Tater Tot Casserole is an incredibly easy dish to make and everyone always loves it!

Layers of tater tots, meat and veggies are covered in a simple sauce and cooked until hot and bubbly.  It’s easy, creamy and oh so yummy!

The best part is, this tater tot casserole is so versatile depending on what is in your fridge!

I love casseroles from Unstuffed Cabbage Roll Casserole to Homemade Mac and Cheese, there’s just something so comforting about a hot and bubbly meal coming out of the oven.  While this easy Tater Tot casserole isn’t the prettiest dish ever, it definitely tastes amazing!

Of all of the versions out there, I definitely think this is the best Tater Tot casserole because it’s so easy to put together yet really delivers on flavor (well, this and of course Mexican Tater Tot Casserole).

I start with a layer of tater tots on the bottom of a slow cooker (I use a 4QT CrockPot for this recipe), and top it with a layer of ground beef.  I use frozen veggies right from the freezer meaning no prep required and then top with another layer of Tater Tots.

A quick and simple sauce is added with a bit of cheese and it all cooks to perfection in the CrockPot.  Easy peazy right?!

Once cooked, this Tater Tot Casserole is absolutely delicious and actually reminds me of a cottage pie (which is the same as Shepherd’s Pie with beef instead of lamb).  Surprisingly enough, cooking this in the slow cooker you still get the crusty bits on the edges (which is one of my favorite parts).

While I use frozen veggies, you can use fresh veggies in this recipe too!     The frozen makes it easy because they don’t require any prep, I just give them a quick rinse in a strainer and pour them into the slow cooker.  If you’re using fresh veggies, there is no need to pre-cook them, just dice them fairly small and they’ll cook along with the rest of the dish.

The whole dish will take you literally just minutes to put into your slow cooker and you can use whatever you have on hand! I’ve added lean ground beef and frozen vegetables into this tater tot casserole but use up any leftover beef, chicken or turkey you might have!

While I most often cook this in the slow cooker, of course Tater Tot Casserole can be baked in the oven to golden perfection as well.  Simply place the beef layer in a 9×13 pan (or any casserole dish will do) and top with veggies and then Tater Tots.  Sprinkle with cheese and sauce and bake at 400°F for about 30 minutes or until golden and bubbly.

This easy Slow Cooker Tater Tot casserole is a complete meal in itself but we usually serve with a nice fresh green salad and some crusty bread!

  1. Excellent recipe . Both my husband and I really enjoyed it . Will be making it again often. Didn’t change a thing.5 stars

  2. I made this added taco seasoning to the meat and added kielbasa and greenbeans and chopped pepperchini. Tried it couple months ago and I was bound to tweak it to what the fam liked. Sry I tweaked it I have picky eaters.

    1. If they are similar to tater tots, I think this would work fine. Let us know if you try it!

  3. O M Gosh
Been preparing same things for a long time,  so when I try something new I call it refrigerator surprise.     “Surprise”  it is so yummy!
If you can tell by reading a recipe if it’s good,
    “Try it you’ll like it”

  4. I have never made tater tot hotdish in a slow cooker before. With the slow cooker, do the tater tots not end up mushy? One of the things that we like about the oven-baked version is that the tater tots on top end up crispy. Thanks!

  5. I make a casserole using burger, corn, salsa, and cheese then top with tater tots and more cheese then bake.

  6. You show garlic powder in the ingredient list but onion powder in the directions. Which one is it?

  7. I made this recipe this Sunday . It was well received. I baked it in the oven, but next time will use my crock pot. I have never before bought either tater tots or hash browns, but will be adding them to the grocery list to make this recipe again. I added more of everything, and have 12 or 13 large servings. With a salad and fruit for desert, It makes a great, easy dinner. Leftovers microwave easily.5 stars

  8. No hamburger, so of course had to use what I had: shredded half a Costco roasted chicken, can of cream of chicken, then followed recipe. I did saute the onions first, though. So good!! How about chopped leftover ham, package of frozen broccoli, cream of broccoli soup, then recipe? Very versatile recipe, and fun!!5 stars

      1. I am allergic to mushrooms so what soup would be the best to use as a substitute?

      2. Although I have only tried the recipe as written, cream of chicken soup can be a good substitute for cream of mushroom. Let me know how it turns out!

      3. I hate mushrooms so I use cream of potato and cheddar cheese soup. My family loves it!

  9. I’m a few years late, but i just got my slow cooker and was looking for recipes. You have delicious ones, you know! But now my question….what are tater tots? I believe we don’t have that in my country. I’m Dutch you know and my english might not be really good, but i don’t have a clue what tater tots are! I appologize for any language mistakes as english isn’t my speaking language. Can you put the answer, if you have one, on the mail for me? Cos i came here through a recipe from fb where i saw your replie to something. It was also about a slowcooker recipe. And i think i’ll never find you back when i close my iPad. I’d love to know the answer. So if you can do that it would be great. Thanks in advance.

      1. Tater tots and hash browns are potatoes. Tater tots are made by shaping finely diced potato into bite-size nuggets. Hash browns can be made from diced or shredded potatoes, usually shaped into a patty.

    1. Any grocery store will usually have tator tots in their frozen section. I understand the language barrier with that. And no if you didn’t go to public schools in America then you probably never even has a tator got as they are on most school menus if not all.5 stars

  10. My family makes T.T.C but not in a slow cooker. We start by taking ground beef and depending on how big your casserole dish is, you want to just cover the bottom of the dish with the hambuger. Then you take a can of Cream of Whatever soup (and once again depending on the size of your dish) and pour it on the hamburger make sure to completely cover . Next you add shredded cheese, we use Colby jack and we layer it on top of the soup. My family loves cheese so we use a lot. And last but not least is the Tater Tots, You line em up or just make them fit and cover the cheese! Bake for 45 min at 350 degrees. Might take a little longer depending on how thick your hamburger layer is. And of course you can add veggies or whatever is your family favs ! Enjoy !
