Notes From The Test Kitchen
Rice is one of my favorite side dishes because it goes with almost anything. This seasoned rice recipe turns basic white rice into a flavorful side with a few kitchen staples.
• Pairs with almost any main dish, from baked chicken to grilled steak or pork chops.
• Rice is a budget-friendly side dish.
• Uses ingredients you likely have on hand.
• We love that we know exactly what is in this homemade version and can control the ingredients.

Seasoned Rice Ingredient Tips
- Rice: I use white rice in this recipe but you can replace it with brown rice, wild rice, basmati, or jasmine rice. Adjust the cooking time and liquid according to the package directions.
- Onion/Garlic: Onion and garlic add flavor. You can replace them with 1 teaspoon onion powder and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder.
- Seasoning: The rice will absorb the flavors from the broth and seasonings. Soy sauce adds salt and a savory flavor while Worcestershire adds a bit of depth.
Variations
- Broth can be replaced with bouillon cubes and water. Low sodium broth may need extra salt added.
- Add dried herbs and spices before cooking. Try paprika, thyme or oregano.
- Stir in finely chopped vegetables like celery, carrots or bell pepper for additional color and flavor.

Holly’s Tips for Fluffy Seasoned Rice
- Lightly brown the rice before cooking to add flavor and help keep the grains separated.
- Seasoned rice tastes best when the seasoning is cooked into the grains instead of mixed in after cooking.
- Avoid lifting the lid or peeking while the rice is cooking.
- Keep leftover rice in an airtight container in the fridge or store in the freezer.

I made this Seasoned Rice along with baked chicken and Green Beans with Bacon for dinner last night. Excellent! I will make this side dish over again. Thanks for the recipes!
Followed directions exactly. Family loved it. So good.
Hi there, would this work with vegetable broth?
Yes it will!
Hi,
I am sure this is a great recipe but I am looking for a specific one which I lost. This was a tiny butter tart in miniature tart pans. It has a shortbread base crust which is rolled into a tiny ball and pressed into the tart tin. This recipe also uses currants. Do you have that recipe or have you heard of it. It is to die for.
Thank you. I do enjoy your recipes and have made many.
Pat
It sounds delicious, but I don’t have a recipe for those! I hope you are able to find it.
This is a go-to side dish for us. If I say “seasoned rice,” everyone is excited for dinner in my house. It’s easy and absolutely delicious! It is the only rice I can make. All other attempts get burnt to the bottom of the pan.
Excellent recipe!! I have since made again using various seasonings. Awesome side dish
Love it, this is a family favorite!
this is perfect. it’s our go-to recipe and we make it almost weekly. it’s just like steakhouse rice
I added carrots and celery with no extra seasoning as the men add salt before they taste anything first. Will have a little sausage with it for tonight’s meal. Thanks!!
Followed the recipe and this was very good. My husband normally eats plain white rice with butter salt and pepper. He told me to make this again
I need to serve 12. Can I simply triple this recipe without additional, adjustments?
That should work just fine, you’ll want to ensure your saucepan is large enough but other than that, no changes needed.
I cannot find what a serving size is…
A serving is about ¾ cup.
Made this for my family. It turned out perfect and was delicious. Followed exactly and was perfect! Oh and there are two things you should know:
1. I have never been able to cook rice. It always comes out, mushy or undercooked.
2. My daughter is a very picky eater, she loves rice, except when I make it.
This was a huge hit, and I would definitely make it again!
Happy to hear this recipe was a hit, Rachel!
