Holly’s Recipe Highlights for Hoisin Chicken

  • Ingredient Tip: Hoisin sauce is a Chinese sauce made from fermented soybean. It is sweet, salty, and has lots of umami (savory flavor). It’s delicious!
  • Swaps: Use either chicken thighs or thin chicken cutlets in this recipe.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve it over rice with some green beans or steamed veggies.
  • Time-Saving Tip: Serve this chicken with pre-cooked or microwaveable rice packets to save time.
  • Freezing: The chicken and sauce freeze beautifully, so you can always have a quick meal.

Ingredient Tips For Hoisin Chicken

  • Chicken: I love this recipe with chicken thighs as they’re more forgiving and juicy. Boneless skinless chicken breast cutlets will work too, adjust the cooking time as needed.
  • Sauce: Hoisin sauce has a sweet and salty flavor. Rice vinegar, soy sauce, and sesame oil round out the sauce.
  • Variations: Make it spicy with a dash or two of sriracha, red pepper flakes, or ginger. Stir in a bag of peas and carrots, bell peppers, broccoli florets, or sliced zucchini in Step 5 to bulk up the dish.

How to Make Hoisin Chicken

  1. Slice green onions and whisk the sauce ingredients together (full recipe below).
  2. Season chicken and cook in oil. Saute onions with sauce.
  3. Slice chicken into strips and add to the skillet.
  4. Cook until the sauce is thickened.

Storing and Reheating Hoisin Chicken

Keep leftover hoisin chicken in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat portions in the microwave or an air fryer.

Freeze pieces in a zippered bag for up to one month and thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
