Combat the Flu with These Foods!

If you’ve read my “about me” you may know I’ve just completed a Biological Science program… and immunology was one of my courses!  It really is pretty unbelievable what our body can do!

This year the flu is hitting us hard!  A great way to help yourself and your family combat this nasty virus is to do all you can to boost your immune system!  I’ve complied a list of foods that you can add to your diet to help boost your immune system!  While none of the foods offer a full defence against the flu, all of them are great immune builders to help keep you healthy…  and all of them are yummy :)!


Chicken Noodle Soup: thins mucous & hydrates

Oats: antioxidant, speeds healing

Onion & Garlic:  antiseptics, Garlic opens clogged sinuses

Mushrooms: Helps produce cells that fight infection by increasing production of immune cells.

Citrus Fruits: vitamin C

Sweet Potato:  Beta Carotene aids growth of the immune system

Almonds:  Antioxidant Vitamin E

Yogurt: has good bacteria to block the replication of viruses  (Make sure it has “live/active cultures” in your yogurt

Hot Tea: thins mucus, hydrates.  Green & Black tea have antioxidants.

Salmon: Vitamin D

Ginger: soothes throat & stomach, directly targets the cold virus.  Natural pain & fever reducer

Honey:  antioxidant & antimicrobial. Fights viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

Black Pepper:  anti-fever and pain-relieving qualities

Spices: garlic, thyme, rosemary, sage and oregano immune system
