This rocky road recipe is one of the easiest treats to make!
Chocolate and peanut butter are tossed with nuts and marshmallows. Simply chill, slice, and enjoy.
An Easy No-Bake Treat
You may have heard of Rocky Road ice cream, and this treat has the same flavor in a fudgy little bite.
- Quick & Easy: Since it’s no-bake, rocky road is quick to prepare.
- Customizable: Swap out ingredients, and add nuts or your favorite dried fruits.
Ingredients in Rocky Road
The ingredients you need to make Rocky Road are pretty simple and you very likely already have them on hand!
I use a combination of chocolate, peanut butter, nuts, and marshmallows.
I usually choose pecans or walnuts but you can use whatever nuts you like best (or have on hand)!
You can use colored marshmallows instead of white, add raisins or dried cherries, chocolate chips or cereal bits.
Use your imagination and your family’s favorites to create a dessert square everyone will love!
- Chocolate chips: Semi-sweet chocolate chips keep this treat from being too sweet; dark chocolate chips can also be used.
- Peanut butter: Use either creamy or crunchy peanut butter.
- Nuts: Walnuts and peanuts add texture and flavor. Swap in almonds or pecans if you’d like.
- Mini marshmallows: These give a great texture and add sweetness. While I prefer the flavor with white marshmallows, you can use fruit-flavored marshmallows in place.

Honestly way better than i thought, used walnuts and pecans, subbed some nuts for toffee bits. Definitely will make again
Your site is the first place I go when looking for a recipe for any dish! When I wanted to make Rocky Road, of course I found this one! This was very easy to make and has so many options for add ins. I added my own touch and pressed crushed graham crackers on top. So yummy!
It’s an ok recipe. I’ve had better.
Can I use jumbo (large) marshmallows for this recipe? If yes, how much should I use?
Yes, I would recommend cutting them into smaller pieces (kitchen scissors make this task easier). You’ll need about 24 large marshmallows.
The peanut butter was a mistake for me. It made it way too rich and lost a lot of the chocolate goodness. I thought I would love since I love peanut butter and chocolate combinations, but this was a miss. Might try again without PB, increase marshmallows, and add some sea salt.
I also recommend freezing instead, as my set did not cut cleanly after chilling for several hours.
Can the Rocky Road treats be frozen?
These can be frozen for a couple of months.
When did they start putting walnuts in S’mores? Can I just use 1 1/2 cups peanuts? I hate walnuts
Hi Garry, walnuts are a classic for Rocky Road but you can definitely swap them out for any nut you prefer! Additional peanuts would be a great option.
It’s not S’mores. It’s Rocky Road
It’s not s’mores, it’s Rocky Road!
Holly another fabulous recipe! Just cut these up and i can’t wait to give them as gifts for Christmas! So easy and out of this world! I doubled the recipe and used a 9×13 sure to please the sweet teeths in my family!
Merry Christmas Kim!
Can you use peanut butter chips instead of creamy peanut butter? And do you put condense milk?
I don’t think the peanut butter chips would give it the same consistency. This recipe does not use condensed milk.
So the Aussie way is with cherries and coconut –but how much of each?? and do I still use the chocolate and marshmallows? (I would like to omit the nuts, if possible)
HELP PLEASE
I’ve only made it as written, hopefully another reader can help. :)
Halloween
I made these for the family and everyone loved them!
Sooo yummy.
Thank you for the recipe
Just made this today and it’s awesome! I didn’t have any peanuts and less than a cup of walnuts, so I put about half cup walnuts, cup of almonds and some leftover mini Smarties. The result is amazing!
Those sound like delicious variations for this recipe!
I’ve been making for years but my problem is my chocolate is always way to soft & wont set to a firmness.. what in the world am I doing wrong..
Are you using regular peanut butter (and not a natural peanut butter)?
Made this recipe trying the Aussie version with the cherries in it and it was a welcome hit! I also used pecans instead of walnuts because they aren’t as bitter. As long as you have the chocolate/marshmallow/any nut combo happening, you’ve a Rocky Road, it’s the finishing touch that makes it a ‘Supreme!’
Kelly, i have been making this recipe without nuts for years, and they are still delicious.
Any substitute suggestion for the walnuts?
Any type of nuts will work perfectly in this recipe.
I have been making this every XMAS. Everyone loves them
These were very easy to make and yummy good! They will definitely be added to my list of Christmas goodies to make.
I love your easy recipes. With not a lot of time, I can make almost anything for my meals. THANK YOU.
Thank you Carolyn!
I don’t care for peanut butter. How can I make it w/out it?
I’ve only tried this as written so I can’t say for sure.
Have you tried substituting Avacado? You substitute cup for cup. I think one large avacado would do the trick, just make sure you refrigerate it, afterward, It will spoil because it’s a raw food, but it will give you the texture.
Add a cup of butterscotch chips instead of peanut butterand a Tlbs of butter, works great.
Thank you for the alternative, Caroline. My son is allergic to PB so I was wondering what I could use a substitute. I wonder how Nutella or almond butter or sunflower butter would be. Guess I’ll just have to give it a try! Oh darn…I’ll have so many batches! HAHA
I’m going to try either pecan butter or hazelnut butter.
some recipes call for butter and not PB Google recipe
however this sounds delicious
Delicious recipes thank you
