So incredibly easy to make and wonderfully delicious, these 30-Minute Dinner Rolls are the perfect addition to any meal!

There is truly no smell as amazing as fresh warm bread or rolls coming out of the oven! I remember coming home from school to the smell of freshly baked buns or bread, ready and waiting as the perfect after school snack! To this day when I smell fresh baking, I am immediately transported to that happy time and place of my childhood.
Fast forward to today with busy work schedules, running to kids activities and trying to simply keep up with life, it is difficult to put together a meal – let alone add on the extras!
This 30-Minute Dinner Roll recipe is wonderful because it is truly so easy to prepare, the buns take a short time to rise and the result is such a delicious treat that it is worth the extra effort! What a great side to enjoy with a hot and tasty bowl of soup or chili!

I love the convenience of buying dinner rolls from the store and the quality is very nice. In most cases however, store bought items have additives or preservatives in order to keep a longer shelf life. Making these homemade dinner rolls from scratch ensures that nothing is added except wholesome goodness! And these tasty little buns never last long enough to have to worry about shelf life!
If you are lucky enough to have any left over the next day, they do stay fresh and are so wonderful served with butter and jam in the morning! I love to enjoy this special treat with my morning coffee – it is comfort food at it’s best!
Our sense of smell is one of the most highly acute of all our senses and tends to influence our mood. It is no small wonder that when we smell freshly baked dinner rolls, it makes us feel happy and excited in anticipation of these tender, tasty treats!

- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1 large egg beaten

- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour I use closer to 3
- ⅛ cup milk room temperature

- With a stand mixer or by hand, add flour, one cup at a time until you have a soft dough that isn’t sticky. Knead by hand 10 minutes or 5 minutes with a stand mixer.
- Divide dough into 18 even pieces, and form into balls. Place in a greased pan and cover with parchment paper and a kitchen towel.
- Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place. (You can allow them to rise up to an additional 30 minutes if time allows).
- Lightly brush with milk and bake on the middle rack for 10-12 minutes or just until browned.

These tasted so bad.
Hi Maddie, sorry to hear that. We have these fluffy dinner rolls that may be more to your liking!
I cannot believe how delicious these are with only a 10 minute rise!! I have a couple of different roll recipes I turn to… one is an overnight refrigerated rise, the other is standard but still takes a couple of hours. I was making a soup for dinner & wished I had prepared one of them, so I turned to google for a quick roll recipe and this was the one I clicked. I quickly threw them together, sat the cookie sheet on top of a simmering pot of stock (had just turned off the burner) and 10 minutes later popped them in the oven. They rose beautifully and turned out absolutely amazing! I brushed butter on top and they were a hit!! Thank you!
I tested these two nights ago. I followed the recipe exactly, and it was an easy recipe. When I put the yeast in, I thought it was quite a lot compared to other recipes I’ve tried. I’m sorry to say they were not a hit. The flavor was good, but the texture was way too crumbly. Also (and this is sort of yucky to say but it does accurately describe it), after a couple of chews, the rolls turned into a strange paste in my mouth that was unpleasant to swallow. Was it the quantity of yeast? Then again, it seems to turn out well for lots of others. Hmm … They will not be on my Thanksgiving table today. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your readers!
Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Candy! We have another fluffy dinner roll recipe that you may enjoy better.
I made these exactly per the recipe but they did not turn out great. The consistency was all wrong and they never browned like your photo, they just looked like cooked balls of dough. Could not letting the dough rise for thirty minutes have been the issue? I waited twelve.
Hi Sarah, I am sorry to hear that. These are a denser roll, but they should still rise. It is possible your yeast wasn’t fresh? But for a fluffier roll you can try this homemade dinner roll recipe. To help them brown you want to make sure you brush them with milk before baking.
I’m so excited to try this recipe for Thanksgiving, can I make ahead and freeze them? Bake them the day of? Thanks!
Hi Laurie, the cooked buns freeze and reheat well. I have not tried freezing them first. I think it would work but can’t say for sure. Other readers have had success, let us know if you try it!
Nice, quick and easy. They taste great.
I understand the reason behind having ads but the pop up ads and video are sooo.. annoying when I’m trying to read the recipe.
Followed instructions exactly, mine came out uncooked in the center so I will bake for longer next time but good recipe other than that !
Very easy to make and you can make it early and just let it rise I didnt brush with milk and left out the salt. When they came out I brushed them with butter and covered with foil. Will be making these for turkey day!
This recipe is great! I made them for a family dinner and they were a big hit. They are super easy to make.
Made these tonight for the first time. I shaped into hotdog rolls and made 8 rolls. Fantastic. I would add a little more salt next time but otherwise thought the recipe was perfect. The crumb is tight but the bread is soft and light. I didn’t think I could make bread in under an hour but now I know! Wow!
My family just moved to CO, and I was a little bit worried these rolls wouldn’t work. I bake bread a lot, but these quick rolls are a family favorite.
I’ve made them three time since we’ve been here, and they have been a success every time. (I do add about a 1 tbsp of water and go a little lighter on the yeast.)
Thank you for this great recipe!
I have tried this 2 times and have no idea what I am doing wrong. Ist time I was using up cake and pastry flour so I thought ok my bad. Tried again with regular flour but it just didn’t rise as it should. The yeast looked great and bubbly frothy so I know that was right. My only question was kneeding for 10 min. Is that too much?
Hi Jennifer, for this recipe we use all-purpose flour. The temperature of your kitchen can affect rise time. But in regards to kneading, we knead the dough for approximately 10 mins by hand or about 5 mins using a mixer. Hope that helps!
Really easy. I added quite a bit more than 4 cups of flour as they dough still felt sticky. I’ll probably try less sugar next time.
Meant add. Hand kneading works best for this recipe. The stand mixer doesn’t give it the fluffiness and texture we like.
Great recipe. I did cut salt down. Turns out perfect each time. As a baker this is my go to “honey will u make rolls plz”.
So happy to hear that, Kennie!
2nd time making these!!! Thanks so much! ♥♥♥
Glad you enjoyed them, KateB!
Loved then awesome recipe
Does this work with gluten free 1:1 flour?
Hi Helen, other readers have made this recipe with 1:1 gluten-free flour with great results!
This is one of the most forgiving bread recipes for a bread noob like me!! Found that dough was still sticky with 3 cups of flour, so added the 4th as per recipe. Dough rose up beautifully in 30min and bread texture was so soft and fluffy. All done in an hour including noob me figuring out why dough was still sticky (so u can see how foolproof this recipe is heh). Thank you, this recipe is a keeper! :)
So happy to hear that, Zie. Foolproof is our favorite kind of recipe!
Well maybe make sure you read the recipe don’t skim it because I put in 2 tsp yeast not 2 Tbsp!!! Hoping they will turn ok somewhat ok! Super easy recipe though thanks
Well they did not turn out ok hahaha unless you wanted o play hockey than they were perfect! Totally my fault but either way they were beautiful! And I can not make the premade already frozen version of these so I’m excited to try again!
Uh oh, I am sorry to hear that Shea! You will have to try them again, they are so delicious.
