If you’re tired of expensive lip balms that seem to contain nothing but chemicals, try making your own! Although it may seem like a chore, making lip balm is super simple. In fact, the hardest part may be finding little containers to keep them in!

You’ll need:

  • 2 ounces of Coconut oil or beeswax
  • ¼ teaspoon of vitamin E oil
  • your favorite essential oils (peppermint is wonderful!) or flavor

And that’s it! You can flavor the lip gloss with honey, dried tea leaves, dried flower petals, cocoa butter, or even a few drops of essential oil.

Put a pot of water on medium heat on the stove. Take a smaller pot and fill it with the coconut oil or the beeswax you want in the lipbalm, then set the pot into the water so it is not touching the bottom, and the ingredients aren’t getting wet, but the side of the pot are mostly submerged. Once the oil or wax has melted, mix in your other ingredients. Have a little jar ready, and dump the mixed ingredients into it, then let it harden. And you have yourself a cute little jar of the best, cheapest, lip balm you’ve ever owned!

  1. I like the homemade lip balm recipe… however… clean up afterwards was a night mare ! I melted the beeswax in my glass measuring cup and cleaning it out after was so difficult ! I had to use the hottest water I could stand to melt it while cleaning ! Any tips or advice on how to melt it in some type of throwaway container, maybe in the microwave ?

    1. You could line a pan with foil and place your glass measuring cup upside down. Place in a warm oven for a few minutes to allow the beeswax to melt and drip into the foil.

  2. Your recipe calls for coconut oil OR beeswax. If you want it to get hard, but still go on smooth, you need BOTH ingredients. Use one part beeswax to two parts oil. My recipe uses one part beeswax, 1 part coconut oil, 1 part olive (or sweet almond) oil, a tiny bit of vitamin E oil, and essential oil.
