipe. Made 15 rolls, did the hand kneading and had to bake longer, but the texture came out absolutely perfectly! I was so happy. I’m going to try all of your other recipes now. Thank you so much!
I make the clover leaf rolls from ur recipe as well as whole loaves and cinnamon rolls. It is my go to recipe.
Great recipe! My family and I really enjoyed them. Very fluffy, great taste. Nice to be able to make Great rolls in less than one hour. I might add less sugar next time and see how they turn out.
Made these using my kitchen aid mixer, so good, not as good next day but 15secs in the microwave did the trick, my husband and adult son just loved them, making them again tonight. Quick question would this recipe work as a loaf as well?
Hi Yvonne, we have never tried this recipe as loaf but other readers have with great results. There only tip was to really let it rise in the pan before baking. We also have this easy white bread recipe you might enjoy making as well!
great texture and simple prep. my only comment is they are a little sweet for my taste, i will make them again but reduce the sugar
Glad you enjoyed them, Henry!
Great and easy recipe. The rolls came out fluffy and delicious. The only thing that I will change next time I make them, will be to not to brush them with the milk. I will substitute melted butter instead
Fast, easy and delicious! Will make this again!
Humm. I followed the recipe as written and was so excited when I pulled them out of the oven, they looked and smelled amazing. And then we cut into them and they broke apart and crumpled. I had made soup and we dropped them into it and ate it on a spoon with soup.
Oh no, I am sorry that happened Jules. It sounds like they may have slightly overcooked. We recommend cooking them just until browned. If you try this recipe again, maybe reduce the cooking time slightly to accommodate. Glad you were still able to enjoy them!
Loved these and more importantly my 17yo son – who is literally a yeast roll and bread connoisseur – thinks they are wonderful. I did add a little salt, and substituted the milk wash with some melted butter (after cooking). Used my Kitchenaid to knead the dough and let them rise the extra time, around 25 minutes.
Came to find a recipe I can turn around in less than an hour (had mixed results with a milk and butter-based recipe that required two rises over 3+ hours) and was not disappointed! Thank you!
Wonderful! Turned out perfectly!
Hi just 2 questions:
1. What type of oil? Olive? Vegetable?
2. Do I use quick rise instant yeast or active dry yeast?
Thank you, looking forward to making these!
Hi Dayna,
1. You can use either and should still have great results.
2. We use traditional Active Dry Yeast for this recipe.
These didn’t cook all the way for some reason? Followed everything. Taste was okay but I would add something next time. However, it was a bit upsetting that they weren’t done when we dished them out :/ Not sure why that happened!
I used avocado oil, let them rise for 20 minutes, followed everything else and after 10 minutes, they were far from done. Finally gave up after 20 minutes. Left them in the cooling down oven and they finally browned but are still doughy inside. If Paul Hollywood had seen those rolls, they would have been in the trash. Brand new oven so it can’t be that. Very disappointed.
So sorry these roll didn’t work out for you, Janet. They are usually a success for readers.
I made these last night. They were wonderful! I split them into to round cake pans and covered one with plastic and put it in the refrigerator overnight. I’m baking it now. My husband thought they were store bought rolls!
So happy to hear that, Sylvia! We love this recipe too!
Sorry, but these turned out inedible. I literally spat out first bite I took, hopefully tried another, and spat that out, too. They were completely bland with not even a hint of sweetness (and I did not omit the sugar), and the texture was odd. I’m 100% certain that I did not omit any ingredients, and I followed the recipe carefully step by step. They did rise nicely (I let them go 25 minutes) and looked pretty, but the taste was completely blah. I considered trying to save them by using honey butter to add some flavor, but the unpleasant feel of the roll in my mouth (dry but oddly doughy) was so unpalatable that I decided to just dump them into the trash. Wish I could say something nice. I’m usually pretty positive.
Oh no, I am so sorry to hear that, Deb! This recipe always turns out great for us so I am not sure what went wrong.
I feel so bad! But the same thing happened to me. It was really weird! I’m not sure why, but they were very doughy, they looked really good too, but the taste was just far from bread. I used vegetable oil and activedry yeast. Not sure why they didn’t come out good.. :( Thank you though!!!
I agree! This recipe is hit or miss. I’ve have thrown out at least 2 batches! The final fix was 1/2 c sugar 1/2 tsp salt and 3 1/2 cups flour. Make sure your oil is fresh and let rise about 25 minutes. The extra flour helps them bake all the way through. This did it for me!
Thanks for sharing your alterations, Doni! So happy you were able to make this recipe work for you.
Best dinner rolls I have ever made and so easy. Followed the recipe exactly as written. Highly recommend this recipe.
I thought these rolls were great and a wonderful time saver. Thank you for the recipe; I’ll be using it again.
Amazing!!! So quick and sooo good! Definitely will be making these again!
I let these rise the extra 30 minutes and they were nice and fluffy. Delicious!
This was a life saver on Christmas
My daughters rolls failed to rise so I searched quick dinner rolls and said okay let’s try- oh my word … they were quick and soooo good!!!
I’ll be making these again!
