Slow Cooker Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes, with peppers, onions & seasoned ground beef in the slow cooker

Ok, I literally could’ve eaten the whole entire pot of this… absolutely delicious!

Let me start by saying, I’ve never been to Philly and I know these aren’t “authentic”.  But I am telling you they are darn DELICIOUS!

I had to make that statement that because people are really passionate about cheesesteak.  I’ve had cheesesteak in the mall (at a place called Philly Cheesesteak) and it had peppers on it.  Arby’s sells a “Philly Beef ‘n Swiss” which I love… it has peppers on it.  Some people say “real” cheesesteak doesn’t have peppers on it, others think it does.. but this recipe definitely has peppers and I hope you love it as much as I do.

We served this on rolls, but I’ve also tossed it with egg noodles in the past because there is a little bit of sauce in the bottom.  Either way, it’s super easy and tastes amazing!  Enjoy!

Slow Cooker Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes (made with ground beef)!

Let me start by saying, I’ve never been to Philly and I know these aren’t “authentic”. But I am telling you they are darn DELICIOUS!


  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 clove garlic
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 large onion or 2 small, slivered
  • 1 large green pepper
  • 1 ½ cups mushrooms thickly sliced (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 can low sodium condensed French Onion soup or beef broth if you can’t find French Onion
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups provolone or mozzarella, shredded (or a combination)

  • Brown ground beef and garlic in a pan. Try not to break the beef up too much, you want to have the pieces a good size. Drain any fat.
  • Place beef, onions, pepper and mushrooms (if using) into a slow cooker. Toss with flour and pepper to taste.
  • Pour soup & Worcestershire sauce over top of mixture and cook on low 4-5 hours.
  • Remove lid, sprinkle with cheese and replace lid for a few minutes until it melts.
  • Serve on rolls or toss with pasta!

  3. Sadly this was to watery for me, and just made the bun turn to mush… Though it was easy to make, and I will defiantly try again. I will just have to alter and play with it a bit.

    1. If yours is too watery you could certainly add a little cornstarch slurry (equal parts water to cornstarch) to thicken it up.

  4. We enjoyed this, however I would put some seasoning on the first time around. I made the leftovers in a casserole, just layered bread and provolone slices. Then I mixed Gouda and seasoning in the meat and put in the mixture in the dish with cheese on top. Baked until melts and then broil for that nice brown cheese on top. Awesome!

  5. Well it looks good and ill probally try it first before deciding what is the best
    but just a few tib bits
    what made them taste good is the flavoring in the beef and it had to be the right kind of beef
    now to mr I live near philly comment you can put green pepers on it well of course cuz if you dont not a philly
    but the green pepper was never the problem a lot of places dont understand you have to have all 3 on it
    mush peppers and onion
    arbees definitely gets 2 thumbs down they wanted to charge me to put mushrooms on it seeing how someone forgot to research it before putting it on there menu
    and of course the chese maybe has nothing to do with the taste and maybe people have diffrent styles
    for me it would be mozerella provalone swiss or munster or all 4
    anyways I always shy away from any food place that doesnt put every ingrediant on it
    oh 1 more thing too you have to put the right amount of product for the price you pay for it to actually enjoy it cuz in philly it maybe on a hoagee but it looks like 5 pounds by just looking at it

  7. Erm. This looks great! (People from Philly don’t be angry) Once when my husband and I were stopped overnight in Philly, we ordered Philly Cheesesteaks (and it may have been my mood…which wasn’t good…because of the lovely surprise of the toll bridge between Delaware and Philly…and I was tired…and crabby)…but I was not impressed. This recipe looks better than what we received, though.

  9. Made this tonight!!! I did chop my green peppers in small pieces, and used Muenster Cheese… It was a hit!!! My Hubby and teenage son loved it!!

  12. Omg! I tried this friday night. I was planning on making it saturday, but i forgot a couple of items to make fridays meal so ended up making this one hour b4 dinner started, not in a crock pot. Fried up onions and peppers together. Just right b4 they are done, added mushrooms and garlic. Fried till mushrooms turned soft. Then remove to plate. Fried up hamburger. Then pretty much followed the recipe but cooked it in skillet. Cooked in 30 minutes? once all ingredients mixed together.Oh my was it good. Im sending this through facebook chat to my friend.   13. I live right outside of Philly and yes you can put peppers on a cheese steak. Real cheesesteak is made with thinly sliced or chipped beef but I like how you turned it into a sloppy Joe ground beef meal for the slow cooker. Sharp provolone cheese or cheese whiz (locals refer to this as cheese wit) would make this a real Philly style meal. You must also eat this standing up and allow the juices to fall on the floor which is another Philly cheesesteak tradition. Can’t wait to try this!
