What is borax? Though many of us have heard of it, most of us are not totally sure what it is or what it can be used for. Borax is made from the mineral sodium borate and is an awesome, inexpensive product to keep in your home. Borax is sort of a miracle cleaner and can be used for tons of household jobs.
Carpet Stain Remover: Throw out your carpet cleaner! Borax will remove tough stains (like wine, coffee or tea) from fabrics & carpets. Combine ½ cup Borax with 1 ½ cups warm water and apply to carpet stains. Allow to sit for 15-30 minutes and then clean with fresh water. Repeat if needed.
Make Homemade Bouncy Balls: What a fun educational project! Make homemade bouncy balls using Borax and a few other items you probably already have!
Pesticide: If you have a pest problem then try using borax. It is much safer and less expensive than many pesticides. Borax can be used an insecticide to get rid of ants, cockroaches and fleas.
Fire Retardant: No fire extinguisher? Borax can put out small fires like campfires or bonfires… and there is no flare up danger.
Rust Remover: Mix together 1 cup of Borax, and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice… add hot water to get desired consistency (you can make a paste or a liquid depending on the amount of rust and the application). Use to get rid of rust stains on your old pans and more!
Make Homemade Slime: This is fun and easy to make, we have made it at our local science center many times!! Here’s how to make homemade slime!
Deodorizing: You don’t need expensive air fresheners, Lysol or other products. They don’t even work nearly as well as borax. You can use it to deodorize smelly areas like garbage cans and pails, litter boxes or to deodorize pet urine, feces or sour milk spills.
Bathroom Cleaner: Borax is a great cleaner for your bathroom surfaces like tubs, toilets, showers and sinks. (Find great Homemade Bathroom Cleaner Recipes here).
Dishes: Borax and water is a great dishwashing solution.
Crafts: Borax is an ingredient in many craft projects including Borax Crystal Snowflakes from Martha Stewart
Kitchen Cleaning: It also works for a thorough refrigerator cleaning, countertop scrub and sink cleanser.
Though you may have never guessed it, Borax is one of the single best cleaning and deodorizing items you can have in your home and for much cheaper than a lot of the products that you see on your local grocery store’s cleaning aisle.
