Tender egg noodles are tossed with creamy cottage cheese and a pat of butter, making this dish rich and savory. Made with pantry staples, this nostalgic recipe is perfect for weeknights!

Holly’s Recipe Highlights
- Flavor: It’s creamy, buttery, and cozy. The noodles are soft, the cottage cheese is mild and tangy, and the onions add a hint of sweetness.
- Skill Level: Make this quick and delicious meal in less than 20 minutes with only one skillet to wash.
- Serving Suggestions: Pour the mixture into a casserole dish and top with homemade seasoned breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese. Broil in the oven until the cheese is browned and bubbly.
- Budget Tip: Stir in leftover meat and make it into a one-pot main dish.
Ingredient Tips for Cottage Cheese and Noodles
- Cottage Cheese: Full-fat cottage cheese will make the richest sauce, but you can use any kind you like. For an even coating, opt for small curd cottage cheese.
- Noodles: Make homemade egg noodles or buy them. Choose wide egg noodles for a classic texture.
Variations
- Match the noodles to the menu and try different seasoning blends like taco, Greek, or a simple lemon pepper seasoning.
- Some other pasta shapes to try are penne, bowtie, cavatappi, or heavier spaghetti varieties like bucatini.
- For a perfectly smooth sauce, puree the cottage cheese with an immersion blender before using. Ricotta can be used in place of cottage cheese if desired.
How to Make Cottage Cheese and Noodles
- Cook egg noodles according to package directions. Drain but don’t rinse.
- Cook the onion in butter until lightly browned.
- Add onion to the pasta with cottage cheese and seasonings (full recipe below) and heat through.
Serve with sour cream and parsley if desired.
Storing Leftovers
Keep leftover cottage cheese and noodles in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
Reheat leftovers to enjoy for lunch or try using them as a layer for lasagna or a hearty tuna casserole.

Hi! This looks very good! However, What’s a serving? 1/2 cup, cup? Whole recipe?
Thank you very much.
Hi Jeri, a serving is approximately ¾ to 1 cup.
I’m 71 years old and have been eating this all my life. My grandmother always made it on Fridays with whatever kind of fish we had. She and Mom didn’t like conventional Mac & cheese.
Dodie, it is nice to hear how this recipe brought back so many memories for you. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely fantastic recipes .
Thanks
Kind regards.
Clive
Mr. Clive Smith, thank you so much for you lovely comment. I am glad you are enjoying the recipes.
My husband was born in Hungary & I learned all the Hungarian dishes. He taught me to make something he called “Slider”. It was pasta noodles, and then equal parts cottage cheese mixed all together. Heated in the oven & then topped with lots of crunchy bacon. This recipe reminded me of the Hungarian recipe so much but I added equal parts sour cream and still topped with crunchy pieces of bacon.
I love that you learned Hungarian dishes! The addition of bacon would be so great in this recipe, thank you for sharing!
I grew up eating pasta with cottage cheese and sour cream. With salt or sugar. I still make it for my kids who also love it, they call it Croatian mac n cheese.
So delicious!
Can I use Ricotta instead of cottage cheese? Sounds delicious..
I can’t see why not! Let us know how it goes!
I HAVE BEEN EATING COTTAGE CHEESE ON NOODLES ALMOST ALL MY LIFE. THE ADDITIONS MADE IN THIS RECIPE MAKE THIS MUCH MORE FILLING AND BETTER.
So glad you enjoyed it, Marylea!
Grew up eating this with a Pork Roast and Peas. Haven’t made it for a while. Tasty.
That sounds delicious!
