Ham and Corn Chowder is the perfect soup. It’s easy to make, rich and creamy and everyone absolutely loves it! A juicy Honey Baked Ham what my family always prefers for holiday meals (although I love a traditional roast turkey with stuffing, there is power in numbers).
I always make an extra big ham so I can be sure to have lots of leftover ham for recipes and easy meals for days!
Ham Chowder
I’m one of those people who can’t just cook a little, I always make a huge feast including a ham big enough to feed an additional 47 people (who aren’t invited) along with our family of 6. The great thing is that we usually have leftovers so I can make things like Cheesy Ham and Potato Casserole, Easy Ham and Potato Soup and this amazing Ham and Corn Chowder!
Comforting and Versatile
Soup is a wonderfully comforting and versatile meal whether it’s a slow cooker soup or a quick 20 Minute Broccoli and Cheese Soup! This recipe features loads of fresh corn and ham in a rich creamy broth to warm your belly from the inside out!
How to Make Ham Chowder
Making this Ham and Corn Chowder recipe is as easy as 1,2,3!
- Cook bacon and onion.
- Add remaining veggies, ham and broth and simmer.
- Add milk/cream and thicken.
Toppings
I like to top this with crumbled bacon and green onions but of course adding cheese is another amazing way to enjoy this recipe! You can sprinkle a little on top when serving or stir in 1 1/2 cups of sharp cheddar after you have removed the soup from the heat.

So delicious! I was looking for a recipe to use with leftover ham and this one sounded perfect. It turned out even better than I imagined. Huge hit – very flavorful! Will definitely make this again.
This recipe is amazing, I have just completed making it. Not just one recipe, I multiply it by 8 and have filled a Nesco Roaster! My family absolutely love it.
Sounds so great. Can’t wait to try it.
This was the BEST ham & corn chowder! My husband LOVED IT!! I used Italian seasoning instead of thyme and Half & half instead of milk…also fried up bacon to crumble on top before I served it. Husband told me that this recipe is a definite KEEPER!!
So happy to hear that Marcia!
Can you leave the ham out if you don’t eat it?
Sure you can! You might like to increase the salt a bit because ham does add a bit of a smoky/salty flavor.
This soup was really a hit with my family. A great use of leftover ham from Easter. I used the ham bone with the chicken broth.
That’s the perfect way to use up leftover ham Regina! Great idea :)
We have made this recipe twice already and are looking forward to making some this
weekend. The best corn chowder recipe and so simple to make. I substitute the thyme with Italian seasoning and usually use more bacon as everyone loves bacon.
Ugh. This recipe took a decent amount of work and just tasted….weird. It should be called “corn and red pepper soup.” I couldn’t even taste the ham even after doubling it. I would do half the corn and half the red pepper, and no potatoes bc it gave it a grainy taste. I worked at it for two hours trying to get the flavor better- no luck! This is the 2nd bad recipe I’ve tried on this site (hamburger soup) and I won’t be wasting my money trying another.
Sorry you didn’t enjoy it Morgan, this is a corn chowder so we definitely up the corn in this recipe. As for the potatoes, they do have a starchy texture this also adds body and consistency to the soup.
I can’t say what went wrong with the recipes for you as both have excellent reviews from readers.
This corn chowder is amazing! Thanks for sharing.
These recipes look delicious
I love that it doesn’t break the bank to make one of these delicious soups. Thank you for sharing
Can this be done using broth made from the ham bone? Possibly substituting the chicken broth with the ham broth.
Hi Kelsey, we have only made this recipe as listed. But it should work. Let us know how it turns out!
Hi, I’m really enjoying your amazing recipes, thank you so much for sharing.

Thos recipe is awesome! We love it! Thank you
So happy to hear that you love the chowder Ardella!
Can you use a thick slice of ham from the deli or is it better from the can or a package one
Hi Joanne, a thick slice of deli ham would probably work, but I find the packaged kind gives such a good flavor!
This is a home run. I used light creme. For next day left over I added cooked broccoli to soup
I am so glad you enjoyed thi recipe Richard! Adding broccoli sounds like a yummy twist!
Mmmm. Really good soup!
Thank you Angie, I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Yay! Glad you loved it Angie!
This is great!! I was worried the potatoes wouldn’t be done in that amount of time, but they are perfect. Thank you for allowing me to add to my ‘soup collection’.
Glad this recipe made it into your soup collection!!
Do you have instructions to make this in the instant pot?
I haven’t made this recipe in the Instant Pot, please let us know how it works out for you if you do.
I recently made your chicken and dumplings recipe. Easy and delicious. Turned out perfect. Loved it. Will be sure to make it again.
So glad you love the recipe Linda!
I would like to know how to make this recipe in the slow cooker
This is the version of Corn Chowder I make in the slow cooker. You can substitute the bacon for ham if you prefer!
