Best Fruits for Kabobs

Just like a fruit salad, you can use just about any fruit for skewered fruit on a stick. I try to choose things that don’t brown (like bananas, apples or peaches) and instead opt for fruits that last a bit longer. I also try to think about a variety of colors (or colors based on the occasion) so the fruit kabobs are bright and colorful.

Here are some good choices:

  • Strawberries
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Cantaloupe, honeydew or watermelon balls
  • Seedless grapes
  • Kiwi slices
  • Mango

How to Make Them

This no-cook dish is so simple. Just alternate colors and place the prepped fruit chunks on skewers. Then cover tightly and chill.

  1. Prep the fruit by cutting into slices, wedges or chunks.
  2. Thread fruit onto skewers and refrigerate until eating.

Use wooden or bamboo skewers to make fruit kabobs. You don’t need to soak them. The reason for soaking wooden skewers is to prevent them from burning on the grill.  So there’s no need for that step here.

Make Ahead: Make fruit kabobs ahead of time so they’ll be well chilled before serving. They’ll keep in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours.

Bananas are great on skewers, but they brown quickly. If you plan to use bananas, just chill them with the peel intact. Then peel, cut into chunks and place on skewers just before serving.

Can You Freeze Them?

Fresh fruit turns mushy when you defrost after freezing. This isn’t much of an issue with berries if you intend to make them into blended drinks or smoothies. But so it’s not recommended for fruit kabobs, so plan to make and serve them fresh.

What to Serve with Fruit Kabobs

A variety of creamy dips will make juicy fruit kabobs the star of your table.

  • Whipped topping and shredded coconut – Mix one cup whipped topping with 2 tablespoons of shredded sweetened coconut.
  • Fruit yogurts – Just stir up, place in a bowl and serve next to fruit kabobs (or stir some into whipped topping).
  • Strawberry whipped cream – Whir fresh or frozen strawberries in a blender, then mix with sweetened whipped cream.
  • Chocolate fondue – Melt one cup semi-sweet chocolate chips with 2 tablespoons butter and a cup of heavy cream
  • Vanilla or banana pudding – Follow the instructions on the package.

The next time you’re planning a summer party, don’t forget about fruit kabobs. They’ll bring a smile to everybody’s face.

  1. Thankyou Holly!
    Excellent guidelines.
I used watermelon, pineapple & cantaloupe spears ( bought at Superstore) ready to chop into our desired cubes size, Due to timing constraints to assemble for an outside gathering 20 people expected as ‘ come & go’ or ‘stay awhile’! Basis.
Plus a 2lb tub Strawberries & 1kg green seedless grapes, 2 pints blueberries.
Made 12/14 kababs that includeded strawberries. Plus a 2nd plate of cubed fruits in case some allergic to strawberry. Kids/ adults could ‘ build their own as they liked. skewers, bowls, plates provided..
Scattered blueberries + green grapes on each serving dish as garnish.+ Large serving spoons on each.
Plain Greek yogurt tub + chocolate sauce/syrup bottle for those that wished them. Yum.5 stars

    1. Sounds wonderful Janet! I love the idea of a build your own station in addition to the skewers.

  2. 1 skewer will have 1 c of pineapple, 1 cup of cantaloupe as well as 1 cup of watermelon, along with other fruits? just to clarify.

    1. Sorry for the confusion PF. You will need 12 cubes of each fruit which is approximately 2 cups each. I hope this helps!
