This Apple Crumble Recipe has tender cinnamon-spiced apples tucked beneath a buttery brown sugar crumble. It brings back sweet memories of my mom often making fruit crumbles and crisps, filling the house with the warm, comforting smells of baked fruit and cinnamon.

Ingredient Notes

- Apples: I use Granny Smith apples, as I love their tart flavor and they hold their shape well. Other great options include Honeycrisp, Gala, Braeburn, or Pink Lady.
- Flour: All-purpose flour thickens the juices in the filling and is also the base of the crumble topping.
- Sugar: A sprinkle of cinnamon sugar sweetens the filling, and a combination of white and brown sugar is used in the topping for flavor.
- Butter: Cold butter is mixed into the topping for flavor and a buttery texture. Margarine can be used in place.
- Variations: Feel free to add some finely chopped pecans or walnuts for some extra crunch.

A wonderful recipe almost identical to the one my mom used when growing up. Apples are super sweet these days and as a nutritionist, I like to watch overall sugar. We can easily omit the added sugar in the apples. Lots in the topping and usually served with ice cream!
Also, I made this dish as a demo at work and grated hard butter from the fridge, rather than use a pastry cutter, which worked incredibly well. Also, our good old hands work well to make it crumbly as well!
Love the simplicity of this recipe and the fact that it’s so fruit forward without excessive sugars and refined flours! Thanks for all your recipes Holly – I follow you and just gifted myself your cookbook! I’m a fellow BC’er and proud to know you’re a homegrown girl!
So glad you loved it, great tip for the butter! So glad you’ve enjoyed the recipes and my book, thank you so much for your support ♥️
What type of apples?
I use Granny Smith apples, as I love their tart flavor and they hold their shape well. Other great options include Honeycrisp, Gala, Braeburn, or Pink Lady. You can also find this info in the post. Enjoy!
what can you use if you do not have a pastry cutter?
You can just use a fork to combine all the ingredients.
Can this be made gluten free by substituting almond flour, GF flour or a combo with rolled oats?
I would recommend using GF flour. If you try it I would love to hear how it turns out Jan!
Can this recipe be doubled and put into a 13 x 9 pan? How long should it be baked for? We have a large family.
Doubling in a 9 x 13 should work just fine Susan! I would plan to bake at the same 375°F for about 50–60 minutes, beginning to check at 45 minutes. It’s done when the topping is golden and the juices are bubbling at the edges.
I was blessed with an abundance of apples and wanted something I could gift that was super simple. I have made this probably a dozen times over the past couple weeks for birthdays, thank yous, you name it and everyone has said it’s the best they have had. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
I am thrilled to hear this recipe has been a hit Sara!
Made this and brought it to work and it was gone so fast! Everyone raves about it.
I’ve made this crumble several times as written and it is SO GOOD! Every time I take it to a gathering it gets excellent reviews. Thank you for a great recipe that reminds me of the one my mom made when I was young.
I was looking for a recipe to throw together for the grandkids (I had a bagful of little galas I needed to use) wow! So easy and absolutely perfectly delicious! This was a hit with the kids and adults. Saved for regular dessert rotation😊
Thank you for the recipe! I used an 8×8 pan and chopped my apples. I love using ginger, so increased it to a hefty 1/4 tsp. Hubby loved it (hopefully now I won’t have to make crumble pie again!). I will definitely make again!
Thank you for this delicious recipe. I have made it several times when having guests for dinner. Each time I am told it is the best apple crumble they have ever had! I have to agree. I have tried several recipes and this is the one I will always stick to now. Thanks again!
the crumble tastes so good. however mine got burnt at the top.
the 375f is -‘> 190c Did i use the wrong settings?
Oh no! I haven’t had that problem. You could cover the crumble with foil if it starts to brown too much.
I have tried several of your recipe’s, and loved everyone. Thank you for all the good eat’s. Looking forward to more of them.
I used your recipe & made this several times last year, it is absolutely delicious! I’ll be making more soon
When apples are in season can I make big batches? And then freeze the whole recipe, then pull them out as needed and bake?
Yes you can! This freezes well before or after baking. I would love to hear how they turn out for you.
Tasted good in the end but the recipe isn’t great.
Sorry to hear that you didn’t love this as much as we do.
Grated some fresh ginger into the apple mixture. Added a handful of oats to the crumble. Otherwise followed this delicious-looking recipe and is in the oven as i type. thank you!
This is so yummy it’s my sons and lovers favorite!!! I’ve already made it with fresh cherries too – mmmmmm.
Can I freeze uncooked topping?
Hi Kathy. I am glad you enjoyed the recipe. And yes you can freeze the topping.
This apple crumble was excellent! I made 3 deserts for our Christmas get together and my family raved about this one, cleaned the whole pan clean, and requested I make it for every get together from now on! I’m not exaggerating when I say I can’t go wrong with any recipe I make from Spend with Pennies! Every single one turns out amazing!
